ea7447 No.16742125
Despite news earlier in the month week that Gamestop had hired to design firm R/GA to revamp their business and give "stores a unique layout and purpose that appeal to gamers", the company has struggled to convince shareholders that the retailer has any value left.
Currently Gamestop stock is sitting at $3.90; an all-time low for the company and a whopping 91% lower than what the company was trading at in the summer of 2015. In real numbers that's $3.4 BILLION in market capital gone to the wind.
The death of Gamestop was always seen as inevitable but general consensus was the company would at least survive into the next generation. Looking at the latest figures, it seems that company wont even last long enough to see the much needed shot in the arm that new hardware releases bring.

Gamestop succeeded in the past when corporations were working with them. Nowadays, the PC market has almost completely removed physical media, Microsoft literally made a discless Xbox (and will continue pursuing that), and Sony and Google want to work on streaming. Even Nintendo is making some push for digital sales, usually through deals like the online voucher, or double "coins" (money back) for some digital releases.
Games companies are now working against physical media, since they get more money back. If gamestop wants to make money, they have to look to the few consumers still buying physical, who aren't buying things off Amazon.
The issue is physical stores, they can't compete, they will bleed to death, it's only a question of how long it takes.

It's won't be another company moving in, it will be the death of physical game sales. That's a large part of why they are dying, as well as people ordering games online from amazon.
Of course, logically speaking, ordering physical games online will die out eventually in favor of digital only on everything.
Anyone championing Gamestops death should keep in mind that it is linked to the death of physical games as well.

I predicted this 3 years ago, saying they would be bankrupt in 5 years. They fucked up by changing their old rewards card system and limiting the more favorable trade in values to current and just released titles, titles that were obviously shit and took 8 to 20 hours to beat and be bored with. They could have easily survived by giving 40% value to older RPGS and enticing collectors to shed their collections for new consoles and games, but they got greedy and stupid in the worst time to get greedy and stupid– during a new game drought.
Good riddance, I am glad I crop dusted their stores every chance I got.

Instead of actually trying to compete and delivering DRM free physical on PC as well as some free trinkets and bonus stuff on all physical copies with all the money they had from literally buying out nearly every single retail store, paying their employees like shit and nickel and diming their customers, they kept shafting the consumer and their own employees
They made their own bed, I cackled when they pretended like the Switch physical sales were going to fucking save them.

On the one hand, fuck Gamestop and all the shit they've pulled over the years. On the other, I'd rather them going under not impact future physical availability in a market that's increasingly looking to cut production corners. While Walmart, Target, and Best Buy are admittedly still around, the latter two have pathetic vidya selections and Walmart has a tendency to keep games at nearly full price for years after release.
>>16742164
On rare occasion, they can have something worthwhile I can't find at any other local options and/or are more expensive online, or the occasional exclusive like Xenoblade was for the Wii. But those cases are few and far between, and they're still a last resort.
>>16743179
Yeah. And I remember when Gamestop bought them out and suddenly there was a Gamestop inside the mall and one across the street. Ten fucking Gamestops in a five mile radius at one point.
>>16742815
They pretty much want to be "Geekstop" these days, considering how much space is devoted to merchandise. In comparison, while the independent game stores around these parts might also have some funko, it's much, much less, and they're still very much game focused. Prices and availability can be a crapshoot though.
>>16742442
They tried pushing it pretty hard on the consumer too. I remember those fucking radio ads back when I was rooting around them for particular DS games half a decade back. Claiming that the chain had all the mobile accessories any "real gamer" needed and such. They even trashed their DS cases and manuals to make shelf space for them, and the employees had the gall to act like you should be grateful they even still had them cart only.
>>16742971
Probably. One local chain where I am does quite well stocking for every generation, but predominantly older. However, the trade off (for better or worse; probably better) is that they can't really get new releases in unless an employee picks some up as preorders from other places like Amazon or Walmart (not Gamestop though), as distribution companies are loathe to want to waste the time sending small fry anything.

I'm pretty worried about the future, at least there's at least some groups of people who are still interested in physical copies who are taking advantage of the middle market companies like TheIndieBox, LRG and EastAsiaSoft/Play-Asia.
Right now its just hoping that Japan and asian countries don't fall for the same plague that is digital gaming; at the very least it will take more time and effort there to be ruined like things were here.

