Don't settle for 20XX. Even ignoring the shit design the roguelike meme gives it, it gets a lot of simple things about X wrong that keeps it from feeling right.
>Attacks are either charged or uncharged, with no in-between state
>The Zero-themed character's attacks don't change with his movements
>Attack position is fixed to your character, so you can't dash and shoot to hit enemies lower to the ground
>Jumping on a wall doesn't push you away from it at all
I don't know what else I'd recommend OP besides obnoxiously shilling my aggydaggy. There's not much call for engaging platformers these days.
Obviously you could try ZX, or a fangame. There's a good deal of feature-complete fangames to choose from.
