All-around helpless and bleak situations in vidya. I'm not necessarily talking about you being backed into a corner with enemies surrounding you and your ammo running out, I am also talking about more abstract moments where you really feel like you can't do anything - and not simply because of a lack of foresight by the devs but because it's intentionally done to make you feel like shit.

First pic related especially. Conspiracies which make you feel helpless are the best conspiracies.

There's a campaign in Mechwarrior 2 Mercenaries where the last mission, Fox Hunt, requires you to race to a dropship before it leaves you stranded on planet. The best way to make you feel hopeless is a series of unfortunate events in rapid succession.

>mission starts

>ok I have five minutes to cross several km of terrain, that's doable

>oh a bridge guarded by two Mechs barrelling straight across, whatever just alpha these fuckers can't afford to lose time

>alright good news and bad, the good news is both Mechs are dead, the bad news is it's because the bridge collapsed under their collective weight and my firepower

>yeah guys I'll uh, camp out or something you can just come back later

Also the one which is a fraud contract set up by pirates that ambush you got me pretty good.

The beginning of Homeworld. The rest of the game is a rage-fueled quest to capture every single vessel in the galaxy on your way back home. Alas, you cannot take over the junkyard dog, only hamper its targeting and movement. Taking over the multi-beam frigates was capital HILARIOUS, as well as capturing enemy destroyers. Capture Frigates are the real hero.

I did that too, but the problem was that the game didn't acknowledge what you did in any way. There were no newspaper articles about the gnome-killer, or any dialogue with NPCs who remarked on it.

The next best thing was to kill both Bates and Appleby (the rival steam engine manufacturers) and making Cumbria rise again, so you could see how Tarant was fucked up in the epilogue. Alternatively, you could have free the Bane of Kree from the Void and he'd devastated entire cities in Arcanum - or just team up with Kerghan and wipe out all life, which we might as well do at this point.

Good game.

In Rimworld, while most of my useful colonists were away on a field mission, the base was attacked by a sudden mad boomalope. For those who don't know, a boomalope explodes upon death. The boomalope just happened to be standing in my farm fields at the time, where he then ran up to my lone field worker. Boom, fire everywhere! Normally, this wouldn't be such a big deal, except…of the three colonists I had manning the base, zero of them were capable of firefighting.

I watched as the fire burned it's way through the farm fields first, then migrated to the food stockpile, and had basically removed all wooden structures from the colony by the time the main colonists arrived back at the colony. There was no food left, and Winter was only seven days away.

Danganronpa was indeed a ride between helplessness and hope. It felt great.

Other than that, Dark Souls makes you feel pretty hopeless once you get out of the asylum and it's a down spiral since then.

>Crestfallen warrior tells you it's hopeless

>Everything is considerably stronger and better than you

>All NPCs are either stupid, naive or driven insane

>Most of them ultimately go hollow

>The world is fucked beyond repair

>Every action you do just kills the world a little bit

>Spending time in firelink shrine is way more depressing than most other areas

>In the end, no matter what your choice is, the world is doomed

>Either to keep being a rotting carcass or to literally just end

Then you have side-stories like Solaire. No matter what you do, it's a sad story, either if he goes insane or if his spirit is broken because he will never find his sun. Then there's shit like the painted world which is essentially a prison, Quelag's sister, Quelana of Izalith, and how all Gods are either dead, dying, corrupted or an straight up lie. Hell, even in the DLC, the whole story with Artorias is makes you feel as it doesn't really matter what you did, for example, if you found Sif, you KNOW you have to kill him later, if you already didn't.

Every action you make is kind of pointless, it brings things to an end, but not a pretty one, because no matter what you do, everything is screwed and there's nothing you can do. That's true hopelessness.

Fuck Darksouls 2, though, it feels way too much like a generic fairy tale than a genuine story of hopelessness and struggle.

