There was an old 80s game called Archon that was essentially chess except whenever you'd land on an enemy's space you'd goto an arena room and you'd physically fight using a different engine. Pawns were weak and certain pieces could cast spells outside of the arena. Also certain spaces gave you health or power boosts if you were on them.
They remade it recently as Archon Classic but I haven't gotten around to trying it. I was searching for similar games in the same genre but it appears like this is entirely unique to the Archon series.
Websites that suggest similar games suggest stuff like BloodBowl and SRPGs. Do any anons know of the name for the Archon genre? or where to find similar modern versions?
I feel like its a niche that no one is tapping into. I really enjoy strategy games and SRPGs but I always felt as if the forced combat was a bit cheap. Your strategy should only improve your chances of winning a fight, not guarantee them.
Imagine FFtactics or even Advanced Wars except when units attacked you played some minigame 1 v 1 battle fighter to determine the actual outcome. There should always be a chance for an underdog to defy all odds.
Then add an element like in Civ where the longer a unit survives the more it becomes a veteran and earns more resources like power or weapons etc etc.
There's a lot of people who like slow strategy AND twitch competitive gameplay. So any help anons?
Do we just call this the Archon Genre?

It's an interesting topic OP, but seeing as there's only two games with a very limited following I don't think that genre is the right word just yet. The concept needs to flourish and be explored before then, and based on what you've given it sounds worthwhile to at least try.

Interesting to see someone else interested in this idea. I was asking around the fighting game thread because I was looking for games similar to Shaman King: Power of Spirit which merges fighting game combat with turn based tactical board movement. Although the game also has the option to play out combat purely through the stats of your characters, you can always opt to fight your opponent(s) in a soul calibur-esque engine.

Oh yeah, and I should add, despite hating that it's true, that this sort of autism is what makes ASSFAGGOTS popular. It's too bad there wasn't some Wakfu-style MMO with Archon combat during the heyday of 'hey lets try this thing but massively multiplayer'.

these look like the closest "clones". The Archon battle gameplay was setup in the same vein as another great classic called Gain Ground. Top Down shooter with special moves and unique characters.
I don't want to waste another thread, and you all look like you might know whats up. Do we have any spiritual successors to Gain Ground beyond that PS2 remake?
In the meantime me and my friends go back and forth between smash bros and MTG. to get that slow strat and fast twitch fight.

>Do any anons know of the name for the Archon genre? or where to find similar modern versions?
Getting back to this, it's not so much a genre but you're looking for strategy games that substitute a deterministic combat system with some form of real time combat?
Yggdra Union: You Shall not Fight Alone also has a momentum based combat system where you chose how hard your soldiers fight and have to balance being defensive with going all out as your ability to attack at full force is tied to a meter that drains on attack, and charges on defense. There is also an element of deck building where you use cards to determine how many moves you can make in a turn, and confer abilities and effects to units for the duration.
You can also stack the number of units that attack in a single encounter by linking them together based on whether the unit is male or female. Meaning you can have 1 enemy unit fight several successive battles, or you can fight an enemy chain with your own. PSP version is worth looking into although it recently got a mobile port I haven't looked at.

>This Genre Needs a Name
This is not a genre, it's a game.
It's genre is Strategy. You can narrow down to Turn based Strategy, if you want. You can narrow it down further by saying it's a Turn based Strategy but with Real time combat. You can narrow it down even more by saying it's a Strategy game that plays like a Archon.
But there is no need to make an entire new genre just because this Strategy game has some quirks to it. Otherwise every single game would be it's own genre.
IF, it starts getting attention and many moregames like it, it may spawn a subgenre, like the "Tactics" that people are refferring to, that is nothing more than Turn based Strategy with RPG elements, just for convenience. But as it is, if you want a game that plays like it it's better to look for "a game that plays like Archon" than a "game in Archon's genre".

I remember playing a demo of a game similar to this on the original xbox. You had a grassy plain that was the board, units moved across its tiles. When they reached an enemy unit, a real time battle event would take place, which involved fighting the unit on a new level that represented the two tiles they were on. I remember it had a bunch of fantasy units in it, even some kind of elemental giant (made of molten rock). I can not recall the name of it but it sounds very similar to Archon.

The NES godzilla is kind of like this, also I remember Chess Kombat from one of the 3D mortal kombat games had this, it's like chess but your pieces would go into the fighting engine when attempting to take another piece and how much health you have remaining after each fight determines how much health your piece has for the next fight.

The game still allows for it, but there's no multiplayer and the battles are always asymmetrical so the idea of pawns and rooks is obscured, but you're fighting things that are either much stronger or weaker than you most of the time, so I'd say it's probably the closest thing to what OP is looking for.

Not true, Archon in all it's incarnations uses a top-down combat system and OP already OK'd games like SD Gundam Gachapon Senshi which is similarly top-down (reminiscent of Blaster Master). It does however seem like the combination of strategy and fighting games is more common given this thread and a couple major fighting game franchises have tried their own hand at making strategy driven game modes.
