I'm not against them, in fact I'm probably going to build in support for it next time I update ffmpeg. Just amused by that statement. At least it's a marked improvement with compression though like VP9 is to the much faster H.264.
Point of interest by the way, VP9 actually has support for higher bit depths (10 and 12) but I don't think it's ready for actual use yet since you need to explicitly enable it when compiling libvpx/vpxenc and it requires –profile=2 (worse result). Such videos can be posted here (10-bit H.264 can too) but support for it is very iffy. The things I've seen that play 10-bit and 12-bit VP9 are mpv and Chromium. VLC can play them too but has funky colours with OpenGL video output. Firefox can't play 12-bit. Only thing on phone that supports them is mpv. VLC and browser can't even deal with some pixel formats.

For me quality-wise was a crapshoot. Sometimes there was no visual difference and other times -best looked much better or worse than -good. And there's two main filters to change the framerate. fps filter copies and drops frames to reach the target fps. Framerate filter, not to be confused with the -framerate options you mentioned, interpolates frames instead to reach the target fps.

The reason to spotlight VBR is because it's a lot more predictable, and also not usually wasteful if you overspecify the bitrate. CRF isn't you just have to "feel" based on the video in question and continuously monitor the output to make sure it won't overshoot or drastically undershoot or look like shit. However video encoding is no one-size-fits-all. I found that if you are encoding for very tight filesize, sometimes CRF produces much better results than VBR, and also 10-bit H.264 with animation tune was less artifacting of the third WebM (it's SFW) than any of my VP9 tests with 8 10 and 12-bit colour depth. That was only with the medium profile too for libx264.