>they then send 80+ of these monsters in and reveal they can detonate stars

Most of it isn't actually obtuse. The thing is, you aren't supposed to get the last ending on a first playthrough, maybe not even a second. Cave Story is a game you're expected to replay, again and again, to find the extra secrets and try out the different weapons you can get. Getting to the final area and ending is something you're supposed to only be able to do after piecing together the puzzle of it from multiple playthroughs. You're not going to find the tow rope the first time you play the game, but you might go down to that area on the second time and find it. You'll go down and talk to the dying Booster the first time, but then you'll read his journal near the end of the game, and then possibly notice the weird red mark on the ground during your second go.

dfb969  No.16007112

When I played Dwarf Fortress, I didn't bother to read the wiki. I stumbled around and figured out a lot of it myself (learning how workshops worked was a huge achievement, for example) and over the course of maybe five forts finally got an understanding. It was my sixtgh fortress that became the sort of self-sustaining fort that could tolerate anything from anything, built to nullify pretty much any megabeast and repel any assault.

Unfortunately, my closed-off nature of playing lead to me making a single massive mine shaft, with little defense. I had a massive army - half my massive fort was properly trained due to cycling shifts - and very good weapons. Iron armor and steel arms. That's when I struck adamantium. I dug hard and greedily, and in time figured out how to refine the stuff and all my officers had adamantine helms and swords (Signs of office, regardless of weapon proficiency) and I even started in on golden wall fixtures. It didn't take long to break into "the circus".

The demons were initially not much of a problem. My powerfully armed officers and well-trained rank and file were able to dispatch a few with no problem. But the numbers were so overwhelming they blew a hole in my ranks sooner rather than later. Hasty fortifications and shitty walls were circumvented, proven pointless, or destroyed. I watched humble workmen and artisans fighting to save themselves - pointlessly. The smithy killed a demon, then was decapitated only a moment later by the one behind it. Even the children and the babes fought to the last. I watched every last resident die, the fort covered in their blood. All 20 z-levels of housing, manufacture, storage, meeting rooms and halls, training rooms, the demons boiled all the way up to the trading post and destroyed even the visiting dwarves from the Mountainhomes.

One day I'll arm a force enough to reclaim that fort. But now it stands only as a testament of lessons learned.

The last time I poked into the circus I had a measly 12 demons trickle in then the flow stopped completely, left me pretty saddened

No one's left.

Everything is gone.

Kharak is burning…

The Scaffold and all orbital facilities have been destroyed. Receiving no communications from anywhere in the system, not even beacons.

Wait, on the maintenance frequency, I'm getting a signal from the cryo-tray systems in orbit. The cryo-trays are under attack, defend them!

This, second game is one of the best mystery games I've ever played, first game is good too but the cases are a bit simple. Whereas the second game is a fulfillment or foil to the first, the third is an inversion of the first.

The first one was weak on a case level, but strong as an overall narrative, where the third one had stronger, more complex cases, but lacked the same narrative strength of the original.

Only SDR2 has had both, and it's also an homage to gaming in general, so I'd say 2 > 1 = V3, but V3 definitely leaves a worse impression on people because of its incredibly destructive ending.

It was more a playable ending cutscene where your character (Noble Six) makes a final stand against overwhelming odds it's not winnable your character is beaten to death by a group of Elites and is promptly forgotten due to the "no spartan is ever KIA, just MIA" order

298b48  No.16007951

R-Type's a weird meta example. If you play them in order of release you start out feeling exited because the music kicks ass and so does the game but by the end of Final you're either perplexed over what the fuck's even going on or are in a somber mood thanks to the game's atmosphere. Then you remember Irem shut down and then you get sad.

Most of my challenge runs in C:DDA, although rougelikes hardly count I suppose.

While many may argue it doesn't count as vidya, quite a few VN's have this, prominently S;G and C;H, although the ending to World End economica and the intro to the sequel legit was legit fucked, the plucky light of children being crushed by jews and the soulless banking/market system with the few remaining characters living in abject poverty and resulting to alcoholism and dead end government jobs to recover from the fallout of lying/conspiring jews taking everything from you including your waifu

The whole concept of the zoomer meme is just confusing and unfunny. Take Wojack's face make him young and then put in some new shit that kids like, like fortnite and whatever trend is big and that's the joke. "Haha yeah young people amiright?" Just a way for 20 something year olds to feel different and cooler then kids a few years younger

298b48  No.16008383

It also doesn't make sense in accordance to wojack's characterization or, if it's supposed to be a younger incarnation, the timeline of his existence. For comparison's sake soyjack is actually something a real life wojack could end up being so it at least makes some kind of sense.