Game bought out its competent competition and stopped selling any PC games outside of WoW and endless Sims packs since they didn't have to compete and console games seemed more profitable at the time. This drove their entire PC market to (((Steam))) and has left them with a declining share of the few normalfags who still buy physical vidya sports basically as even the half-normalfags have mostly moved away from consoles. The shops are now a good 50% non-game shit like funko pops.

>Nowadays, the PC market has almost completely removed physical media
Again speaking only from a bong perspective but digital PC sales wouldn't have taken off if the physical shops hadn't abandoned the market first: steam was wildly unpopular when it was first announced but once physical purchasing was basically dead for PC anyway people moved over. It used to be the case you could walk in and there'd be giant buckets in the centre of the shop of cheap second hand vidya with a ton of PC games but that space was gradually replaced with consoleshit. If they'd kept up the obvious visual reminder of the benefits of physical sales i.e. second hand market people would have continued supporting them.
I miss Gamestation which were the only real rival to Game and had a much bigger emphasis on better prices on older games and on second hand. Fucking Blockbuster selling them to Game is what ruined the physical market in this country. No points for guessing what year that happened in.

Gamestop and GAME bought all the competition, consoles were getting extremely popular, all the normalfags flooded in and accepted shit like pre order bonuses, and later on, DLC, so consoleshit and non game shit took the shelves and PC games got shafted.
Yet you still had some independent or other retailers which had a PC space, with plenty of older games as well, which were usually older stock.
Yet at the same time you had Microshaft forcing GFWL down peoples throats.
The Orange Box released around the same time, showed people a service like that could actually work so everybody flocked to Steam.
It didn't have shit to do with DRM and everything about retailers essentially abandoning the PC space.

Why do normalfags think this is a thing? Have you ever actually been to a "close out sale" for anything larger than a local business? It all gets bundled up into lots and bid on by online retailers like Amazon. Unless you roll up to the auction with thousands of dollars to spend on a lot of Nintendo Wiis, you aren't getting anything.

Because their job literally depends on it. I had to threaten to walk out last time I went to GameStop because the guy fucking argued with me about the philosophical merits of pre-ordering and whether or not it's similar to gambling. Most unbelievable customer service I've ever seen. I was buying a PS4 for Bloodborne, it was a mistake in hindsight. They have to make the "circle of life" (bullshit sales speak for selling someone on everything) at least once every two weeks or they get fired. All of the district and regional managers are petty assholes that constantly troll around stores managed by new managers they don't like and tell them that they aren't up to standard, that they should just resign, even if they're doing well. This is all hearsay from former employees but I believe it, given that it explains so much of the behavior I've seen.

Somewhat relatedly I've no real pain to feel since this will likely also mean the death of EB Games as they're a subsidiary, and while their smaller ones (think maybe a bit over living-room-sized) typically focus on games, the ones occupying what might as well be a typical house block? One of my roommates used to work at GameStop in 2004-2005. He was a colossal douchbag and the entire circle of friends grew to hate him. He was promoted to assistant manager extremely quickly due to his top-tier salesman skills. He was a slimy, manipulative bastard that conducted himself like a reality-TV drama character. That fucker would tell stories about how he'd toy with customers and get them to pre-order.
For those that appeared somewhat less-intelligent, he would flat out lie to them and say "Sorry, we don't have any GameX in stock anymore. You should have pre-ordered." and go through all the games they were looking forward to for the entire year. He'd convince them to preorder each one there on the stop, including ones they were on the fence about.
For those that weren't retarded, he would pause transactions and casually say, "So what games are you looking forward to?" This was the beginning of a flowchart he perfected. Depending on what you said, the conversation would purposely take as long as possible until you pre-ordered, became belligerent, or proved to him that you were worthy of having your transaction finished. This would require you mentioning a niche game that he was also one of his favorites.
In the past 4 years or so, whenever a GameStop thread comes up, a bunch of you respond how you never have any troubles going there. How the staff doesn't try to bait you into preordering or hassle you about whatever magazines they're hawking. Gamestop greentext stories also seem to have become obscure. Wondering if this is because of a general push to be less ballbusting by corporate or just so little people are going there anymore. Prolly a combination of the two judging from the stock price. Some of these shitty numale youtubers are even showing nostalgia for GameStop like it was ToysRUs in the late 80's early 90's. Seriously, don't do that. If you were shopping at GameStop during the 00's, fuck that franchise.
One last thing about that shitty roommate. Learned something amazing through him. My strategy of getting through the pre-order hustle: give a well-executed joke. When asked, "So what games are you looking forward to?", I would respond, "None really." Guy behind the counter, going through the flowchart would respond, "None? Not even [upcoming game]?" To which I'd go,
>Naaaah. [Game I"m buying] is going to hold me to prolly next year. I spend most of my time in Second Life convincing middle-aged central and south american women to participate in furry gangbangs. It sounds kinda weird, but the most fucked up thing is I'm not even a furry. I just like seeing them slowly spiral into madness and eventually end their night with low-poly red rockets being slapped all over their slut faces.
That usually gets you a free pass. Fucking gamestop.

