Yes, I know there's already a Falcom thread but that's for an entire company. This thread is just for Ys specifically. Besides, all they ever talk about in those threads is news and new releases. No one ever wants to talk about anything before the last five or so years.

The Ark/Oath/Origin games were the fucking best, awesome games i can replay any time. 1 and 2 came off as being cool for their time but by now obviously outdated XSeed were meme loving faggots in the translations. Gonna start on Memories of Celceta soon but i've mostly heard people don't like it nearly as much. Is there a decent version of Ys 5 in english? I've been trying to play em in numbered order.

>Bump Combat

Ys 4 Dawn of Ys, it's so well done it's a shame it's practically the last one of the bump combat games unless you count Chronicles as newer games.

>Input Combat

Origins. Felghana is neat but Origins is in my opinion better.

>Boss

It's a tie between Fleghana's Chester 3, Origin's Hugo Fact, The Unbound, Seven's Scias, Origin's Kishgal The Peerless or Felghana's final boss

>Soundtrack

Rul Ende's theme. The way it blends so much of the game's previous tracks into one is very good.

>Character

The Claw. Adol's great and all but he controls like a dream.

In my opinion MoC is the worst of the worst.

>Start of when Adol no longer wears a shield

>Reuses the same dungeon tracks over and over again

>Introduces the relic system except you rarely use a relic past its introduction in a dungeon and it's never interesting

>Every enemy and boss is a damage sponge and also hits like a truck

>party AI is retarded and is also the start of when your party is stuck at 1 hp if you don't have them on evasive mode

>music altogether isn't particularly good, Ancient Land is probably the only good track in the entire thing

>Lets you use a spearman but his moveset is complete ass

>in fact everyone except the brawler's moveset is complete ass

Speaking of ass, Karna and Frieda are some nice eyecandy

>Has the most retarded fast travel system ever conceived, I'm convinced it wastes more time than saves actually

If Seven doesn't impress you then MoC will put you off alltogether. LoD is slightly better than either but not much and the best part of the game I believe was added as extra content in the PC/PS4(next gen) version.

You mean when the franchise tried to completely change the gameplay, failed twice and almost killed the IP? Fuck that shit, Ys became really good when it was revived with Ys VI. The games and the lore is ages better than TDoY's fanfiction tier story. Same goes for the gameplay. As much as I like TDoY, Ys was much worse in ye old days, because it was making mistakes similar to those from the Sonic franchise.

Nigga, some of us have been touching Falcom games long before Shitseed and (((Tom))) ever decided to spend money on for memelations. The games utilizing the Oath engine are great, though Ark can only be played on PC since the PS2 and PSP ports were handled by Konami who fucked up everything, Ys Chronicles is very good even if I dislike the bump system. Out of them Oath's probably my favourite since Origins has tighter controls but the boss and dungeons and music for that matter never reach Felghana. It's tied with Ys7 for my favourites. But like I said, the highest skill on something like Lacrimosa has the later bosses and enemies feel too powerful to even bother with or be fun.

Add to that the incredibly aggravating Flash Guard/Move gimmick that should die in a fire and the combat ceases to be fun by the time you hit the 12 hour mark.

f50fb7  No.16741333

>>16741310

The problem isn't solely in the fact that the bosses die too fast or too slow(although it's a big part).

Take Oath in Felghana's first three bosses.

>Boss 1: Dularn 1. Boss teleports all around the map. SHe has multiple projectile patterns that require your entire moveset and some decent timing and reflexes.

>Boss 2: Tittymonster. Boss requires you to time jumps or sidestrafes while also firing at the boss. The boss then uses a tornado to increase the difficulty of your movement and then continues chucking saws at you.

>Boss 3: Chester 1. It's a very intense rival fight where just jumping around or keeping your distance means you'll get fucked sooner or later. Chester attacks very quickly, has a lot of attack patterns from a sword string to a powerful dash, to throwing knives to a parry.

And then look at the final boss of Felghana which takes on every single skill you've learned and puts it through the gauntlet. Three phases of a boss that requires platforming, timing, lots of dodging and shit.

