So, we had MOBAS (LoL, Dota 2, Heroes of Newerth or whatever it was called; Heroes of the Storm), TCGs (Heartstone, Gwent, Artifact), Battle Royale games/game modes, and pseudo-retro platformers.
What do you think will be the next big train everyone and their mom will jump on?
Will it be F2P with a cash shop again?
A return of the Telltale "episodic" system?
More emphasis on E-sports, complete with sports bets, pay-per-view and perhaps even actually sports video games (MUH FIFA/MADDEN) coming to the esports sector?
Or something subscription-based (i.e. rent-a-game)?
The way I see it, the big publishers, or rather, the big shareholders, want a steady, reliable source of profit (hence Assassin's Creed and Cawabooty being shat out on a planned schedule at this this point), so classical models where you pay some devs for a game and maybe some Xpacs probably don't seem appealing to them.
Moreover, you want maximal output for minimal input, so TCGs and DLC content that bring in several magnitudes of their modest production costs must look like a gold mine to them.
So - what will it be? Or will a merciful god bring the great Vidya crash upon us already.

Right now it’s a toss between retro style FPS games with dark aesthetics and gore or WW2 shooters. A bazillion of both are being made.
If Halo is a success we will see many studios follow and a revival of the sci-fi FPS probably with open world elements. We’ll also see a resurgence in hack and slash RPGs.

Next big fad is either going to be a "true" VRMMORPG, or, more likely, we hit the perceived "Golden Age" of the anti-game. Games that try and defy being a conventional game.
Basically Undertale, DDLC, Stanley Parable type "Metagames" combined with VR Simulator games, and a bunch of other genres like Rage Simulators will see a new boom in popularity as Triple A titles slowly lose traction. Everything will be IndieShit for a while, with the only remotely decent games being sequels or from Japan.

I have a feeling that we're going back to modern military or near future shooters, seeing as COD WW2 is regarded as a trashfire and Battleflop V sold worse than Battlefield Hardline. The Battlefield crowd constantly cries about wanting another Battlefield 3 clone, and the COD crowd wants to go back to MW2/BLOPS2. Then add turbojewry ontop of that, and a huge focus towards the chinese market. The only other thing I could think of is a huge burst of fantasy "RPGs" as soon as The Todd Scrolls VI comes out.