Maybe it just depends on the cashier, that's never happened to me, though to be fair I haven't been there in years.
Though if the faggot behind the counter started talking to me about games I would just brush him off. I'm there to buy something, not have a conversation with someone I don't even know.

I never mind doing small-talk with the employees as long as the store isn't busy and I'm not in a rush. Not to derail the thread, but finding offline friends is a nightmare unless you're into some hobby that gets you out of the apartment. Hell, even finding quality online friends is difficult if you're not playing the flavor of the month/year game.
Contrary to the flowchart, if they don't hassle me about preorders and seem like a legit nerd, I would even specifically ask them if they need some pre-orders to boost their numbers. I used to preorder 5 games, then when picking up the one I wanted, have them move all the money to the current game.

GameStop Lays Off Dozens Of Regional Managers As It Searches For A Future
http://archive.fo/RRHns
>On Tuesday, several GameStop employees took to Reddit to report that their regional sales supervisors had been laid off. These anecdotal reports, combined with tips to Kotaku about some layoffs, have since been bolstered by an email from GameStop management, whose authenticity Kotaku has confirmed, that surfaced stating more than 50 people had been let go across the company’s regional sales teams.
>“As part of our continued GameStop Reboot transformation initiative, a dedicated team, including the Retail Vice Presidents, HR, LP. and the U.S. Store Operations leadership team, have been working diligently to realign our current field regions and districts in an effort to reduce our cost structure and build efficiencies into our field leadership organization so that we can reinvest in the business,” reads an email sent to employees at affected stores on behalf of Gary Riding, the company’s senior VP of US stores.
>“Unfortunately, with these changes, there are more than 50 field leaders who have been impacted and will be leaving the GameStop team,” it continues. “This includes regional, district, HR [Human Resources, and LP [Loss Prevention] leaders. These decisions are not easy, but necessary to help us reduce costs to enable investment in revenue-driving initiatives that will help grow the business once again.”
>One of the affected employees, who spoke to Kotaku on the condition of anonymity, confirmed the email was real. “It was wide spread. 50-plus DLs [District Leaders], 6 RLs [Regional Leaders], multiple Hr [Human Resources] and Lp [Loss Prevention] staff,” the person said in an email. The individual believed that most of the people targeted in the layoffs were high paid District Leaders, responsible for coordinating several individual stores, as well as under performers.
>“Most districts and region are massive now,” the now former employee said. “Dls have 20 plus stores and quality of living I would assume is going to go down.” Prior to the restructuring, they said district leaders oversaw 15 stores or fewer on average. Earlier this year, GameStop reportedly laid off a dozen employees in charge of marketing and website maintenance for ThinkGeek, the toy brand acquired by GameStop in 2015 for $140 million.
>The “revenue-driving initiatives” mentioned in the email could be a reference to company plans to pivot to esports. In July, GameStop announced it had partnered with a design firm to drastically change how some of its stores operated including making some that would cater to “home-grown e-Leagues” and others that would be entirely focused on retro games.
>In June the company’s share price dropped by 30 percent down to $5.04, its lowest point in over a decade, following an announcement that it would get rid of its quarterly dividend to shareholders in order to save $157 million a year. Nearly two months later its share price sits at $4.02.
>At least some part of GameStop’s recent financial troubles, which prevented the company from being able to find a potential buyer earlier this year, likely stem from the shift away from physical games this console cycle. In an June 4 earnings call, CEO George Sherman reported that used game sales had dropped 20.3 percent. And earlier this week, Sony announced in its earnings call that for the first time ever that digital game sales had surpassed 50 percent of all games purchased for the PS4 during the previous quarter.
>This week’s layoffs come just ahead of the company’s annual GME business conference for store leaders set to take place at the end of the month in Nashville, Tennessee.
>GameStop did not respond to a request for comment.
