The actual scary thing is that people don't have to be sociopaths to be horrible. Loads of people actively and conveniently deny their own sense of empathy if it suits them, which compared to a lack or dulled sense of empathy is probably even more monsterous. And the rest are ignorant and being controlled by these people.
The actual issue rests with self-centeredness and narcissism, which isn't unique to sociopathy or psychopathy. It's usually either due to trauma, or abuse, or societal alienation. Or hell, genetics.
It's also driven in some cases by hitting rock bottom, then overcompensating on the way back up, using that drive to never hit that place to justify everything they do.
Of course someone with money did something to get it. The mega billions did loads of shit that can't be justified from anyone but their perspective. But I don't think that was the point. The point is that everyone around you has some form of darkness, and it's hard to organize into neat categories.
