I recently got gifted an HD Sony Wega by a neighbor and I'm loving it so far. All i needed to do was fix some overscan issues through the service menu and it becomes a solid HD display.
Who /crt/ here?

Can someone tell me why Meleefags insist on playing on nothing but a CRT? The game only runs at 60FPS so I don't get the whole "muh refresh rates" meme

You fucked up. HD CRTs have digital processing running in the background which can add input lag.

All those hi def resolutions it supports (480p, 720p, 1080i) are processed digitally like any HDTV. Playing 6th gen games via component cables and 7th gen games and up should be fine, but I wouldn't hook up anything using composite, s-video, or SCART.

You can try, but there's always tye possibility of damaging the set.

Why do people keep asking this?
It's to avoid input lag. Plain and simple.
Imagine if you were a professional baseball player and suddenly the ball was changed to be heavier or lighter than the standard.
As a casual player, you wouldn't notice the difference.
But as a pro who's put thousands of hours into the sport, it throws you off.
>>16349248
Yes, you can remove all input lag.
However, it only works on 1080i resolutions, causes distortion if you run it through HDMI, and mentioned here >>16349293 you can fuck up the tv if you change the wrong setting.

I think it's the opposite. Even fags on /v/ don't remember how old games look like so if you show them actual PS1 graphics they'll be like "no way, that's not how they looked like" and they imagine them looking around PS2 level. Hell I remember a thread where people were shocked to remember that Morrowind was released in 2002 because they were so convinced it's a 90s game (nevermind its water effects alone couldn't exist in the 90s).

I'm super jelly of that wide crt. I Have some nice SD and HD CRTs but all of them are 4:3 and under 19 inches. most games don't even have 4:3 support theses days, so even I set the game to a high resolution like 2560x1920 the game still outputs in a wide "letterbox" format. I'd love to play bayonetta and DMC5 on a big wide CRT. (i'm in the process of moving right now so I have to put a hold on hunting for a new monitor).

What water effects? All the water in the game is completely flat with decals for ripples and a tinted screen when underwater. The overworld can't even have rivers at different elevations because the water level is built into the maps.

That's a myth. None of you have HD CRTs, do you? Didn't think so. Because no one does. I get no noticeable input lag on my 720p/1080i Toshiba 32HF73. The real downside to HD CRTs is that 240p looks like ass and 480i is only passable. But 480p and 720p look incredible compared to LCDs.

It came out in 2002, but it could have been released in 1998-1999. In fact, it could have been much better if it was released back then, seeing as how the development cycle began as a followup to Daggerfall on the Xngine (Bethesda's in-house engine used for the Terminator games and all of the Elder Scrolls games up to that point) rather than a generic piece of shit on NetImmerse. The design shifted from awesome 90s-era swords and sorcery to racebaiting Michael Kuckbride bullshit.

some CRT HDTV's (and projectors) do line multiplication instead of buffered scaling/processing, so those would be free of input lag.

Be careful when you move the thing.
If it gets exposed to too many vibrations the shadow mask will get damaged, and the image will degrade in the corners.
My old tube keystoned in the bottom right corner, and the colors split.

So, component cables on a CRT would be the best option for a PS2, right? What about N64 and Wii?
Also, are there any CRTs that can have all 3 hooked up at once or do you need to use something like a splitter?

I think this is vanilla Morrowind. Haven't played vanilla in a long time so i can't confirm.
OpenMW doesn't have this ripple displacement effect, it just uses transparent ripple texture sprites overlaid onto the water. Maybe that's what you were thinking of?

Not all scalers are digital scalers, and not all digital video scalers are created equal, particularly if the scaler is implemented in hardware rather than software.
Line buffers are expensive in hardware, especially in the 90's. I.e. if an HD CRT did the scaling in hardware, you could expect 2 or 3 _lines_ of latency (not frames), which is about 0.06 ms for a 640x480 image.

BTW, a lot of old PC monitors ARE in fact HD CRT's, so if HD CRT = lag, then that's basically saying every 90's computer monitor is laggy. Just fish one out of your closet to disprove this.

Do PS1 emulators have increased internal resolution by default? That could explain it.
5c12b9 No.16380951

It does introduce lag but not the way you think it might. The higher you set the resolution the lower you can set the refresh rate. It takes more time for that electron beam to scan that high level of detail than it would a lower one, you can get more scans per second by bumping down the resolution to 640x480, often hitting 160+hz.
That said HD CRTs are often their own class of televisions, no one uses the term HD CRT for PC CRTs because the phrase PC CRT already exists and encapsulates what it means pretty well.
>>16380926
some do, most generally use guides that have the initial set up run the games in high resolution.

You're right about larger resolutions taking a longer time to complete the image scan, but that doesn't effect latency, that effects the maximum refresh rate at a given resolution. HD CRT's still had to put out 60Hz content, and they did this by having a faster pixel clock rate than SD CRT's.

i agree component cables on a CRT is best for PS2.
on wii if you play mostly 4:3 games like gamecube games or older emulated games, CRT is the way to go, but if you play a lot of wii games you might want to use an HDTV as the vast majority of wii games support 480p natively and are meant to be played in 16:9.
anecdotally i've only owned two CRTs with component input and they each only had one of them, i have no switch and have to swap cables. i was looking into gcompsw: https://shmups.system11.org/viewtopic.php?t=50851

Thanks, anon. I think I'll go with CRT for the Wii as well, since I do want to focus more on Gamecube games.
That gcompsw thing looks like a great solution but 220$ is pretty steep. Might just suck it up and swap cables, the good old caveman way.
