Gacha is a loot box-style mechanic named after randomized toy vending machines in Japan, and it’s a common monetization practice in the Asian mobile market. So like Fire Emblem Heroes, which was designed around core gacha elements, this particular Pokémon mobile game revolves around collecting characters at various levels of rarity, sometimes paying for the ability to unlock them more frequently. But unlike traditional Pokémon games, those characters you’re collecting are trainers, not just the titular creatures.
>In Pokémon Masters, every pokémon is paired with a distinct trainer taken from one of the core games in the franchise, in what the game refers to as a sync pair. So if you want a particular creature to battle with, you’ll have to unlock the trainer associated with them. Think Brock and his rock partner Onix, Misty and the water pokémon Starmie, and iconic Red (the main character of the first pair of Pokémon games) and his fire-breathing friend Charizard. All are unlockable and playable characters in the game.
>Unlocking can be done a number of ways. You can buy in-game currency and just spend your way to a more expansive collection of trainers. You can also spend a reduced amount of a different currency you can earn in-game once per day to unlock a character of your choice. And then lastly, playing the story mode will let you battle and then recruit trainers and their associated pokémon into your roster.

They hand out freebies to entice further play, and the new players get loads of such handouts. However, the longer you play the less rewards you get, and the less you can keep up with the events, until the game becomes a chore. The game keeps introducing new drops, of characters you actually like, while devaluing the character/pieces you have by steadily increasing the power creep.
Examples: Final Fantasy Brave Exvius. The strong characters started out as 5 stars, max, then they introduced 6 star characters, then 7 star characters, all of which vastly outperform the 5 star characters. On top of this, you need duplicate drops of already extremely rare characters to get the limited 7 star ones. Not only that, you also have to spend insane amounts of resources to level these characters, which you get much of when you start.
However, once you pass the first tier, a team of 5 star characters, and move into the second tier, which are 6 star characters, which you need 5 of to keep up with events, the EXP gain rate plummets, so all of the resources you gained as a newbie will be vanished, even if you came into the game with the intent to min max exactly one team, which few people do, they're there for the characters, the brand and the relation.
Once you start even getting one 7 star character, the resources you need to spend to max them are gargantuan. And the first 7 star character you get will be the worst, Lightning, which was given to you to trick you into wasting your resources on this one character to get into a higher tier of play, when in fact she doesn't even have the power of a 7 star, the ones that do are original characters like Zeno, Esther, and that one samurai dude with the CG limit break. All of these characters are .0000067% drops, but the reason you WANT them is because the game has a buddy system that introduces you to the most powerful characters in the game, who break the game in half.
This buddy system allows you to take in random characters from other people, who specifically set these characters for rewards and points to use in drops or to level characters. The game itself has an algorithm that hands you these broken buddy characters a few times every hour, and you'll be sorting through a list to get them, you'll specifically look for them, want them, and theoretically spend money going through virtual lootboxes to get them so you don't have to rely on the buddy system to get through event content.
The game has a story that is completely trivialized by event and buddy characters. It's a shame, because you can tell from the start that the team treated it as a legitamate final fantasy game until around the half point.
Yes, I actually played this game. I never spent any money, and got through the half point of the story, but after a certain point it's all about the banner events and what's new, and the story has very few returns. So it becomes more and more boring to play. So I lost interest.
I played this and several other gacha games for free since I had a new phone and wanted to have fun with it since it could actually play games. I also deleted every single one. These gacha games are trash.
Not just because they're focused on psychologically manipulating the weak minded into spending cash, but because in the process of doing that they end up breaking their own damned game and make it not worth playing.
You eventually do have to spend money in order to "enjoy" the game, because it specifically focuses on ruining your fun after initiating you. But it's not fun, it's manipulating dopamine reward system shit, just like the gambling industry.

