That's not even the problem. No matter how high the levels are, the battles never demand anything from the player besides having something that can singlehandedly steamroll the opponent's team. Ironically, Digimon went the "looks like a toy" route far faster than Pokemon. As early as the introduction of the new evolution level they started to drift away from weird gross comic book inspired designs to more slick robot knight designs, and while some of the newer designs are cool, it's arguable they lost their direction much faster. I could say the X-Antibody versions of various Digimon were an attempt at a reboot, but it didn't stick and the immediate next part of the franchise dropped them. I really liked the concept of N - a guy who was raised from birth to believe in a narrative, then slowly learning with the player's help that this narrative isn't as clear cut as he thinks it is. But the execution was off, what with him being the only character in the entire canon to be able to talk to pokemon, just so when he meets up with you your pokemon can plant the seed of doubt in him. And then that begs the question of what Ghetsis was planning to do if N actually believed someone's pokemon right off the bat the first time he's left on his own.
Gen 5's story as a whole is pure wasted potential. It would have been great to have a group that looks at the basic concessions of the pokemon universe, and ask "Why?" But then Game Freak got cold feet, and turned Team Plasma into a generic criminal gang that are just fronting as giving a shit about pokemon rights. I feel like Lillie was Game Freak partially recognizing this problem and was intended to be a reboot of the basic characteristics of N.

Actually all it did was reinforce how strange and different Pokemon are compared to regular animals. N was raised on the narrative that's regularly accepted here as fact, that you shouldn't use animals for dogfights, but Pokemon are genetically different and much different in attitude, that doesn't fly.
They're established to be fight-happy, friendly creatures, loads are malicious and all of them are sentient and all of them do in fact don't care that they're under the service of humans, and loads of legendaries are canonically just hanging out with the protag because they choose to, not because they're enslaved, and none of them are actually trapped in those pokeballs since loads of mons, both in the game and out, simply leave them if they want.
Essentially, N's whole question brought to the table was applying real world morality to a world that's fundamentally alien and where normal morality isn't practical or correct. That was the entire intent, since most of the goons in BW1 were actually there for pokemon, while in BW2 the only ones left were the criminals and predators fostered within the group due to the influence.
This actually aligns with shit like the Democratic party or actual ecoterrorists, where the main purpose of the group in the inner circle starts becoming apparent, people leave and all that's left are the disruptive and crazy who joined for power.
Despite being told through simple means, the group itself was designed to suck in the PLAYER by applying a conventional mentality as a hook, only to betray them when it turns out that the leader is an utter douchebag, which is ACTUALLY THE CASE with loads of these types of groups, and the tactics used to "suck in" the player are the same tactics these groups use to suck in people for their cult: Appeal to conventional morality but keep the main goal of the group hidden with a tiered system.
N was literally raised to be the fall guy and is a perfect example of the people they try to recruit in these cults.

Zoroark leads you to N when you get to the castle, in both games, and "dissapears" as if Zoroark transformed into N, when it's established in both lore and media that Zoroark is one of the "Native" pokemon to N's castle since it's practically his brother/father. People missed the whole still where N is playing with a Zorua in the opening credits and there was another still of him playing with it in his room, but I can't find it. He also uses that Zorua as a Zoroark on his main team. These pokemon are abused pokemon he was sent to play with to condition him, due to his ability to speak to them.
This and the whole wild child backstory led dumb people to believe that N's a Zoroark due to fan bullshit, despite nothing in media or the game outside of this moment pointing to anything like that. People somehow think he doesn't use Pokeballs because he changes his teams with the area you find him in, but he does use pokeballs, so it's based on a lie.