Now compare Ys 8's first three bosses(excluding the kraken at the intro because it's the first introduction to combat)

>Boss 1: The bat/bear hybrid. He only has melee attacks. He swipes at you, belly flops you or roars which knocks you on the ground. His attacks are very telegraphed and very slow, and he never strings attacks. All of his attacks can be avoided by staying a large enough distance.

>Boss 2: I honestly forget, I think it's the t-rex you fight when you first meet Sahad. He swipes his tail, or rams you. I think he has a fireball attack and that roar that knocks you on the ground. Both of his attacks can be dodged by staying a sizable distance from, he never strings attacks.

>Boss 3: I geniuenly forgot so let's jump ahead in the game and take the serial killer boss fight, which I believe is the only boss fight that is a humanoid enemy. He has lots of attack patterns, but they're all mostly close range. His attacks might be telegraphed, but I honestly couldn't tell because fighting a human with three humans in your party, all packing very flashy and loud skills makes for some shit visual queues.

The point I'm trying to get across in these games is that you either waste a lot of time keeping your distance until the attack is done, or you just flash guard through anything because it's identical to the guard in felghana, except it barely requires timing, isn't bound by a resource and can block indefinitely as long as there is an attack. Not to say Ys 7 or Dana are all bad bosses, 7 has some good bosses(I really like Scias since it doesn't suffer from the same issues as Dana's serial killer), Dana has one particularly great boss(the secret boss in Dana's era that moves and attacks at Celceta's pace, requires actively switching between Dana's forms and has attacks that cannot be reliably flash guarded/dodged).

abe028  No.16742955

>>16741333 (CHECK'd)

I see what you mean. Yeah, with Oath you basically are tested with the different abilities you get as you progress, something Zelda copied, while Lacrimose ups the quantity of bosses but they are braindead for the most part. I think part of that is partly due to the devs not knowing what the fuck to do anymore with bosses because every game now they have to create completely new shit for everyone instead of relying on a more steady formula of Adol having 3 magic attacks, his basic attacks that may or may not change depending on the sword / special bullshit, very fast movement and him being the only character. I've noticed that ever since Celceta they've been trying to make some characters slower to run(which is bullshit since in 7 it was tied to speed and you could make everyone be a bullet train like that little fucker, Elk) and without double jumps the player can't get tests on the verticality of the attacks.

I think the inexperience of the new staff is also a factor here, along with the preferences of the new audience for Ys. Watch any of the so called new Ys fans try to beat Oath or Origins and they are fucking stamped. The sidequests, multiple characters who are the focus of the game and their abilities are what they like, rather than the fast paced action with thoughtful bosses, so they follow the money. We may have to accept that maybe, like with Tokyo Xanadu, Falcom will now cater to the fans the same way Kingdom Hearts does : with the additions from the EX / + / enhanced editions released later down the line. It also has to do with the sensibilities of the time :

>80s-00s

>Basically Lodoss and such kinds of action fantasy were popular and even Tales emulated it

>Mid00s-10s

>Isekai fantasy and "videogame" fantasy is popular so the gameplay reflects absurds powers, braindead foder enemies and bullshit one-of hits that resemble stiff animation

It's why I'm hoping Ys9 will stop that bullshit and be normal again.

I haven't played Chronicles since long before 8 came out so I'm sure I didn't get the reference. I have heard that even the manuals of first games released in the 80s foreshadowed later games, but all I've seen is references to locations that you don't visit until later games. Because of that a lot of people try to say that Falcom had the whole story and lore planned out from the beginning. Personally I think they just put vague references to far away places to make the world seem more fleshed out and then made everything else up as they went along. If they had everything planned out from the beginning they wouldn't have had to rewrite the first four games so that the story makes sense.

Given that YsI&II did the whole "Due Adol finding Ys, he went on many adventures on XYZ places and started the Age of Discovery, went missing at 63 years old, nobody knows what happened" and the vague locations were actually cliff notes for the devs to base some real world locations to build their fictional world for Adol to adventure in. Lorefags just take this simple premise and stretch it like motherfucking Luffy, until it fits their retarded narrative because of Soulstubers instilling that kind of thinking to them. It's basically retards feeding retards and their sperge spills outside of their bounds, ruining everyone's fun as always.