Actually a good question that continues my points, because every gacha game is centered around shitkicking the players who don't have good teams or quality drops, the game I entailed, Brave Exvius, had loads of absolutely useless characters, full of fluff, that easily get killed by regular monsters. On that angle, the bad characters also have badly animated sprites and abilities, so if you like using your 3 star Cait Sith or Barret, great, but don't expect flair.
You're arguing on the basis that you should pick characters you want, well let's go over that, why would you want a character outside of meta?
1. They're flashy.
LOADS of the good characters dropped with CG limit breaks, the ones that don't have those are made to be bad, or mid-tier. The events in FFBE are geared towards meta teams, and recent releases.
For example, in the period I played, Aerith was a new 7 star drop that had recently released and because I was a freshly picked newbie, I "naturally" got her and the Red XIII from the drop. Aerith in particular has loads of damage reduction skills and skills centered around limit breaks and revival and had bonuses against Light attacks. So what happened directly after? The Secret of Mana event, where the Mana Beast dropped nothing BUT light attacks and elements that Aerith could guard the party against, and Red XIII was a natural Limit Break chainer with a MASSIVELY DAMAGING limit break that also buffed him. Suspiciously, this newbie here got two Aurons, so that I could make a 7 star Auron, who also massively decreases the Mana Beast's damage potential by being a good single target debuffer and attack chainer.
I got this team in the two months I played, but right after the data miners for the guide site I looked up revealed ANOTHER SET of starred characters that vastly outperformed the literal best team that most people could formulate, which was literally Aerith/Red XIII/Auron and two other guys.
So after I got supremely bored and quit I looked through the update records on that site, and this had been happening literally every month, with bosses getting tougher and tougher, people complaining about it ad infinitum and people actually did leave at these points according to the site's player number tracker. The site's data was a series of mountains, this was a consistent occurrence.
With Gacha, the idea is to RESTRICT the extra paths to playing in order to farm whale bucks, then let up, then do it again. In gachas with PvP this is much more obvious. Gachas suck dick.

The microtransactions are hardly surprising. What I found startling was the degradation in character designs for legacy characters whose entire appeal is their designs. The characters look washed out, either due to a lighting change or by virtue of the models being textured poorly. Brock looks like he's genuinely been whitewashed, which is especially odd because I'd have thought blue checkmarks would have started screeching about such a large change by now.

Yeah, I was examining May's redesign and what I noticed about it was that she has so much unnecessary detail and almost all of it contradicts the visual language of her previous design. Original May wears a lot of simple, plain clothing that's still cute and fashionable; she has a lot of strong lines in her pose, and not much visual clutter. Nu-May is the complete opposite: her clothes are overly detailed, she isn't wearing gloves or socks, her hair scarf is just a bow instead of a practical do-rag, and she's wearing a tank top with a frilly undershirt instead of a thicker-looking vest. And that's not even going into detail about her waist, where she had a perfectly functional spats + skirt combination replaced with spats + hot pants overtop of them. It just looks so dumb.
She's much skinner, too, and although that may be an art style change it makes her look frailer. Original May looks like a girl who spends time outdoors because she likes playing rough or hiking or something. Nu-May looks like she walks through an urban park and takes selfies of a pumpkin spice latte.
These illustrations make me more frustrated the longer I look at them.

Like young wannabe hero finds a weakass sword other people threw away/dismiss because at first it looks weak and not special triple star super rare plus.
But the sword itself looks weak because it is a chaotic gambling god/demon in the shape of a weapon , it can hit weakly or one shot bosses or kill everything onscreen including party members. Have the game paths branch over different methods of figuring out how to abuse it properly, like making a merchant char so you can just feed it money for pay to win attacks. Or research chance manipulation magic. Or boost charisma to constantly attract sycophants so they absorb bad effects for you etc

I'm not seeing this make much money. I've just finished chapter 10 and I can get through the content pretty easily. You can just set the thing to autofarm for materials and even that barely takes minutes.
Does someone know if 10pull gives you extra odds? It doesn't specify that in the rates but I feel like that might just be an oversight since it's not fully released yet.
Are there any benefits to doing co-op? My pet peeve with it is how the default speed is so slow and if no one pairs up with you it will just give you CPUs to work with so what's with that? Do you get any extra bonuses if you play with friends or otherwise co op?
Anyway this is a genuinely generous gacha game unlike other self-proclaimed genuinely generous gachas.

Don't expect to actually play around with the mechanics in a gacha. These games throw balance out the window so you will never really think about what teams would work best together and more just end up rolling for a unit that you're pretty much required to use to clear certain content.
You would need physical, special, tech and heal for each of the 18 types. So 4x18 at the bare minimum to cover all the possible combinations.

You probably don't need to really grind if you know what units to use. It's fast if you use a speed multi-target hit unit that you also get for free.
The only annoying part is the grinding in multiplayer because despite having the auto battle on it won't go on 4x speed. I just have to reenter the stage every 5 minutes or so.
I don't know what I expected. It's just something you can do while doing something else. The game is basically an idle increment game.
