I think the most i've ever spent on any form of microtransactions was about £20 on platinum in Warframe after putting 200 hours in and going "yeah this was worth 20 quid" as a way to support the devs and get a couple of new warframes to have some very different playstyles. But thats about it.

The concept of spending hundreds if not thousands on any online game seems crazy since we all know those servers ain't going to be up forever. But i remember when GW2 launched and a dev said they had about 20 whales dropping $1000 a month, every month on the gem store and that near quarter of a million dollars a year from 20 people was almost keeping the game afloat by themselves. Which followed with games like WoW ramping up their cash shop 'minibuys' smelling that corpulent whale money ripe for the farming.

But do you know any of these whales? we hear about them but i dont know a soul that see's them as anything but scams. At the worst i know some goys that bought Overwatch loot boxes but thats about it. Spending hundreds or even thousands in some online game happens, i just don't know anyone who does it including the most mainstream casual people i know from college or work or whatever. Though to be fair that may be skewed by not knowing anyone into stuff like Scam Yiddizen.

Do know any legit whales? how do they rationalise that shit?

Every single pre-order is a whale of sorts, not smart consumer habits. At the extremes it is fanatics who have swapped their loneliness or vapidness for an identity they see as giving them a chance at something of value, and they will throw money keeping after it. There are also very wealthy kids that don't understand the value of money because it grows on trees for them. Like gambling, it is a trap for a specific flawed typed of being.

I have a friend who spends way too much on lootboxes, mostly CSGO items. The flipside is that he sells a lot of shit on the marketplace and through paypal. He always brags about the one time he sold a knife to somebody for over $200, but I know for a fact that he has lost far more than he has won.

He's employed full time, works terrible hours and gets super defensive whenever you bring up how much he's spent. His go-to line is "It's my money and I'll do whatever I want with it!", I guess it's not much worse than the rest of my social group; every time they manage to cajole me into going out with them they just sit in front of the poker machines for hours on end.

Ever since they started unvaulting cosmetic packs in warframe, I think I must have spent 50~60 on them. The price they ask for prime packs is egregious, so I don't buy them at launch, nor did I buy them in unvaulting deals that had prices marginally better, but still unfairly expensive (and reduntant, since they included the prime frames and weapons I already had). But selling old cosmetics only is fine by me.

I think I know two, but they vehemently deny it. If you look at the games they're constantly playing, though - they're both almost exclusively extremely lootbox/cash-shop heavy games. One leans towards free-to-play MMOs, and the other plays looter-shooters/mmo shooters. Neither one of them plays even a fraction of the breadth and variety of games they used to. And while I can't say for certain that the guy I know who plays a ton of f2p MMOs spends real money on the games - the other guy who plays looter-shooters used to constantly bug me to try to get me to spend money on Mass Effect 3 lootboxes so that I could "keep up" with him and his friends.

I bought exactly one ME3 lootbox with a few bucks I had left over after the purchase of an actual game, and it gave me fuck-all. I told him it was a bullshit scam, and we really haven't really played too many games together since then.

Well if you're gonna say that buying cards in a card game is P2W, then frankly every card game is P2W to some extent, just through the simple truth that the more money you drop on a TCG, the more cards you'll have access to and the greater variety of strategies you'll be able to employ. The problem with Hearthstone is you're unable to trade away or sell the cards you don't want/have dupes of, you can only scrap them for a measly amount of dust to craft the cards you do want, at a rate of roughly 5-10 cards scrapped to craft one of equal rarity.

The adventures were actually a better deal than the regular expansion sets. For $20-25, you'd get a smaller, but guaranteed set of cards, including several legendaries, just for completing some fairly simple AI battles (and if you couldn't figure them out, you could just copy one of a hundred strategies posted online). Compare that to a new expansion bundle, where you'd drop $50 for probably a bunch of junk cards and maybe a couple decent ones. Odds were good that whatever meta decks came out of it, the average player wouldn't be able to build them due to poor luck, so they'd either have to buy more packs to keep up or surrender themselves to remaining at the lower ranks. Naturally, this is why Blizzard stopped doing adventures, because they were one-and-done purchases that were cheaper than going back to the shop and emptying your wallet for more packs. The only positive is that the AI battles that release with new expansions are now free, but several are entirely RNG-based and will often fuck you over at the last minute.

