What games make your character feel very light and Athletic? Preferably games that focus on movement itself rather than combat, so less spectacle fighters and more 2D and 3D platformers.

An obvious choice is Mario as he has a set of different athletic movements that allow the player to cleverly traverse the levels. Hat Kid from A Hat in Time also felt very athletic and easy to control, making it feel as every single move I made was very light and jumpy. Rayman is another good example despite the more combat-heavy focus of the third game.

Something to avoid in this case I'm not saying those are bad, just that they are not what I'm looking for right now are protagonists like of the classic Castlevania games, who feel really heavy, almost like very tanky warriors. Which is cool in his own right but not really the topic of this thread

ok this one is easy. Adventure games really made me feel light and since it's, 3D, the freedom of movement was really good, and it felt like mario 64. Other than that, when you start mastering the game, doing some well timed jumps and tricks, and avoiding obstacles with a long jumps, it feels so satisfying. Something close to that is that guy from N++, you can go really fast and protect your momentum when you time your jumps well. A Hat in Time has something like that, when do the jump attack thing and when you just touched the ground, if you time your jump well, she protects the momentum. Are there any other games where you can protect, or increase the momentum the more you jump?

Hollow Knight, aka Coffeine Flea Adventure Simulator.

Any input will reflect immediately within the absolute minimum of wind-up frames to make the action believable. Jumping and melee ranges are amazing. Zippy is the word that covers it best.

The NES Ninja Gaiden games, of course.

To add to this, all of the challenge of The Messenger comes from platforming rather than combat.

Yeah, started playing a couple of days ago. Great game, so far.

It is.

Until THAT part, for which it drops to a meh 4-5/10 until you get to new areas and it goes up again.

Also there's Guacamelee which has some excellent platforming which culminates in some of the best platforming in bonus challenges. 2 also has some great platforming, although it sadly relies more on memechicken which isn't as fun to platform with as the lucha. 2 also cranks the shitty jokes up to 11, instead of them being harmless posters they're now small contained maps(that you have to do if you want 100% completion) where your time is deliberetly wasted because whoever the shitty writers are really want to make fun of JRPGs or loot boxes or whatever, and there's an entire area dedicated to making fun of the people who had complained about the memes in the first game.

YouTube embed. Click thumbnail to play.

Very funny, OP.

The fast track to feeling athletic is to have a game completely built around that concept. Flash games aren't obligated to be fully 'fleshed out', so they're remarkably good for that, despite often having loose controls.

Good examples include Meat Boy and Super House of Dead Ninjas.

Actually now I realize that I do have a SNES emulator with a collection of ROMs downloaded, are there any good sidescrollers besides the obvious ones worth checking out?

I meant making fun of game concepts in games as whole. Comedy typically works as you're the observer not the participant as one of the participants is the butt of the joke. It's one of the reasons why jokes don't really work in video games, that and game devs are shitty writters.

Imma throw out some casual shit so watch out. I can't really remember how stylish you could get in the Titanfall 2 single player. I can only recall the tutorial level having some sort of platforming challenge. I also think Mirror's Edge had potential but then halfway through it decided to be a platform puzzler so it lost all it's free running excitement.

That's why the best video game humor is based on not mocking the themes of the video game but using them to either create a joke, or laughing at them lovingly like "This might be silly but it is what makes the whole thing charming".

Say what you will but Undertale was very decent at that, portraying puzzles in a funny fashion, but still as a part of the world and the game that made sense and were made in good fun. Making fun of handholdy tutorials but at the same time making us feel sympathy for the character representing them. It genereally did look like it was made by someone who really liked JRPGs and not someone who had their head up their ass and couldn't understand genre conventions. It's not the case of cringy, smug "HEH AREN'T THOSE JRPGs CHEESY AND STUPID" shit that we can find in most JRPG parodies.

Can't believe none of you have mentioned lara croft, even flat chested nu-lara is athletic as fuck.

dfb70a  No.15881270

>>15881163

OP meant that the controls feel fluid and maneuverable not characters looking athletic or climbing shit.

cfec45  No.15881323

Kat from Gravity Rush. Her movements feel like they have weight and inertia yet she's athletic and nimble, I love how when you jump from middle height and start running, she's recovering a bit starting in almost a crouching position to start speeding up.

2B from Nier Laundromata lacks the weight of movements, yet if you do an attack or stop to a halt, she does recover slowly to her default stance. I also like how she runs in different manners when she has different weapons, so when she carries a heavy axe she's balancing her body a bit.

Pitfall: the Mayan Adventure has some light, fast movement that's fairly detailed. The game is actually a bit fast at times, so it helps that the protagonist is fast as well. Jumping from a great height makes him struggle to recover a bit, or if you run from a bit of distance to a wall, he will smack against it and fall to the floor.

>Backwards

Nigger, you are confusing it with backwards long jumping. You are supposed to just partially submerge yourself in water, in a corner and push forward against both walls at the same time for twelve hours. Don't try it unless you can actually manage to keep your body tensed up and flexed for that exact period of time however, or you'll just phase into a fucking wall and get telefragged or leave the earth's atmosphere and get stranded in space. So get /fit/ before you try inter-dimensional travel at home.

Gravity Rush 2 was the only game from the past few years that felt like a genuine innovation in player movement.

c63d16  No.15881793

doom 2016 after you unlock double jump and improved air control. but yes there is certainly a focus on combat. its nothing groundbreaking but if you like jumping and shooting it might be fun. reminded me a little of metroid prime. that reminds me, i also really liked crisis and star wars jedi outcast (never got to play jedi knight) and alien vs predator for the movement afforded to the character.

I see, but then I run into the problem of finding two surfaces which can withstand the force of me accumulating momentum without gaining speed. Life's not a video game, you know, I don't think there's any place like this on earth.

Thanks for the input though.
