Remember all those collect/battle/trade monster games that tried to steal Pokemon's thunder? Stuff like Digimon (debatable), Monster Rancher, Robopon, and Dragon Warrior Monsters?
Do you have any favorite monsters from one of those series? Do you collect merch for them?
Not exactly a "Pokemon Killer", but I really appreciate the variety and style of the monsters in Monster Hunter. My favorite is Barroth, and I'm sad there's not enough merchandise for it. Sure there's a keychain, minifig, and a doll, but nothing like a giant statue the likes of Rathalos gets.
Another favorite worth mentioning is RustTyranomon, who only really lives from the existence of the Digimon World Re:Digitize Decode game. Sure it shows up in later games, but they'd rather make a figurine of BelleStarmon and give her an X-Antibody form, than to give a better Mugendramon one.

Quit being a baby and play World 1 faggot. You can also try Dawn or Dusk.

DW1 care mistakes are:
>not feeding (you have over 1 in-game hour)
>skipping sleep (9 hours!)
>ignoring poop (use porta potty faggot)
you have to be literally retarded to make a care mistake. you can also look up charts with evolution conditions so you have no excuse you big gay sissy.
only pain in the ass is the sweat bubble (80/100 tiredness) which drains happiness/discipline fast (game checks every 4 hours and substracts lifespan if happiness is below +81). trainings give you 6-10 per session (off/def: 9, spd: 8, bra: 6, mp: 7, hp: 10). resting at punimon's reduces 10. clinic reduces 20, sirloin 5. sleep reduces 100 (assuming all 9 hours).
protip: always train, battles are a waste of time. first priority is unlocking store for autopilots and porta potties. PAL non-UK versions have a bug that makes them unwinnable.

>protip: always train, battles are a waste of time.
I never had the patience to beat the game the entire way through, but the only way I managed to get anywhere was by realizing that battles give you way, way more experience than training, and that training is a waste of time. I also heard you can overtrain? Idk, you probably know better than me. The only Digimon game I could really get into was Anode/Cathode Tamer on WonderSwan. Simple Pokemon like thing that was just different enough to not feel like a complete ripoff. And I'm gonna complain about the sequels still being Jap only until some autist with more time than me does something about it.
And to actually respond to the OP, the Monster Rancher anime was really good too. Much better than the Pokemon anime. Almost Digimon quality. I was surprised to realize that the game it was based on was what it was though. I get the appeal, but it wasn't what 9 year old me wanted when I rented the game and expected an adventure like the anime showed me.

>realizing that battles give you way, way more experience
you got the wrong game then. there's no experience in DW1, only stats. normal training with boosting foods yields like 13+6 (primary+secondary stat) points. if you're autistic enough to figure out bonus try (rigged to be winnable 50% of the time, ignore gold poop), you can get up to 2.25x that (assuming 50% winrate), whereas battles give you like 8 points total on average assuming strong opponent.
DW: NO (PS4) is the one where battles give WAY more stats than training.
As for Re:Digitize I haven't played it so I have no idea.

i wish monster rancher wasnt dead. i wonder why those funky cape and mask dudes only appeared in the earlier games.
there was this okay gameboy advance game with a bunch of monster girls and such i dont remember the name of it but i remember an imp girl in a robe and a popstar harpy. i think it had 2 versions like pokemon tends to do.

Same thing. You know what I meant. Your stats go up way more from battles than training. But I guess I didn't figure out how to game the system. Regular training is certainly shit. I've only played the first couple Digimon World games, not the newer ones that are in the style of the first.

Yokai Watch deviated enough in gameplay that made it not so bad on its own, but the first two are pretty simple in combat. I don't know how much 3 changes things but I hear it's better. You seem to get some fancy 3x3 grid to move Yokai around on. The designs are very hit or miss though and most are miss.

First time I'd seen Telefang's real cover. I first heard of it from that old Pokemon fansite from the early 2000s, http://catfish.it.cx/trsrockin/trsrockin.com/fakegames.html#dia but never really looked into the real game. Sounds like a fan translation exists now. Is it any good? Does it have cute critters?

The sequel was pretty tight. I think dark spectrobes were a bad idea because the dark version was always better. There's also this issue:
>get a spectrobe
>it's fast, has a good 3 hit combo and special move
>"wow this spectrobe kicks ass! I bet it will kick more ass if I evolve it!"
>evolve it
>now it's slow, fires one slow mid-damage projectile with a very low rate of fire, bad special
>it even looks less cool
It's the blue beetle guy, but there are plenty of other examples. Thankfully, the reverse can be true with shit spectrobes. That's another thing: their names were hard to remember.

I really wouldn't recomend those, just because the games after 4, just took away features and then made training and unlocking moves way worse, it helps in 4 when you have the monster guides. This website is old as shit, but it tells you everything about the monsters growth, plus 4 has a story that isn't cancer surpisingly, their's actual growth and progresstion, for the most part.

Judging by the screenshots I see there is some kind of mostly tournament-oriented shounen plot, and I absolutely love it when jap games have that, I would play it even if it had bad shounen tournament plot like in PSP's Steambot Chronicles, thanks for mentioning the game and the guides, at the very least it's one more game series in my backlog now

Yeah, heard the gba ones were good, the guides are a good way to get the most out of your monsters, hell the second game had a lot to it, although I think it's actually the hardest in the series, just because their's a lot of ways you can lose your monster besides age, or too much injury.

Man, I remember blowing my ultimate in the final battle without knowing there was a phase 2. I ended up punching and blasting it back to bounce him to victory, which took a bit because even with the best equipment you did dick for damage. Origins was pretty fun at the time, and it gives you this slick fucker that becomes a cactus dragon and protects peoples dreams.
