10 was definitely a flawed gem. It had so many good things going for it and many things where mechanics were met half way or just didn't make sense.
For example, the biggest flaw of archers is that they can't counter attack up close and they are still in range of other ranged weapons like hand axes or javelins. So why not give bows a range of 3 when archers promote to sniper and give snipers the ability to use knives when someone attacks them up close? They also made laguz weaknesses but give you no map where you can actually take advantage of it. The assassin class makes the silencer class irrelevant. The end game forcing you to take so many plot important characters was also a mistake. You can barely form your own team because of it.
Love the game still. The only thing it's truly missing is a FE7 ranking system.

To be devils advocate, i don't think what awakening did was casualization; its major gameplay things were bad maps(which didn't actually carry over to fates) and pair-up(which doesn't strike me as a way to make the game more casual, merely a gimmick).
Its other major problems(no weight and the my unit) came from its predecessor nu-mystery.
Considering Fates tried to bring weight back in a way and didn't actually retain awakenings basic as fuck maps i don't think its actually as bad as some think.

Its not just bad, its fucking horrible. Its one of the few games that made me fall asleep during a map and caused me to stop playing on my 3DS for months as a result of it just being so fucking god-awful. Sure Conquest had enough acceptable maps but if the context for playing through them is so shit and uncompelling, why should I bother with such a shit game to begin with? Everything just became about pair-up which did almost nothing but offer up free advantages, and its casual mode was a precursor to the ultimate babby Phoenix mode of Fates. Yes, it continued the trends of 12, but it was the major one to introduce this to the west since 12 never made its way over here, and unfortunately this had a very unfortunate effect on the fanbase. Plus at least 12 had better map design, which makes it inherently less dumbed down than Awakening; that game is so stripped that its just a battle of stats, abilities and pair-up/supports.
Fates is really fucking weird as a game, and overall I don't like it. Royals were too powerful and important because of that dragon vein gimmick, the weapon triangle they introduced was convoluted and unintuitive as all fuck, the contexts for the game are so fucking strange and all over the place that its hard to feel compelled to play it, and a lot of maps feel far too focused on gimmicks. Its not quite as much of a stompfest as Awakening, but I like the contexts even less than I did for Awakening; still though, comparing mediocre games to other mediocre games too often makes me unhappy.

Overall its gameplay for Conquest specifically is much more liked than Awakening, but that's not saying much since the gameplay was the worst part about Awakening. Its rated as pretty decent but only in terms of that. In my opinion, its mechanics were so fucking weird that I just didn't like it.
The gameplay for Birthright was worse than Awakening though, I would say, if you can believe it. The mobage elements it adds through My Castle crushes the soul far worse than the shit that Awakening did, which was real fucking bad but never quite that fucking depressing to see.
Nobody liked anything about Revelations, period. It is the worst of both worlds.
One thing that annoyed me was that a lot of units that weren't either royals or their retainers tended to be pretty weak and usually outclassed entirely by them in almost every way, its especially a shame in Rinkah's case.