And as always people forget that the guys who made Ys I and II later quit to make Quintet and the new, inexperienced guys made the later entries we love.

And the two Act Raiser games on SNES were theirs too.

It's not just this series, it's almost every series. Have you fucking seen the retardation going on with Pokemon after BW or worse, Kirby? That shit's nuts. If Gayme Theory didn't already made them retarded enough to believe their fanfiction shit and spout them as law to everyone's faces, Soulstubers put that final nail in the coffin. People play games for the lore now than the gameplay, which is you often see tumblr or worse, plebbit congragating to some very certain releases. The game could have the most straightforward story ever like Nioh, yet thos niggers will play the game as a Souls-like and look for ultra-hidden lore and when they see that's not what the game is about, they give it a lesser score and say "it's not as god as Soulsborne as XYZ games".

Death is the only cure for that kind of retardation.

>>16744083

The first one is highly recommended as is the Episode of GameCenter CX with Chief Arino, trying to be good at the game. Loads of comfy fun. It's kind of amazing how Xanadu went through Tokyo Xanadu, the most obvious Persona rip-off and came out pretty well considering. Something that pisses me off with the newer Falcom games after the switch to the CS1 graphics is that everyone looks exactly like. Say what you will about the garden gnomes of Sky/Ys 6, Adol looked distinct from Dogi who looked distinct from like the king to the cat girls to anything else. Adol wasn't the same face and model to like Rean Coldsteele and the "muscular" models wasn't just a flat texture of abs. Estelle's ass is nice but she still seems to have the face of everyone else in CS.

Blame the new artists, they are the generic RPG / LightNovel artstyle fuckers who are cheap for work or worse, fujoshi artists who work on trading card games like the new artist for Fire Emblem 3 Houses. Rare good artists like Hidari and Enami are now very expensive comparatively. This kind of artstyle is also easy on the eyes of normalfags, who instantly go "Oh, it's anime but not too anime for my tastes" while scarfing down Yaoi and Bara of JoJo in their tumblrs or whatever.

Sure almost-Fuhrer but the full pic comes from is pic related, a great moment in the game and a nice visual reference to Spartacus. But like all faggots and shippers do, they latch on that shit and make everything about them and how cockhungry they are. A similar situation arose back with MGS and 2, when you had half-naked Snake getting tortured(or was he in the cell and you had to do the ketchup trick, can't remember) and fags were beating off to that instead of playing the game. Or recently, when Tumblr discovered the Yakuza games and "Daddy Kiryu" getting naked every three seconds and battling other half naked dudes so they now have Uncle Kaz shipped with everyone and they even dared to tumblrize them to be "cute". You know, with the red noses and that gay shit. Same thing with "Hot Ryu" aka bearded Ryu from SFV.

Same story different gameplay. Ys3 originally is a side scroller somewhat similar to Zelda 2, although it's kind of unrefined with a lot of bosses being damage rushes and I vaguely remember power/defense rings breaking the game in half. The PCEngine music is pretty good though. Felghana is the same story but with the Ark of Nephatism gameplay, larger areas, more bosses, some additional story beats, a weapon upgrade system(which is kind of a lazy way to stretch the weapon/armor tier system as opposed to the one in Ark). The only thing the original 3 has over Felghana is the music, I'm honestly not a fan of most of the remastered stuff.

Soul Blazer is pretty rough, but as the first game in the series it's to be expected that it's not as refined. I wouldn't say it's essential to complete, but it's there if you want it. Move on if you're not really feeling it, because Illusion of Time is great fun, and not nearly as tedious (although it does have the "kill all enemies in the dungeon to proceed" requirement).

The story is pretty good too, with the MC searching for his father who went looking for the Tower of Babel, and has to travel a pre-history Earth (complete with ancient and forgotten civilisations) to get there, visiting real life (and mythical) civilisations.

Terranigma is A++ though. I'd recommend saving that for last, simply because everything else will seem worse afterwards.
