Those referred to as NPCs have fear responses, and don't question orders from their (((masters))). They didn't even have to be engineered to do this. Maybe truth is stranger than fiction?

They're just clones with pre-programmed emotional responses to appear human to their masters. They don't think for themselves.

Wait I just realized, the Replica ingame seem actually quite intelligent for a video game antagonists, yet they are still scripted so I guess I answered my question there.

Still, if that is the case, why would ARMA even give them human responses if they serve only to alert the enemy of their strategy, and generally fuck them over? Isn't it more important for them to be effective rather than to be seen human?

Or is that so that the military can pretend that they are human soldiers so that the word of the Project Perseus doesn't get out?

Because it's a videogame and videogame enemies need some sort of telegraphing for their behavior, otherwise you have some dude throwing a frag at you in the middle of a firefight and you don't see it coming until you get blown up.

It's definitely quicker and more reliable than a radio is, an order can immediately get to the lowest member of military hierarchy without any need of relaying it.

The retconned FEAR 1 expansions stated that they were clones of Paxton Fetel, the sequels doesn't mention their origin.

I always assumed so, otherwise how come Paxton doesn't simply brain control you as soon as he knows you're onto him.

Probably they weren't meant to face other psychics on the level of Paxton.

As for why they talk to each other, maybe Paxton only controls the unconscious mind the part that makes the instinctive choices the conscious mind explains and incorporates to the self narrative. Studies have already shown we make most of our choices way before we notice we do. Maybe Paxton controls the part that makes the decisions but the soldiers still think they came up with their choices and thus communicates as if his teammates didn't have the same thoughts.

They did try that. They're Paxton Fetel and Pointman. Didn't work out for them.

I think I have something more to add to this discussion. In the expansion Extraction Point the Replicas appear shocked to see Alma's monsters and start screaming terrified things like "WHAT THE FUCK IS THIS?" and "SHOOT IT, SHOOT IT". I think it is impossible for those reactions to be programmed seeing that they had no way of seeing Alma's monsters before she was freed, so it hints on them having some sort of sentience.

I thought the soldiers were being mind controlled but seeing Alma scared them so much they broke from the mind control and started shitting their pants

They barely managed to keep Alma and Paxton contained, and when their best efforts at containment failed it took the superhuman efforts of a third to make them stop. Now imagine if the Point Man had been aware he was chasing after his brother and mother from the get go. Who else could have stopped them?

Who knows if Point Man wouldn't still go for it anyways, seeing how dangerous both of them are. And well, freeing Alma doesn't stop Point Man from helping F.E.A.R, though you could say that he's just fighting to survive by then.

It's obvious they are not automatons, but fully capable of adapting to evolving combat situations and responding accordingly. I assume the control that Paxton exerts over them is somewhat more subtle, likely giving them orders they can't obey.

Also, having survival instincts is advantageous, though I imagine they can be easily order to stand and fight to the last, or go on a suicide charge, if circumstances demand it.

Fettel and Pointman are Alma's children. The original project was to create psionic supersoldiers that could control cloned supersoldiers and it failed horribly.
