If there is a whole background like you say then it might be that way.
But on the 'I want to believe' side I come with 3rd world country Virgin shenanigans without much background except 'Whelp, something's up with that statue'.
La Divina Pastora (The Divine Sheperdess) positioned on Barquisimeto, Lara -Venezuela- was actually never meant to arrive to what is now her home. Story goes
>(Current year + 1) - 280 = 1736
>Santa Rosa parson orders Immaculate Conception sculpture
>Divine Sheperdess arrives
>They attempt to send her back immediately
>Can't even lift the box again to take her back
>Conclude that she wants to stay there
Okay, that is easily explained with the fact that sending back such a big and delicate package to another continent and then have another equally delicate one delivered must have been a big chore, especially in the XVIII century. As a matter of fact that is what one of the sources that popped up say, on top of this whole ordeal happening in 1790.
>1812
>Big earthquake
>Big enough to play a decisive role in the war that was waging at the moment
>Destroyed the entirety of the church the statue was located at
>Sheperdess is standing, untouched like it's not her business that an earthquake decimated the place
This was taken by the people as a message of wanting to stay and protect them indefinitely.
Now the big guns:
>1855
>Cholera running rampant
>The people take her on a procession asking for a miracle
>Outbreak comes to an end
Alternative
>Priest asks her to stop the epidemic
>Take him as sacrifice/offering if needed be
>Statue lowers her staff a bit, in affirmative response
>Outbreak ends
>The skies take the Priest while no one is looking
All in all anon you have to know that there is weird in a lot of history, and Catholicism has been diluted to such a degree I doubt we 'get the point' of many things in its particular stories. For further inquiries into Christianity in general, you can attempt to lend an ear to people who just randomly state some biblical stuff and don't attend church that much -most churches, Catholic and Protestant have mellowed out and sometimes they deceive openly ending up more of a support group than a religious gathering-, they will tell you some juicy stuff. For example, one that doesn't roll around enough is the warning that this world is the Devil's and you should distrust everything around you -He who is a friend of the world is an enemy of God-.
This is about all I can provide, I am not even Christian at the moment since I haven't bothered reading my own bible once.
