What's the best and cheapest way to record retro games? Would something like pic related be good enough? If you saw a webm made with it would you be disgusted?

Not sure what the resolution is like on those things, but I doubt it. As long as you're not using a camcorder while suffering from Parkinsons, you should be sweet.

Anything mid-90s up to the HD era will work fine with a capture card like you posted.

When you get into older stuff the quality is still acceptable but you will be unable to capture the true output (usually 240p/i).

The main problem with capture devices like this is that USB devices generally suffer from hella input lag, so you'll have a hard time playing games directly from the captured stream.

Your best bet would be to use composite splitters to send the signal to both the capture device and a TV, capture the video on your PC but actually view the game on your TV.

Composite splitter boxes are piss cheap, but you can also get splitter cables.

That said, forever ago on either /v/ or /vr/ on halfchan some people were talking about some ancient Dell capture device that was supposedly really really nice for retro console capturing. I filed away the model number in the hopes of snagging one cheap someday when I had money (they said that they show up cheap on ebay from time to time).

Model: 00-0507-01

Part #: UW121

I grabbed two images from the thread as well. If you see this device and it's cheap than it might be something to look into.

Shit, I already ordered the one in OP pic. Might be worth taking a look anyway though, and I probably have time to cancel it.

If you end up getting it make sure and do a writeup somewhere on /vr/ for future anons who are interested in low cost capture devices.

I have this one, which is supposedly the legitimate one (it's not) that isn't from China (it is). I guess there's an "official" model for $40-50, but I'd rather just buy something else at that price. If all you want to do is capture video or stream and you don't really give a fuck about quality, it's fine, I haven't had any issues beyond finding the right driver, and that only took a few minutes. It's pretty much exactly what you'd imagine a $20-25 capture device would be. I'll make a webm tomorrow if anyone wants one.

>>4004

Or if you're a real nigga, route the console through a VCR's composite in/out.

>>4006

If it winds up coming and you can't get the drivers to work, try the one on this page (http://www.ezcap.tv/ezcap116-drivers). It might work regardless of model.

>Or if you're a real nigga, route the console through a VCR's composite in/out.

Yeah if you want the output to look like ass. In a pinch it'll work though.

My capture card is an Avermedia Game Broadcaster HD. It'll do component and HDMI, but it's also the only decently priced card that has VGA input, which I use for my Dreamcast.

Only set me back like $109

This was recorded through a VCR, going into my shitass PCI-E crapture card from Avertech. Good enough for me.

No composite or HDMI capabilities, so I'm limited to s-video for now. My SVHS VCR spits out s-video, so whatever I have that's composite or RF only, doesn't require me to dick around with the back of my computer to hook it up. At this low level of signal fidelity, shit doesn't matter.

Here is the same area over component at 480i via Metal Slug Anthology on the PS2 (inb4 not /vr/, I have the PS1 port I promise, I just don't feel like digging it out).

My component splitter isn't working so I had to deal with around 100ms worth of input latency (I normally split the signal and view the game on a direct feed on a screen) and I'm not as good at Metal Slug so please excuse my shitty gameplay.

Purely luck, I assure you. I was giddy with the excitement of having my very own Neo Geo and a pirate cart full of Metal Sluggery, and didn't fuck up like I did when I was emulating the games in the past.

>>4038

>>4039

Looks pretty slick, but then, the PS2 doesn't have the assy video encoder like my later-model Neo Geo.

GSM can't force 240p, 640x480 is the minimum. To get 240p out of most games you have to hex edit them.

It can force 720p and 1080i though, although they both stretch the screen for most games. I was bored so I figured I'd see what 720p (resized to 960x720 for 4:3) footage would look like. Pretty sure we're past the point of diminishing returns though:

OP here, my Easycap just arrived yesterday. Could be worse for only $10. It can only do 30fps, but I've heard people have had good results with deinterlacing. Ignore the wavy lines on the first one, my NES is just fucked up. Notice the black bar at the top that I cropped out in the second WebM. It doesn't fill the whole frame for some reason, but it's not a big deal to crop out.

Whoops, here's the second one. That jumping is the NES' fault, too. Not sure what happened to it, it was fine until now…

That interlacing hurts me on a physical level (it's the reason you have jumping in the first clip and horizontal lines in areas of motion in the second clip), but that's not bad for ten bucks.

An old Avertech PCIE 1X card, out of production. Newer options might be better.
