It just can't be. Like every old MMO, it was a product of its time. All of the people who would be playing it today are playing mobage now, because they only reason they played RuneScape back then is because it was new and free and they were dumb kids for the most part. MMOs rely on the lowest common denominator to pad out the world and make them feel alive, but now they can get their dopamine hits right in the palm of their hands, so they have no use for MMOs anymore.

You have to mass mine pure essence, iron ore, or coal ore to make money through trading on /v/scape. There's also other materials like flax people tend to be very interested in purchasing. Typical economy does not exist like it would on, but if you have enough of a high demand material and offer it at the right price, other players will buy it.

Alternatively you can just go the ironman route. While I do agree trading is an important part of Runescape, RS just happens to be one of the only MMOs where solo play is the norm, as >>16691501 discusses. I never found the lack of players to be that much of a negative. I still tend to see a player once every hour even during dead hours when only ~9 are online.