Really the sheer multiplicative effort required to throw out 800 unique models and animations on top of the new models for NPCs and attacks is a gigantic undertaking, even with a database of prior animations.
I can see why they're cutting shit, especially since they're expected to rush this out due to the anime, and this is mostly due to the franchise being a thing where everything has to be just so and continuous, despite the fact that the contracted companies are different in scale.
There's already an established anime industry in Japan and it's fully contractual with shitloads of people working on everything, while Game Freak is this once-humble studio that barely gets more people each gen, and even with the people they have it's monumental, since the tasks related to video game making are in high demand, with loads of different roles rather then anime's writing/concept, producing/directing and animating.
Vidya requires all of that and programming, 3D art which is scarcely used even in the anime industry despite some high profile examples, and game design, which is still infant in regards to job shit. Loads of people in game industries have to multitask.
Next, while Game Freak is an established studio, their work has mainly been limited to small handheld shit, and this is a mainline console game despite the technicality, and while they're used to switching engines, it's clear the expected scale they either decided on or was forced onto them due to Breath of the Wild's success has blindsided them.
Loads of the fields shown in Sword and Shield might have actually been designed and implemented by people who worked on Breath of the Wild, actually, considering it's so similar, it's uncanny.
Objectively I understand exactly why they did this despite having everything in prior games, they were forced to.
As a fan, of course i'm pissed, but ultimately i'm still getting the game, not because I'm a diehard which is true but because I ultimately understand and still like what they're doing gimmick wise. The problem is that The Pokemon Company International seems to keep other teams away from Game Freak for core Pokemon game development. Genius Sonority should have been brought in or absorbed into Game Freak when the jump to 3D occured because of their own experience with the console 3D Pokemon games, but instead they were relegated to making Pokemon Trozei games on the 3DS. Plus Game Freak isn't the only one that does the Pokemon 3D modelling in the games. Creatures Inc. is also responsible for that too, and they have just as many staff members as Game Freak.
I think the real issue is that Game Freak wants to move away from being THE developer of Pokemon. They've been developing and releasing more and more non-Pokemon games in the past decade. Plus Town seemed like a pretty polished game when it was first shown off, though I'm suprised we didn't see anything this E3, maybe next direct.

Similarly, I think some Genius Sonority employees were brought in to Game Freak, James Turner is actually one of them. Not that I'd trust GS after what they did to Denpa Men. Of course, they're 2D. They don't have any of the ugly features real humans would have. Just look at how "clean" and stylized they're drawn in Ken's style, none of the weird nasty subhuman features are transferred over, in fact, he looks completely different from his drawn counterpart. He looks more "white" (in the most minimalistic sense, since pokemon was never stylized to always look white aside from Lt. Surge and a couple of other characters), but the other retarded anon doesn't realize that style clashes with the real world aesthetic. More than the majority of the characters in the pokemon world would look completely different (and ugly as fuck) if converted into a real (not realistic) environment.

Let's be honest, the only difference between that and the Distortion World is the latter is longer and looked cool back on the DS. True, but I'm coming from the perspective of someone that skipped SM. I picked up Ultra Moon because I was interested in the idea of exploring Ultra Space and the trailers made Megalopolis look like dystopian Lumiose city.
I will admit that some of the ultra biomes were cool, but I was so disappointed with how half-baked the ultra space exploration turned out to be that I quit before reaching the league.

Fair enough. The postgame is better than SM, but that's not saying much because SM's was literally just doing busywork for the Looker, exploring some of Poni, and the Battle Tree. Honestly USUM adds more stuff during the game than in the postgame. Lots of little sidequests that flesh out the world a bit, for example. I'll say I rather they put all the effort from the minigames into making more normal gameplay loop related stuff. I'm not going to say the game gets better at the league, but I will say it brings Hau from one of the worst rivals in the franchise to an interesting inversion of the Red/Blue dynamic. It also has a nice little moment if you didn't box your starter. Really these little touches are all that's keeping me from hating Game Freak sometimes, you'll notice there's no shit like that in XY for example.

I think the problem is also Game Freak hasn't announced which Pokemon are getting the axe. If they published a list of the ~500 Pokemon making it in, and most normalfags saw the ones they care about making it in, there may not be as much of a backlash. (Unless they fuck it up and mistakenly kick a lot of fan favorites while leaving in relatively unpopular or disliked Pokemon.)
They could also just add patches to add different Pokemon based on region, egg type, etc. to free up space on the cart. (They'd have to be free or people would lose their minds worse than now.) For example, you could trade Mew with someone if both trainers have either a patch for Kanto Pokemon or a patch for mythical Pokemon.
I knew having this many Pokemon would backfire on them someday, but they can still take a better approach than what they've currently done.

You do know HGSS used 2.5D stuff, right? That was Gen 4's thing it introduced. Similarly, I think around Gen 5 they started generally shrinking route/map size. Unless you're trying to say the bigger maps were better and sometimes they are. I don't actually know how big the maps of any generation are, mostly because I'm not autistic enough to go tile by tile, but I think there are only a handful of really long/large maps in Gen 5, in comparison to Gen 1 having a couple, Gen 3 having that one really long one, or Gen 4's mountain. Gen 6 and 7 had almost no big maps. The reason I think you really do like small maps is because of how compact Johto is. That's fine with me personally, content matters more than the maps. Although when it comes to Gen 1 and 2 it's hard to tell which is worse, the same Pokemon over and over in every trainer fight, or the low level curve of Gen 2. HGSS fixed the latter, but FRLG was too faithful of a remake to fix much of those teams. I seem to have lost my train of thought, but I'll let this go anyway, seems important to talk about.
