It's very much strives to be a dungeon crawler from the 90's like the old Wizardry games (development started in the 90's so that's kind of an inevitable holdover), and that shows itself through the lack of handholding and general opaque presentation of its mechanics (there's still no manual for one). There are some modern conveniences like an automap, and a journal for keeping track of quests, though overall it's still rather hard to get into. Combat is quite interesting because random shit you pick up over the course of the game can have some use in combat. A regular stone can knock enemies unconscious, and there's a whole heap of musical instruments which can inflict all kinds of (de)buffs or other random effects. Combat is turn-based where both player and enemy parties attack at the same time, so there's a lot of planning involved so that your warrior doesn't accidentally end up waking up a monster by hitting it on the head your bard just put to sleep and so certain enemies can remain stunned long enough to prevent them from firing off AoE attacks on their own. Boss fights are more like puzzle encounters where party composition matters, as you fight bosses whose attacks can reach to your back row, and so on.
The exploration is perhaps the most fun part. You basically have to figure out where to go next through clues, and you're given complete freedom where you want to go provided you know how to deal with the obstacles. There's even a lot of inventory-based puzzles which involve using items at crucial spots so you can progress. The game is nice enough to mark them as CRITICAL so you don't accidentally drop key items and get stuck, though you can disable that option if you want. There's a fuckton of secret passages and doors which require careful exploration to discover, though you can also cast a very mana-expensive spell which needs to be cast at the highest power level to be of any use. A lot of dungeons are interconnected, so you might find yourself getting sidetracked in an entirely new dungeon you didn't mean to go to in the first place at all. You can interact with many NPCs for quests, clues, or bartering for items, and talking is done through entering keywords. There also exists a Mind Read spell which lets you see all keywords an NPC will respond to.
There's a lot to talk about, but the game really is fucking loaded with content. The claim on the store page that it features 600 hours of content is a major exaggeration and a falsehood, a single playthrough will merely take about 150-200 hours.

Playing it now. Enough time has passed since I played the first 20 or so hours on 1.x that I only vaguely remember stuff and it feels great discovering secrets again.
Compared to 1.x, it seems easier at least in some places. I steamrolled the Green Hand Gang first try whereas it took me like 2+ hours worth of tries back then. Can't remember if I used the same tactics. I think they were mostly immune to status effects back then which is why I had a difficult time but now stuff like Insect Swarm and Blinding Flash works well on them.
Enchanting weapons seems overpowered. There's a new shrine close to the start (Shrine of the Raptor start) where a cleric can enchant weapons. Applied it to an axe I found in one of the first chests you can find and my metalsmith is kicking tremendous ass with it. I don't know if there's supposed to be a limit to it but the enchantment seems to last forever.
I think there might be a couple new enemy types at the starting area, and new (unfortunately, ill-fitting) artwork for some old enemies.
The game is still using the same dinosaur engine from the 90s so it's still wonky technically with issues with resolution/scaling, having to restart to switch between fullscreen and windowed mode, can't use alt-tab with fullscreen mode, etc. But the dungeon crawling is too good to let that deter me from playing the game.
The various gameplay elements and usage of the UI is kinda vague, so for those who haven't tried the game yet, I suggest waiting for the manual otherwise you might just get frustrated trying to figure out how shit works.

I bought this the day it came out. It's fucking hard as hell unless you savescum. Everything else you can do in the game that will seemingly make it much easier will bite you in the ass later.
It sort of forces you to plan as much as possible and do things the hard way.
Also are the NPCs competing against the player for items yet?
I remember hearing cleve was going to implement a system that was similar to the original design of the first STALKER game where there were NPCs travelling around the map completing missions and stuff.

On the first glance no, it is a Wizardry inspired game. However when you delve deeper into it you realise it has more to do with Might and Magic than you would think. Exploration, puzzles, open world are there. It is only that combat has more in common with Wizardry, however at one point of the game combat stops being a focus and exploring the world becomes more prevalent.
