I don't think it gives her any more autonomy than she already shows in the main game, she's already shown to have a personality of her own, it just gives her a little more background. I guess it kind of explains why she's so obsessed with James and what exactly she is, since it shows her as a "being" of sorts with an actual consciousness instead of a prop or puppet controlled by the town, designed to entice James.

Is it necessary, though? Probably not. It's not bad, but it doesn't hurt to play it.

We know that Silent Hill can make creatures from its inhabitant's desire and sins and this what only outlined a little more clearly with the whole "it was indian land at one point and the redskins believed that everything in it was alive" book. It still leaves the question of the value of a human life. If Maria was made for James, does that mean she's a new soul? Does she even have a soul? If people can just be mass produced then why bother punishing sinners? Born from a Wish is fine lore wise since it just tells us what we already know.

Theres such a thing as making something so mysterious that it comes off as shallow. By giving Maria a character and a tragedy, that she is driven into doing the bidding of the town of her own will rather then being made for the purpose, it simply adds more depth to the story and changes how you think of the character.

Death of the author is only true in the sense that the author has no more validity to explain facts about their story after it is written when they can be entirely wrong about it. Plenty of authors forget exactly what they wrote and can have a less accurate knowledge of their own work than a dedicated reader. A prime example being JK Rowling erroneously claiming she never said Hermione was white, and George Martin straight up admitting to forgetting plenty of things he wrote. In the sense that death of the author means "the author's identity and intentions mean nothing" (primarily what it means) it's obviously wrong, as a jap could write a story about a woman wearing a dress and it wouldn't be in any way a criticism of muslims forcing their women to wear garbage bags.

Long ago there was this "plot summary" on GameFAQs which turned SH1 into the same shit, the short version is, Harry was drawn to SH because of his guilt about not telling Cheryl she was adopted, yes, that's it.

There was also this weird thing about Harry being a pawn in Alessa vs Dhalia's fight for control over something in which every time Harry died or reached the ending one of them just cleared the board and started over, this was basically their explanation for why on NG+ you never went to the intro level again during subsequent playthroughs.
