>Can a game be funny to begin with?

Perhaps only once, at most. First time you play a game and hear a really funny joke, you might legitimately laugh out loud. On future playthroughs, now that you know when the joke's coming and what the punchline is, it's kinda hard to LOL at old material you heard before.

I remember laughing my ass off when I first saw Ni no Kuni's stand-up comedy routine. Nowadays on new playthroughs, I merely smile when I watch that cutscene these days. It's still well-written comedy imo, but jokes only works best when they're completely new, surprising, and unexpected.

Psychonauts - the last good thing to come from Tim Schafer (well, this and Costume Quest). While it suffers from a few design decisions, it's ambitious, funny, and surreal as fuck

Chulip - kiss people to make them stop being NEETs. Bizarre and kind of scary sometimes

The Adventure of Hourai High School - JRPG/school life simulator that starts with you being pushed out an airplane to make sure you make it to the opening ceremony on time.

Funny the first time. Mr. Ulmeyda did nothing wrong.

A huge "what the fuck" but then you realize that they're glow in the dark CIA niggers part of a multimedia campaign to create loyal soldiers for the United States, culminating in a fight that takes place in both reality and a virtual world that serves as the final test for initiatives. Or something like that. Alter Ego is fucking confusing and that makes it even more terrifying.

Plenty of visual gags and descriptions that play off with gaming archetypes, for example the conveniently shaped lamp, the tile puzzle that is completely useless to memorize but you can and it will make you progress in a later part except you were meant to fail it either way, the way certain objects are just conveniently placed where you know they're gonna be useful (for instance, the water cooler in Hotland whose cups magically transfer back when you leave the screen), pretty much the entirety of the Mettaton area and boss fight, it's all little things that make the game feel like it's got its own sense of humor. Of fucking course if you look at it through the eyes of tumblrtale it falls apart but never forget that it's not the fault of the developer, despite him being in cahoots with Autismus Maximus and Soy Boy Extraordinaire Andrew Hussie. You gotta learn to have fun even when something is not directly for you, or else nothing really is.

Like, you wanna talk how bad Undertale is, there's loads of criticism, the humor really isn't one of them.

You may like Jazzpunk, op. It's a theme park ride style light puzzle/walking sim game that I think is a good way to kill a few hours if you're into that sort of thing. It made me laugh a bit, rewards exploration, has some neat aesthetics, has a very weird general feel and has a decent amount of content.

Full disclosure: literally who worked on it (didn't make it, I think did voicework), so you may like to pirate it. I would also suggest you not watch too many reviews if you're on the fence. It is, after all, a theme park ride. It's only new once.

4365fb  No.16223926

>>16223904

Absolutely pirate it, it appears hipster as shit, but surreality suberscedes. It should have been an itch or gamejolt thing. Not saying it is bad, it is far too short and triggered every journo to say, why do games have to be games? I thought it was fun, but not the price of admission for sure.

4365fb  No.16223960

I came back to mention something, thinking gamejolt and all reminds me of Obra Dinn. Pretty surreal and decently put together as a full package. That's it. Megaton Rainfall, it started out as some PSVR exclusive initially but made it to PC. No, it is not VR required, either.

444337  No.16224021

>>16223926

I think if it was longer it was at risk of being a chore, personally. It has a constrained set of ideas and does them all justice pretty well, and I think having more content would add more opportunities to screw up, plus the novelty of the game's gimmicks would wear off unless it pulled something dramatic like Frog Fractions (arguably it kind of does), and even then, I think the same question applies: could a game like Frog Fractions have been made longer in a good way and not outstay its welcome? Already the game transitions from subtle, hidden gags to more blatant ones, to a sort of carnival atmosphere, briefly takes a break and then railroads the player in fun but more constrained activities to wrap up. I'm not sure where it could go from there.

The appraisal about marketplace is fair; the flavor is certainly closer to games on the platforms you nominated, but Steam has much worse already on it in my view.

I also think it's kind of a tricky game to market generally because it doesn't translate well to a compelling trailer without ruining the experience by priming the player on the tone to expect which spoils the surprise.

Also, related surreal game/literally who greentext:

>heard chuck tingle's books were getting a game of sorts

>think that was interesting and the first trailer was passable, forget about it

>investigate what happened a year later

>turns out it was a Kickstarter project

>turns out literally who was responsible and ran off with the money and cancelled the project without doing any work

Amazing that even years on from gamergate she's still living trash and hasn't changed.

Speaking of Playstation surreal games, I found Juggernaut to be more surreal than horror. I'd say the same about Yume Nikki, really.

