What are some good games to escape the harsh realities of life? Especially, to escape from a fucked-up family this Christmas.

X3:Terran Conflict is good.
Complicated enough to need your brain, and gives you great satisfaction as you slowly become the happiest merchant in all of space.

I used to think the same thing about it but persona 4 actually has some real deep philosophical stuff in it about humans and shadows and how they are connected
It’s also one of the most anti-gay pieces of media I’ve ever consumed
But none of that has any bearing on whether it is a comfy escapist experience or not

All of that was present in the earlier games. They just chose not to drive the point home with a fucking sledgehammer.

Octopath Traveler is pretty escapist. I found myself swept up in it as soon as the prologue finished.
Some chapters have fairly wholesome and supportive families, though, so if you'd rather not hear about those then consider something else.

Everyone should have a good family relationship. Some families are too fucked up for that, though. Unless OP decides to blog, I'm going to assume it's the latter
Also Snake Pass is distracting and super comfy

I know that, but most memes that are generated from some other source like a book or movie are mocking it. American psycho is a genuinely good watch and read.

Pick an RPG and go wild. Or play a series from beginning to end if they're not a genre you enjoy.
Elder Scroll games
Armored Core series
Front Mission series
Kings Field 1-4
Shadow Tower 1+2
Baldurs Gate/Icewind Dale
Any dungeon crawler (Wizardry, Elminage, Class of Heroes)
Monster Hunter
Ratchet and Clank games
There's enough good games out there to last a lifetime or two.

Sometimes people invite others along for the sole purpose of being an ass to them.
Nothing wrong making distance to toxic people in your life, they'll just bring you down and whatever if theyre family. That's just some more leverage for them to abuse you.

How do I mod Oblivion to not be such a horrible experience? Is there a way to disable the horrible bloom or HDR or whatever it is called? I've been sort of wanting to replay it after many, many years but it just looks so horrible. Why did games in that era decide that horrible bloom was a great idea?

A bit late to the party, but I was in a similiar boat. For pure escapism, I used Final Fantasy games, one to eight. There are PC versions of seven and eight but for the rest use an emulator. Avoid the remakes. I heard Chrono Trigger was good but I missed that one. Civilization 3 and Mount & Blade: Warband are great time eaters.
