Jesus fucking Christ, it took them this long? They already had Quake Live, all they had to do was copy/paste the values over since all the scaling is the same as Quake 3 (300 units of speed in Quake 3 is the same as 300 units of speed in QC). It's just fucking insane to me how these people seem to be totally unable to judge game features on a cost vs. benefit basis because the cost for this is extremely low and the PR benefit is high. Really they should have started by making Quake Live with updated graphics and THEN added all of the new bullshit they launched with like Sacrifice and the hero abilities. I guess they were "taking a gamble" by trying to start wjtb something relatively fresh, but they paid absolutely zero attention to the details of user interaction (menus are god awful, too many obnoxious animations, matchmaking is trash, matches are too short so you spend lots of time in matchmaking, etc) and Sacrifice was a shitty game mode as well. Then a year later when everyone is well past the point of caring they start adding classic modes. Unbelievable.

Doom 2's deathmatch experience is not something I want again, really. It's like playing a top-down shooter from first person. You could say this about single player levels, but the intricacies of the level design and enemy variety add a lot to the experience. id's forte was actually single player (or co op, if you played it) long before it was deathmatch.
Quake 1/World is close to what I would want from an ideal multiplayer shooter, maybe Unreal Tournament.

He was partly right, but Romero was also immature and egotistical; he probably could have got what he wanted if he stuck around for the next game and continued to influence others at the company. You're hitting the nail right on the head here. Time and again we see different novelties take off in a similar fashion. We see a new market start off with an educated core of pioneer enthusiasts. Then, gradualy things get watered down and widely distributed. A more recent example of this is enthusiast pc hardware.
The ballooning of new segments prey on uneducated and ill-informed opinions. Whatever garbage people can be convinced to buy is eventually what the market ends up looking like for the most part. Why buy that second hand Hermann Miller or Steelcase when you can get a shiny new DXRacer for the same price?
Now, Im not saying this is bad, in fact there are a lot of good things that come of this. After all, nobody is forcing me to buy the low quality stuff.
In the end, we vote with our dollars. Make enough mistakes, and you wont return from the brink of oblivion…. or doom.

Yes, it's actually not terrible. The music is bad, the story is retarded "HEY FELLOW EPIC GAYMERS, RIP AND TEAR XDDDDD" garbage, the glory kills ruin the pace of the game and the engine limitations (12 enemies on screen at once) are trash, but the game itself is still entertaining and I'd give it a solid 6/10 - better than average, but not by much. Do not pay for it though

If you're trying to play DOS version of Doom through DOSBox and not some fancy port then launch "SETUP.EXE" that should be located in Doom's folder.

I liked it.
A lot of people didn't and it's understandable why (it's basically CoD in space with aliens, before CoD went to shit), but it has a special charm to me.
Even a mediocre shooter from years ago is better than whatever passes for a 9/10 today.