As to why it got popular, it's a simple-to-understand card game with flashy lights and Warcraft branding. That's really all there is to it.

I personally don't know of any whales. I've seen plenty of them online though and in various games. Tcgs survive on whales. People in this thread think people that spend hundreds on a single game are whales, but that isn't even close to being a whale. Tcg tards spend thousands on boxes and cases of cards, which are several boxes. Keep in mind that a box of mtg usually runs around $90 when it first releases and they can go over $200 depending on the set. The special masters sets start over $200 and can easily go over $300. People here have no idea how bad things can get. Also keep in mind mtg is ramping up with arena and is going to get into the mobile market soon. Shit is going to be unreal.

There was a guy who claimed being a Moderator/community manager of some European MMO.

He mentioned a Saudi arabian guy (in his 20s) that spend around $3000 to $4000 per month on said game (never knew which game it was)

He also claimed that devs and higher ups kept an eye on the guy chatlogs to see what he like/wanted to spend money on (like, the guy mentioned he liked some sort of bike, and the devs would introduce some mount that looked like it on the game shop ) Also when they found out teh dude liked some S.Arabia soccer team they put some costumes and weapon skins that had the same colors of that soccer team.

I played a shitty Chinese kung fu MMO for a few years. Whales were disgustingly common, I know of at least four players on my server who for sure spent $50k+ and a dozen more that probably did. They rationalized it by being bugpeople from Asian cultures where more money = better than, and the game encouraged it at every turn with endless grinding PvP. Like someone would get ganked by a whale and their sycophants for a week or two and one day you'd see them in scene chat bragging about how they were going to spend thousands of dollars on the game and they'd be the strongest.

Could have been a fun game but it ended up as a Stanford prison experiment where everyone paid money to participate.

My uncle's obese sjw feminist hambeast 35 y/o video game obsessed girlfriend is a literal incarnation of a Whale. She is a heartless bitch only staying with my uncle till my grandparents pass away because she thinks she will inherit their house. My uncle is an idiot and too dense to see that she is using him. She is obsessed with Team Fortress 2, Bethshit titles, Pokemon and pretty much anything Nintendo. Massive drone of these franchises, cannot take the slightest of criticism without getting personal and threatening death upon someone and likely suffers from bad autism. Video games are her life. She has bragged about spending over $50k on skins, unusual hats and other virtual cosmetics and has an absolute unhealthy batshit insane amount of video game merch and consoles as well. She is quite wealthy and hates sharing. She takes massive advantage of people including my poor dense grandparents. Just mentioning anything to do with League of Legends or DOTA sends her into a massive spergfit. For some reason, she despises ASSFAGGOTS more than anything.

Obviously, the two live in my grandparents house together. Their room is 90% all of her shit. I am not making that up. It's a massive room too, about the size of a medium apartment. She is clearly the dominant one in the relationship and my uncle is a fucking pussy and thinks he won't be able to get another girl. Trust me, he looks pretty good and is buff and chad-like whereas she is literally a fat colored hair sjw dumblrina landwhale. God, I remember when he was single. He buys everything, even Fallout 76. He bought the WoW expansion despite knowing he'd hate it. It's weird, because he doesn't pre-order games. It's like he wants to make sure he won't make a mistake, recognizes that it's a mistake, and then dumps the money in it. This faggot rationalizes it by saying he makes too much money to care. "Too much money to care" is apparently about ~$70,000 for him.

If microtransactions were only cosmetic, stayed true to the in-game art style and not the memey neon particle effect explosions a la GW2 and didn't vastly outclass or replace the addition of cosmetics added through playing the game, it would be perfect.