I've played Black and White. Trust me it's not really that good once you get over the rage of trying to be a good pet owner. Turning into an evil god is all but inevitable but it's trying to raise your pet properly that's truly frustrating.

Why is it that Black & White just sort of fizzled, with no third sequel or copycats of any kind? Or many god games at all for that matter? First entry was a little spare with a weird gameplay cycle and dumb, non-self sufficient villagers you have to babysit the entire ecosystem of so they don't kill the trees and starve to death, but they did attempt to build scaffolds for themselves occasionally, so the foundation was there. The creature had a pretty indepth brain that I don't think anyone has ever mapped out. There were a lot of miracles even if you didn't necessarily have a use for them all. Megablasts were neat if superfluously destructive, for example. But it was an award winner with half a million sales.

Then 2 comes along and it's rushed, with some cut content (there was supposed to be a Greek prophet character and semi-animatic cutscenes before each level, I remember that much from an early interview, plus scalable wall height & thickness) and if I remember right money trouble at Lionhead as they juggle too many projects at once with dick speculators sticking their noses in, admittedly to protect their investments. Still sells at least 100,000 in the UK alone and gets positive reviews. You get a nu-Total War combat deal with army units pairing off to duel in a big furball with two whole unit types (plus catapults) and a simplified creature, with less varieties, who you can pet or slap on any learned subject at any time. The miracles have neat throw/pour variations, but there's only six, the attack miracles are all redundant, and they should have been more versatile. There's an expansion pack with a death god. It's okay, I guess. Never finished it.

Then, nothing. They had places to improve and the directions were obvious. Refine and optimize the engine just a little bit, it was pretty nice looking for when it came out in 2005 as long as you don't zoom in on the people. Make the creature a little more complex, without the ability to perform personality surgery, while not leaving it quite as impenetrable or at least opaque as in 1. Make some better army combat. Maybe advance the time period to the late classical/early medieval, possibly pastiched with high medieval gunpowder elements, sort of keyholing with what they did with Fable 2 in 2008. Don't have a handful of cultures, creatures, units and missions compared to 1. Don't inexplicably remove multiplayer support.

And don't make things quite as binary as 'good nice simcity man' and 'evil toto wa pig' on the morality axis, code in a little alignment clemency for defensive reprisal after an attack or within a certain distance of your influence ring for example, maybe have policy settings or post-conquest buttons for how invasions and occupations are handled. Violent suppression? Kill everybody to open the settlement for colonization? Soft or hard proselytization? Shipment of relief resources from your main influence ring to the contested area, or any interaction at all between settlements for that matter? Something like that.

Under such a system, you can go full divine Genghis Khan and brutalize everyone that resists your will to get things over with quick and try to roll over settlement after settlement. You can starve and brutalize everyone indiscriminately, even your own villagers, to get lodse mana, passive army XP & evil points at the direct cost of population and resulting indirect damage to economic reliability. You can give not a shit as soon as resistance ceases and tithes are paid, expanding your home city while crash fortifying the new frontier before advancing again as a neutralish empire builder. You can restrain yourself and wage only justified war at some pains to stay good and to game the counterattack stat buffs to your largely intact armies fresh from the homefront, now on crusade. You can build mega-tall and never fire even one shot in anger (outside your influence) and accept the great unwashed migrant masses to your impenetrable Babylon megacity, if you really like the B&W2 Simcity cycle, or a less shitty version. And all the possibilities inbetween. Anything so you don't have to exclusively build (agonizingly slowly) in your initial overcrowded and far too slow to expand influence ring to be efficiently 'good,' or have big town center circle-dancing capture powwows in skeletal enemy settlements to be 'evil.' And be slow & indecisive between conquests to be 'neutral.'

This technically counts as a hopeless vidya moment, right? It's just wrong that Molyneux and company ditched the IP entirely after failing to bring it to its full potential both times, and then he goes and botches Fable, then makes a mediocre Populous retread. It doesn't make sense and it's all such a waste. I wonder if he'd answer fanmail on the subject, assuming he hasn't drunk himself to death at that little indie company.
