Can someone who likes sandbox games explain to me why they're supposed to be fun? I get that you can do whatever you want and that's supposed to be the appeal, but when there's no stated goal, it's just aimless and boring.
>You can build a castle! You can make a rube Goldberg Machine! You can do anything you want!
Cool… Can I turn off this shit and play something actually fun that actually has a point instead, like Super Mario World? I'd rather do that.
>Yeah but y-you should at least try to make the Eiffel Tower though
It's an intangible structure, therefore I don't give a fuck about it. If I'm going to put a bunch of time and effort into making a model castle, I'd rather just make a real miniature with some toothpicks and Elmer's Glue and tweezers so that I have something real to show for my time.

recently in MC they added tropical fish and coral, so I made a multi-story aquarium with glass hallways and huge coral reefs and stocked it with a plethora of colorful fishies. Now I sit around and watch my fish swim around all day, it's relaxing and zen as fuck.

You dont like those games and that's fine. I like how you give the example of playing Mario World. That's fine. Go and do that. No one at all is forcing you to play sandbox games. It just seems like you made this thread to bitch about a genre you dont like.

But to answer your question, I don't see the appeal either, save for using it as a base for autistic roleplaying purposes. When I was younger I enjoyed graphical MUDs for that reason, and I enjoyed the threads recently by that anon that was generating creepy minecraft worlds then writing autistic diary entries and posting screenshots until something killed him. I still don't care for minecraft though, so maybe there really is something there that only true autists can enjoy.

I'm an autist who's assmad that noone makes good simulation or god games anymore. Sandboxes like Minecraft are the closest thing I can get to them, and it drives me fucking insane. I'm not really sure if it can be explained in terms other than that I enjoy the sensation of constructing a beautiful, decorated monument with well-thought-out architectural design, up until I realize that Mojang in ten years has never implemented any meaningful mechanical reason for any of it to exist, and that's when I start searching the internet for a game that doesn't exist again.
I would also like to take the opportunity to call Peter Molyneux the biggest son of a bitch to ever live for completely obliterating the last relatively promising god game to be developed in ten fucking years.

Sandbox games turn into shit when you realize that you will always leave the game in some state of disappointment. The game will always "end" when you either get bored or frustrated with it.

I kind of agree with OP. A pure sandbox game is really not that appealing. I still find games like Conan Exiles or Ark to be fun. There is some story lore to find, and some cool bosses to fight and the sandbox construction aspect has a point either to defend against wild creatures in PVE or against enemy players in PVP. Games that just don't have any narrative or goals are kind of just lazy in my opinion.

>All this autistic shitposting over what is actually a reasonable topic.
tl;dr: Sandbox games are first about exploration and mastery, and then are about self-set goals. It's okay to get bored of them.
The first 'sphere' of sandbox gameplay is about exploring both the world and the mechanics. Progression, objectives, etc only act as a guidance system for new players and an obstacle to be overcome efficiently by experienced players. After your first success there's usually very little reason to 'win' again using the most effective methods, and it's fine to be bored with the game after this point. Mods, of course, can drastically extend or alter this phase of gameplay, making it much more interesting and advanced for repeat playthrougths. This is why alternate-progression mods are considered so 'core' in Minecraft, they reinforce the primary gameplay loops of progression and exploration.
The second, and more important 'sphere' of sandbox gameplay, is self-motivated gameplay and goals. This is why games that aren't just 'sandbox' in nature, but have emergent and varied gameplay for excellent multiplayer interactions and replayability have such dedicated fanbases. It doesn't matter if it's autism-blocks, a text-based geopolitics simulator, or a freeform MMO economy, players making their own gameplay will always be fun to someone, especially if they can share the experience with others.
It's not "you can build the Eiffel Tower", nobody gives a shit about that and if you're playing a game because of what other people think is fun and cool then you're a fucking tool. It's about experimentation and achievement, backed by open-ended mechanics. "I want to build some autistic megastructure" not because the game tells me to, but because I think it's a neat idea and fun to do, push my luck with a risky expedition in Dwarf Fortress, outfit a legion of anonymous retards in Wurm, or try out new builds in an MMO like DDO. Make and accomplish goals, try new things, push your knowledge and mastery to the limit.

The intangibility of it is part of the appeal because it can be modified or destroyed without repercussion as long as it’s backed up.
>If I'm going to put a bunch of time and effort into making a model castle, I'd rather just make a real miniature with some toothpicks and Elmer's Glue and tweezers so that I have something real to show for my time.
Exactly. Sandbox’s are the hobby without the investment and don’t require a specific skill set, though possessing certain skills might actually enhance how much is gotten out of it.

The thing is in Terraria characters and worlds are saved separately. So even if the character KO'd permanently the world would still be there and any resources that were placed in the world would allow for your next character to bootstrap themselves. Also hearts are going to be renewable in 1.3.6 1.4

>you should at least try to make the Eiffel Tower though

Every videogame structure, character, sprite and polygon is intangible, from this logic we can deduct you don't give a fuck about games. Why aren't you making your toothpick model? Why are you here bitching about how Minecraft is shit? We already know.
