In my decades of gaming only golf games and blitzball got my attention. I believe it has to do with the static backgrounds and repeating action and deeply closeted homosexuality of team sports. Golf probably has the most heart attacks on the field that any other sport, showing that even the most unhealthy and elderly can keep activate. I would think that MMA would transition well should they give their rosters special moves and arcade like fireballs for fun. In short, Hotshots Golf 3 is peak sports game.

As for how it is, I'd say that it's a great game. To me, it feels like a mix between Mario Kart and NBA Jam. It's also a very tactile game, in that it's one thing to watch it being played, but it's completely different when you're the one playing it. Firsthand playing makes you all the more appreciative of the crazy shit that people do in it. 100% recommended if you like sportsball in any capacity. Even one of my best friends, who doesn't like anything sports at all, loves the shit out of it. It's just unadulterated fun.

THPS2 and 3 are the best.
2 stimulates more creativity and thinking, it feels more like skateboarding.
3 made scoring way too easy with reverts and completely broke any sense of "realism" (but still arguably the best).
THPS4 had good levels, but I hate the way they padded the game out by requiring each goal to be done individually.
What made THPS2 good was coming up with lines, learning all the tricks, learning gaps, and the difficulty, all these aspects became irelevant in 3/4.
3/4 you spend more time looking at your balance meter and feels more like "button mashing", I just kinda zone out when playing them
THUG2 managened to return to a more acade like pacing with optional "rpg elements" from THUG1 (which were more annoying than anything).

my sportsball roommate has gotten me to respect football with madden games, and as an fps player I was surprised how much crossover there is between the two. You need sharp eyes, quick decision making and fast reactions because it's only seconds between your quarterback (ball passer) getting the ball and him getting sacked, doubling the distance you need to cover, but you can't throw too fast because you wont notice your guy is running right into an enemy who intercepts the ball and scores on your sorry ass. It's fast paced during plays but with down time inbetween to plan and strategize, it trains your ability to stay motivated, to adjust to circumstances, to not get cocky or choke under pressure, and to never give up on a comeback because crazy shit can happen. It's very intimidating learning a whole new game from scratch and all of its weird historical rules and quirks but my roomie and I have a blast playing madden franchises together.
If you want a recommendation for a good football game, my roomie says madden 2006 is still modded to this day, and espn 2k5 is considered as one of the best of all time.
