When FFXV came out, advertising had already ceased to mean anything to me. I went in with low expectations and was still disappointed. It was trash. I also returned it.

Time to bring this thread back because as much of a shit vs shit conversation this is there is a clear answer.

15 is worse than 13 because it had all the mistakes from 13 to learn from and it still came out and over-hyped, overmarketed, unfinished pile of shit. It says a lot when Conan O' Brian had the best review for the game. If anyone had a better review then please come show it. FFXIII has an shit action battle system FFXV has a shit action battle system when they could have clearly copied and pasted. FFXIII has a story about fufilling a prophecy, FFXV has a story about fufilling a prophecy that is about "saving" the world but not really though since you let all of the countries that are mentioned in the game get massacred and society has to start from near zero. You have lore that FFXIII brushes aside into the bestiary. You have lore, characters, and actual plot points of the FFXV universe that are not explained in the game but in animes and CG movies. You have a 4 year wait from XII to XIII, and now you have a 9 to 10 development with FFXV coming out half finished and lazily paying people to tack on story DLC and a multiplayer mode. I can only imagine the gouging of content FFVII remake will have. Also FFXVs development cycle is complete shit vid related.

Tell me what you did to make the gameplay fun because using a combination of ravager and commando to make an enemy stagger was not fun. Knowing that with multiple actions you can't target who can get more heals than who and then your stuck with an already full hp character and then a character that is going to get 1-hit KOed anyway is not fun. Knowing that you couldn't have any control dodging attacks when characters are moving around and affected by the location they are in is not fun. Having the leader die ends the game is not fun. Having summons be ultimately useless are not fun. Locking the petal/lotus grid shit to prevent you from being too op is not fun. Having grinding in exp then having it showed as a stupid line that barely inches is not fun.

Hope is actually one of the more decent characters in these games. I agreed with most of his actions. He's super fucking pissed at snow for getting his stupid mom killed and is patient at waiting for his chance to kill snow. He is timid at first but then eventually learns how to nut up and shows initiative to charge into battle when pulse is being invaded by monsters. In the second game he actually grows up as a head scientist or some shit actively helping and guiding serah and noel. Out of any character in these shit games he has the best arc from loser to hero.

Also hope's mom is really fucking stupid she, a politicians wife, just abandons her 12 year old child to fight a battle on a rickety bridge with no weapons or armor or fighting experience. She reminds me of the son in Scary Movie 4 who is cheering and wants to fight in the war as we everyone else trying to run the fuck away she is legitimate parody.

Yes, except they lock it down like 90% of the game so you barely get a chance to actually use it. They should have had all the characters together for good by ~25% through the game and all classes for everyone unlocked by at least 50% through instead of railroading you with zero choices until near the end. The only fun part of that game was at the end doing the optional shit, if they had made the whole game like that it would have been a solid 5/10 at least.

They recorded lines a long time ago for FFVersusXIII, like around 2011 at least, Square doesn't really want to talk about how much of it has changed but the voice actors probably had access to an early script and have a much bigger understanding of what the original game was trying to be, because let's face it, XV is only using the assets from Versus, The story and tone are a complete mess.

This is a long time ago though, I wouldn't be surprised if they just happened to forget, but it must've been quite a strange situation to work on, with the characters getting re-written in between both versions.

Comparing to the sequels is cheating. Compare the games at release. I'm not even sure if all the DLC for XV is out yet. That said, while XIII had a couple better characters and better balance of them, it had many more absolutely shit ones. FFXV just had boring characters. I can agree 100 percent. but all the other reasons I listed in my first paragraph still make me hate 15 more.

So I will say I liked FF13. It actually felt like a Final Fantasy game.

FF15 catered to the mainstream of today: open world, simple story and action combat. And no cute girls. No I don't care about bromance.

FFXIII: Hallway, Quick battle system, bosses. If you skipped FF13 and went into FF13-2 you'd have more fun. Battle system consists of clearly defined roles, with characters being weighted towards certain roles, and you have to be aware of what's going on, switch at the right time, keep your equipment up to date, and organize to some small extent to keep up, since the game actually does get harder and some fights can be roadblocks.

FFXV: literally unfinished because of Tetsuya Nomura, combat is hold attack button with occasional QTEs and gimped magic, and you either finish fights in three seconds or two hours. There's no player customization because your weapon type is either shit like all heavy weapons and guns, or not shit like all fast weapons like swords and daggers. You can make magic, but it's not more tactically useful then simply holding attack and defending when you get a prompt.

TL:DR FFXV is fucking shit.

XV is an easy, cheap, soulless, single player MMO.

XIII at least had the ATB system.

FFXIII is a walking simulator. It also has the worst story and dialogue in any FF game, after a few hours I got fed up of hearing characters mindless blabbering about Fal'cie, La'cie, Pul'cie, Faggot'cie and cunt'cie and just stopped paying attention to the dialogue and started skipping the cutscenes.

FFXV despite all its problems, at least has exploration, sidequests and a more interesting world overall, and the story and characters are tolerable.

I enjoyed XIII 10 years ago when it came out when I was younger and a lot less jaded about videogames. Nowadays it's a real slog to replay, but there's still some enjoyment for me. XV was just boring and had very few redeeming qualities.

I haven't enjoyed a FF game since X, which is far from my favorite, but it's the last one I really played. Once they started in with that sequel to sequel shit with X-2 I bailed the fuck out. Never got around to playing XII. I tried XIII, but never really made it to the end, and I'm sure as hell not slogging through the post game and two sequels just to figure out what the fuck was supposed to even be going on.

Shame about everything else. It's brilliant writing when the bad guy decides to blow up the planet to get God's attention. Clearly an omnipotent being would be unaware of everything going on. Take a hint Barthandelus, he isn't interested in you. Wouldn't blowing up a planet be such a small scale to God anyway? Why would he even notice that? It's just such a retarded plan and maybe there was an explanation in the datalog, but that just highlights how horribly written the game was. So much of the story is just thrown in there. You won't know anything without checking it frequently. My favorite is reading the chapter summaries which discuss details that don't even happen in the game. I really think XIII is the definitive example of how not to write a story. Why the fuck was the digital tree military facility that was off limits with intense security 20 feet from the biggest city in Cocoon. And Lightning is able to just walk out of there. Where is the security? What stops all those monster from just walking over to Palumpolum? There is no guard post or a fence or anything. It's just stupid. The train station that Sazh sneaks into had an electric fence. It was more secure than a military outpost or whatever it was. They had to make everything within walking distant so you get this ridiculous world where nothing makes any sense logically. It's just terrible.
