What? Anon, Doom and Mortal Kombat came out at about the same time, and Doom is without even a shadow of a doubt much gorier. Sure you can rip characters heads off and turn them into skeletons in MK, but they're usually just parts of the sprite cut off with blood coming out. Doom not only has gory deaths where monsters are blown apart, but you can see in great detail which of their body parts come out, where they land, and get up close and examine the sprite at your leisure since there's no round time limit. There's also map props and textures which depict, again in great detail for the time, people who were obviously brutally tortured to death, severed torsos impaled on spikes and chained to walls. Later on there's even more abstract kinds of hell like screaming faces trapped in walls.

nuDoom at least is fun, when you approach it with current year glasses (that is, heavily lowered standards). Before I first played it I already knew I shouldn't approach it expecting a Doom sequel, but just a modern sci-fi action fps that happens to share the same name - same deal with nuPrey. With that perspective, it was probably the best (or less shitty) action fps released in 5 years.

Believe me, I tried extremely hard to enjoy nuDoom, mostly because I wanted anything resembling an FPS made pre-2010, but I couldn't. Every time I explored the edges of the map, I found a bobble head and was disappointed, except for that one time in level 2 where you can get the plasma rifle (which isn't really much of a secret anyway, I literally found it by accident in the normal course of my exploration). Every time I saw one of those little retro sections, I thought "They couldn't have put the whole level in because it would have made them look bad." Those things don't even contain any significant pickups, it's just "look guys, we slapped low res textures on a modern engine." Yay? Every time I walked into a room and saw one of those demon hearts or whatever, I thought "Oh boy, here we go." There was no tension at all, I never once was afraid while walking around the hallways because the game never throws significant encounters at you outside of arenas. And I was playing on hard mode, which should be the UV equivalent or "the way the game was intended to be played." I got bored by the time they started littering levels with those little challenge runes.

The music was another thing for me. I didn't enjoy the noise aspects and never understood why there were so many that seem to enjoy it. So on the topic of id Software and their "fall from grace," they had that a long fucking time ago. Quake II was alienating to fans of the first game, but then they came out with Quake III which didn't even have a story/plot to it, it was just deathmatch. Then 2004 came and went and all but diehard id fans were pretty much writing off id because they'd seemingly lost a step and couldn't make games like what made their company in the first place. And Quake 4 just cemented that opinion, no one wants to even talk about it. Rage launched with lackluster mechanics and game breaking bugs caused by driver issues.

And then John Carmack left the company, meaning that no one who made the company or its IPs was even part of the company anymore. Carmack was never a design guy to begin with, though his contribution to the early games is undeniable. Without Tom Hall and John Romero the company was already pretty well diminished, but throw in the loss of McGee and Sandy and there just was nothing going for id anymore other than fancy game tech. Which they couldn't even keep up with, and id Software engines stopped being the bleeding edge of pertinent technology. Megatexture was a fucking waste of time in the end, because let's be honest, nobody cares that every pixel of your fucking map is unique when they're driving 200 mph.

I watched Icarus' review of it, and I know he's not the most hardcore Doom player but he showed ample footage and his concerns seem pretty valid, aside from a couple about Barons that might be because he mismanaged ammo. Not an excuse. The commercial levels are frankly very overrated. Aside from Romero's levels, who was at the top of his game at the time and not shaking off 25 years of rust, they were extremely hit and miss, with Doom 2 doing things like including scrapped levels from their tech demo version of the original Doom. I could enjoy them when I was a kid but the truth is when you play Doom at least once a year or so the flaws in the map design start to become very apparent and it would be a little silly to not incorporate some of the lessons learned by the community in the intervening two and a half decades.

Icarus seemed to do a good job reviewing this wad, unless he was deliberately hiding a lot of savescumming. He said he played through each level multiple times to be sure he could figure out a decent route through each one and he also didn't go for 100% kills by any measure, stating several times in the video that it would have made the game much harder.

Now on the thread topic, I think that the RPG element in the Wolfenstein games is what kill the games for me. I liked the old times when you only see cutscenes after a mission as a reward. No interaction with NPCs, just go to X zone and deal with it.

Plenty of foreign powers cared during our Revolutionary War. The British ran blockade runners to the CSA during the Civil War as well. We have fuckloads of natural resources and arable land, that's why so many nations fought for colonies here.

only if they antagonize them in the first place, and after a war which drained the countries resources and manpower it would be a quite different scenario to take over (ofc under the assumption they would have the manpower and intention). coming into the country and massacring half the population will ofc trigger an equal reaction - oppression on a personal level after you keep the status quo up for a time is much easier and needs much less people. in wolfenstein they nuked new york and washington, not only would that mean no more central government to plan and do shit, it would also be a moral blow (considering how much 9/11 triggered triggered some people) which can not be underestimated. and that was a single incident, not a surrender with people attacking US soil which never happened before.

you wouldn't even really need to oppress much depending how you go about it if you control the people in charge and your population falls for it. keep a small occupation force which is "only in place to handle the surrender", which controls the new government, which is usually in a big city and cities being more liberal, much easier. and the US put asians in camps because pearl harbor and had a red scare, they fall for propaganda and mass hysteria just like every one else. so american citizens might have different values which makes it more difficult to ((subvert)), but also means those values can be exploited, and the nazis were damn good at propaganda.

in case of those hicks you can just pay someone with a beef, so all you'd really need is a guy with a case full of money on a daytrip. I know it was just an overblown example, but it's never black or white and you'll inevitably have already "homegrown" sympathizers and opportunists everywhere. so you don't send hans und franz to hickville to deal with them, you send them to the major or just someone else up the food chain to deal with it either voluntary or not.

dunno either, but if germany is the only one with nukes (and a big technological advantage) starting shit is futile if not outright suicide - and it's not like those countries were friends before so they might be even less inclined to intervene, and not until those countries at least catched up, which will take quite some time, if they can even act independently anymore.

You've made good points. I think my problem with this scenario is that it banks heavily on the competence of Nazis and their leadership which is paradoxical in nuWolf. The results of their strategy which are visible in the games show that they are extremely competent, but many of their actions and plans are idiotic on paper. Either that or the Allies and resistance forces are quite incompetent.

If the USSR exists and China falls in line out of fear of now-global-superpower Nazi Germany, I could see that making an interesting story thread to create a new game from, but it seems like they haven't decided to touch on it yet. Hopefully it won't be another 4 hour game that glorifies the annihilation of your farmer class because muh Communism
