I know people that hate racing games because 'they feel restrictive' but love forza horizon 4. Possibly also because its the only good xbone exclusive but thats beside the point.

Others hate shooters for 'lack of verticality' but fell in love with titanfall 2 for its parqour shootbangs.

Sometimes it only takes a bit of a change to interest you in something. Personally i think i find battle royale games dull because its just one life free for all deathmatch and guns make that kind of bland.

I think the only way that genre could interest me was if they made a survival horroresque battle royale. No guns, poor visibility, high density terrain with few open areas and almost entirely melee weapons.

Something in the style of Forbidden Siren 2 which never came out in the US but was a atmophsere so rich you could cut it with a knife and that kind of look and art style with 100 people on some spooky japanese concrete city style island having to survive seems like a neat idea. Like maybe 1 of every 10 who die become a monster thats not too OP but doesnt need a weapon and hunts other players with a goal of escape.

Theres some like Hide or Die trying it but they mostly seem like a case of "i could just play dead by daylight and not deal with the beta meme all over again" but still the idea of a horror battle royale inspired by the movie/manga that coined the term might be the thing that gets my interest in it.

What twists do existing genres you don't care for do you think could sell you on jumping into a game?

and why would developers never make it because its too niche?

More like publishers aren't apt to fund it. Familiarity tends to be what sells easiest unless the work receives really high marketing/reviews. And if it should sell well, you can bet that the formula will be distilled to appeal to even more people because at that point it's much more an attempt at profit than just an idea the developers had.

I would make a Battle Royale that is more or less inspired in the book/manga/movie, that is, characters will get a random item at the beginning which doesn't guarantee any kills, and then we go from there.

I've always liked Undertale's turn based take on bullet hell games, even if it was very basic. Maybe have it be a 2 person versus style, where you attack each other for a certain amount of time. You get to select different attack types to try and outsmart the other guy.

Also tactical/squad based shooters all feel stale to me because it's always the same modern operators style. I kinda want a tactical FPS where you use magic rather than guns and command either undead minions that you raise or other fellow wizards. Not really sure how that would work though.

Open world game, but it's mainly a dating sim

In Skyrim and Fallout 4, I really liked the idea of having a romantic partner that is also your follower. You can explore the open world with your loving waifu tagging along beside you. Such as how you can romance Aela in Skyrim, or Curie in Fallout 4, and they can also accompany you as follower npcs as you visit various places.

My only problem is that open world games usually focus on combat and killing, but put the romantic stuff in as an afterthought. Like if you visit a beach, you're most likely gonna be there to 1) fight enemies or 2) go fishing. There won't be an option to, say, just take your waifu follower npc there to engage in some fun beach activities to build your relationship. No volleyball minigame, no building sandcastles with her, no surfing together, or other bonding moments like that.

You also wouldn't be able to take her to snowy mountain and simply have snowball fights with her or go snowboarding together. Romantic stuff like that is usually absent in these combat-driven open world games.

I mean, some visual novels are ok and all. But their gameplay is just clicking through menus and is honestly boring. It'll be cool to have a waifu follower in a 3D open world game. Being able hold her hands like Ico's Yorda and go sightseeing the world and activating fun minigames at various locations. Maybe with photography and taking pictures along the way. The games that really inspired me to write this post were 1) Skyrim and 2) Twilight Princess. There is a small fishing section in Twilight Princess where you can hang out with one of the game's more fleshed out characters, Hena. She can chat with you about various subjects in her cabin as you get to know her better. And she can also accompany you as you go out fishing together, instead of going fishing by your lonesome.

This is what I mean by fun activities. It'll be nice to play a 3D open world game with waifu followers npcs, but with dating sim aspects that are actually fleshed out and fun. There doesn't need to be any combat or killing whatsoever. It could be an Animal Crossing or Harvest Moon slice-of-life world where you just visit various locations with her and do fun things together.

i had a similar idea but for a Resident Evil BR. it's like Outbreak, fixed camera angles. different characters with different strengths and weaknesses. essentially there's a single cure for the virus somewhere on the map and you compete with other players for it. but there are plenty of zombies and other mutated creatures around, so it becomes this interesting interplay of scavenging and occasional cooperation.

not only do you have to worry about conserving ammo for dealing with the monsters but you also have to contend with other players. do you shoot that other player to soften them up in hopes they die? or just ignore them to conserve ammo for your next zombie encounter? a firefight could drain you of resources and leave you too weak to deal with enemies, and probably would draw the attention of nearby monsters.

other elements of pvp would be a player blowing up a barrel near you, zooming by you with a hoard of monsters following them and shooting you to slow you down, shit like that. on the inverse you could have situations where you're forced to cooperate. a trap springs, zombies fall from the ceiling, you're trapped in a room with another player. or maybe just as you're considering whether or not to draw on them fucking Nemesis bursts through a wall.

Sounds interesting, but the problem with the type of game where you interact with NPCs is often they don't feel like real people. It's only natural, since we don't have advanced AI, they can only repeat limited dialog and limited animations.
