The original vampire myths depicted a corpse rising from the grave by night to stealthily steal blood from unsuspecting sleepers. They'd revisit their victims night after night, and as the attacks went on the victims would start to appear as though they suffered from consumption. The condition would worsen until finally the victim died. During the day the vampires would be dead in their grave, the only possible sign of their nightly activities maybe being blood on their face.
The idea of vampires being suave tempters who can walk and talk with the living was invented in 19th century fiction, and was ultimately popularized by Bram Stoker's Dracula. I'd reckon that if vampires are real, there really aren't any popular works of fiction that depict them accurately. Real vampires are somewhat more like zombies than they are like fictional vampires.