444337  No.16224217

Now I think about it, D4: Dark Dreams Don't Die and Killer is Dead are both pretty surreal games too. D4 was kind of short and ends on a cliffhanger (and will never be finished), but had some interesting ideas, is visually distinctive and has a good sense of humour and fun presentation. The same could be said about KiD except it's by no means short and one can get the feeling that it may be caught up in its own greatness at times and is kind of up itself, but it plays pretty well. It's not very humorous, though, mainly surreal in that unique Japanese way. I don't regret playing them, and would replay KiD if I had the time.

>>16224059

I guess I'm not quite understanding the point. So long as games have a huge consumer market and huge potential for profit, we'll see this shit from 'game journalists' looking to get some of the pie, and society has always been the worse for its trends. Plus, it's all exacerbated by the death of old fashioned media and agglomeration of small and medium media producers into an oligopoly of a few titans seeking to suck the marrow out of the bones of gaming now that it's fully commercialized.

I also think pinning the blame on Jazzpunk is a bit unfair when it follows precursors that defined the cinematic/casual/games-as-art genre like The Journey, literally everything by David Cage, etc, especially in the context of their positive reception from people and financial success. Perhaps it's slightly responsible for what you say, but if companies decide to make a casual cinematic game, it'll be because these huge successes made the economic case for such actions. Jazzpunk is at the end of the day just a modestly successful title and has not imprinted itself on society, even if it was a media darling at the time it was launched.

Besides, people are fucking retarded anyway. When you hear about Valve scrapping complexity like variable paths in caves and shit because public playtesters got lost for half an hour walking in a circle on a tiny map (I think this was in developer commentary in Half Life 2 Lost Coast) and whatnot, that's not the fault of casual shitbag journalists.

Boringlands, Too is a product of a broken home.

Boringlands was fine-ish, with a bunch of pop-culture-reference challenges that weren't in the plot itself, so that was tolerable. Never mind the whole Code Hackers swiping. 2 was technically superior, as money embezzled from SEGA can pay for a lot of decent programming. The game runs on a toaster, and plays very well. The writing is SJW horseshit, all of the heroes are diversitards, and the villain would be a hero if he wasn't written to be a one-dimensional asshole. The DLCquel expands on Jack's character, showing that he was somewhat altruistic and a generally cool guy, but the heroes and other characters fucked him over (not the playable characters this time around), driving him into paranoia, when he was trying to save the day without killing everybody.

BUT Pansy Bitchfraud and Captain Cuck still had their sticky hands all over the writing, so they're only playable if you fucking ignore everything in them.

It's also special because it's one of those shows you can watch in sub or dub. The dub doesn't try to translate dialogue directly at all and goes on it's on tangents all the time. It's also a hard choice between DIO doing silly voices and Bobobo's English VA, who, coincidentally, voices Oldseph in Stardust Crusaders dub.

English Narrator is superior fight me

English is pretty funny. He sounds more like an old man who's senile, whereas the japanese sounds like a young intern doing the narrating and isn't quite sure what to do.

I kinda miss the colorful, overblown humor comedy anime trend we got across the 2000s. Are there any recent examples? besides pop team meme

0a3f3b  No.16234023

>>16234011

I wouldn't even consider pop team epic in the same category as stuff like bobobo. Probably because one was a 4koma (I think) and the other was a full on manga. It leads tho differences in gag styles. Pop team epic does short jokes with a quick punchline, whereas bobobo has the luxury of having a continuing storyline and longer set ups.

That's a good clip. Honestly, Bobobo reminds me of Xavier Renegade Angel a bit. IIRC, they both aired on Adult Swim at relatively the same time. I like Xavier more but that doesn't mean I don't love Bobobo as well. My only melancholy is that none of my friends wanted to watch it with me.

Oh yeah, forgot about this.

It seems like a shitty survival horror game, but there's plenty of hilarious shit in it that only people who played the game will feel they're any funny.

>you have to go out of your way to save your dumbass friends, one of which is a dindu who gets lobotomized, but you can still rescue him only brainless and if you do so every single thing he utters is pure gibberish throughout the rest of the game

>The KILLERMAN quiz that has nothing to do with reasoning

>Instead of being dropped to the final boss, you're forced to partake in a Toy Story ripoff that has nothing to do with anything

That being said, the game is legit uncannier than any other horror game I've ever played. It's the fucking textures, man. Even though everything is fake nothing feels like it is and the true ending is just sad.

>>16223673

Kikestarter project whose team ran out of money long ago but still want to deliver the game, what's puzzling is that they made the core thing already but they fell into the feature creep meme and now can't release the game without cutting edges.

>>16213029

If anything what's funnier is that its name is Greg Nightmare and that it's scarily accurate in that yes, the minor ministries have much more power than every other position in any govt ever and they WILL use their power for their agenda and a (((foreign nation))) CAN and HAS already exploited them, look at Soviet Russia with Stalin using his position as secretary or (((Lyndon Johnson))) as VP.

Another good game with oblique humor is Tail of the Sun.
