Despite mainly using Playstation consoles since the first, I never really played much in the way of JRPG's (or many noticeably Japanese developed titles in general).

Never been too fond of turn based combat, don't find it as engaging as more traditional action RPG's. But I wouldn't mind trying some that really stand out.

While I would mainly be interested in PS2 or PSP, I have access to pretty much every 5-6th generation console and whatever I could get to work on my linux machine.

What are some of the stand out JRPG's (or anything japanese developed) of PS2 era that hold up today?

If you like the idea of historical fiction with a mixed bent towards both dark and weird (in varying ratios), consider the Shadow Hearts series. Has a turn based system, but the PS2 games require more player input for combat actions by way of the judgement ring (which rewards good hand/eye coordination and can be further impacted by status and equipment with various benefits and drawbacks to the player themselves).

It's PS1, but i recommend both suikoden 2 and breath of fire 4

and if you really hate turn based combat i recommend the tales series (mainly symphonia and abyss on the ps2).

I have played a total of 2 (two) games off any of those lists, neither western nor newer than 2015. The last major release I recall even buying at near full price was last light (christ it's been 6 years already).

Of course I have played Japanese developed titles, but I hardly consider something like Ace Combat, Metal Gear Solid, Gran Turismo etc to be something distinctly eastern. There is retarded shit you would expect out of a mecha anime in the first two, but it's still aimed at the western market.

When I say Japanese I mean like

I don't hate the combat, but I can't say I've every loved it (perhaps xcom?). Most JRPG's never really grabbed my attention and the combat never helped much.

Like Final Fantasy for example, don't really know much about it, heard the praise for it, but doesn't really seem interesting to me.

I've played a bit of Persona 4 and found it enjoyable, though haven't picked it up in a while since it's a bit of a chore playing on the original console, if I was emulating it and have it in the background and play it for half an hour and go back to other things (saving whenever would help too) then I'd probably put more time into it. That or if I had a Vita.
