Grinding within grinding. I'm not fucking kidding.
>dungeons to level your weapons, armor, and items if you are autistic enough
>best gear within certain items
>need to level the item you got from leveling an item you have
>ultra autism mode: reset if the item you are farming within an item you are leveling isn't the right rarity
And that's not even getting into leveling your units which you can enter a dungon within your units to give them permanent stat boosts.
Not to mention the mana farming to reincarnate your units back to level 1 to grind even more.
That said, only get into it if you REALLY like srpgs.

Its a series that celebrates convoluted mechanics and grinding. 5 isn't bad but the story is straight up stale. Do not get the pc version as it has completely removed the online features.
I would recommend 1 over all the others, though. At least it has a charming story with jap voices.

5 Complete is an alright place to start. Disgaea has a tendency to streamline itself more with each release, that includes re-releases too.
This means the best versions of 3 and 4 are on Vita and the best versions of 1,2 and 5 are on PSP, Switch, or PC.
Where you go with the series depends on whether you're looking for a SRPG to play through once or an autism simulator that mills you for about 200 hours per game.

5 has a lot of noob-friendly features and changes but I recommend Disgaea 2 since its smack dab in the middle of what Disgaea was with the first installment and what it eventually became, such as a bunch of no-fun allowed nerfs and changes. Its also on PC with the definitive edition with all the bonus content so you can pirate it for no money down.
And despite what everyone says you can beat the story chapter levels with minimum grinding, just don't reincarnate until you're ready to enter the grind realm and let me tell you there are a lot of ways to grind. Its SRPG grinding for the grinding SRPG fan. Most of the content is based around grinding and going to more extreme levels that you need to have grind-game to beat. The story levels themselves are around 5%-10% of the overall content.

Probably true, but almost all of it is completely optional. The only time you would need to grind outside of the post-game is if you have a fuckhuge squad and the EXP gets spread too thin.

i'd say 1 2 offers easy getting into 3 4 5 are pretty much consider the modern version of disgaea, and offer a different stride of mechanics still all in the sense of grinding item world but lot of extra stuff to do in them.
5 goes for more large scale stuff being made for switch and ps4
3 and 4 were ps3 era and 1 and 2 were ps2 era.
remaster 1 and 2 were for psp now pc
remaster 3 and 4 were vita
remaster 5 aka released on pc and switch

If you plan on playing the entire series, do it in order.
If you just want to play one, play 5.
The PC version is stripped of online functionality, but you can mod it for extra features, custom soundtrack, and adding back some of the content removed because of the online.

They're good fun. Play the series in order because the QoL improvements in each game make it hard to go back to the older ones.
Also, 1 > 3 > 2 > D2 > any and all spinoffs > 4 > 5

>Item World is a randomly generated dungeon that's made just to upgrade your weapons. As the series went on, they added many bizarre things to make it more interesting. Mostly stuff you would see in roguelikes like roaming bosses, mystery rooms, and shops.

Love the series but my main gripe with them is that the main cast and plots past the first game are very weak. The first game has the strongest cast and all the ones after fail to capture the charm. Also (((NISA))) ruins everything, so pirate whenever you can.

Personally I don't like the gameplay as much as Final Fantasy Tactics (Advance), but the first game is fun. I haven't enjoyed any of the other ones though.
