This is the first update ever that I am totally against from the very beginning. The crafting stuff is fine (and it's nice to have more variety of blocks any time) but these "invasions" are going to nothing more than a pain in the fucking ass. Will add nothing to the gameplay but making things more difficult, which is exactly what the invasions were in Terraria, too. At least with Terraria there was a chance to get rare weapons as drops from them, which are useful later. What are you going to get from these fuckers to justify their existence? Nothing because once you get diamond gear you're invincible to everything and can one-hit KO nearly every monster.

Minecraft died when Notch jumped ship and the Adventure Update turned out to be a major disappointment. It will be (and to an extent already is) the Dwarf Fortress of the 10s in the sense that a large devoted group of people will always be playing it, but it could have been so much more. It wasn't supposed to go this way at all.
The second biggest killer of this game was the near year-long wait between "Finished" 1.8 and 1.9. It created a mod bubble that essentially means most of the worthwhile mods are on that particular version.
Minestrappolation stopped being good mid way through the 3rd version. When they added all those stone types that basically made it incompatible with every other mod that added new ores. And as anyone can attest, "Tin" and "Copper" are to overhaul mods what sex mods are to every sandbox game out there; proliferous and unending.
Modpacks are a big fucking no-no. 9 times out of 10 the people making them don't put them together that well. All sorts of redundant/overlapping content.
For about a year I've been working on a "mod review" list that shows you what the best shit available for 1.7.10 master race was. One day I might be motivated to finish the list and make a snazzy little infographic for it.

Of course it does, because every update adds more entities and more calculations to be performed, and there's never any optimization, just piling more and more on top of the shitty engine. 1.13 DESTROYED things by filling the oceans and rivers with fish and moving kelp/grass. A multiplayer sever I'm on saw most people leave because their internet wasn't good enough. A bit of lag for them in 1.12 turned to "unplayable" in 1.13. The fact that you need a boss computer and gigabit speeds to play a game like Minecraft is just the world we live in. Developers expect you to keep pace with technology, and if you don't you're left behind. Just try opening a modern webpage on a computer 15 years old; it'll overheat the CPU and cap the RAM and laugh at your attempts to run the flash embeds because integrated graphics won't cut it anymore. Despite that this computer had no trouble surfing the web back then.
Fun fact: running optifine in any configuration (even lowering settings to their absolute minimum inside it) gives me worse performance than vanilla. I can't figure out why, but it is oddly appropriate.

It is forge. The only thing that would slow down vanilla gameplay is having too many entities loaded or too many AIs for those entities.
That was the first big hit to performance that vanilla minecraft saw, but most everything used identical AI with just one little variation (like sheep eating grass), but pathfinding will take a huge toll.
Forge is the ultimate of necessary evils, so many things were added to forge to make modding easier (for a select few) that it practically doubles the size of JVM and the requirements needed. You want to make a comparison of this, go and run the tekkit classic modpack for 1.2.5, then just install forge on 1.12 and see how long it takes to load and how bad your framerate is.
Optifine might improve things if installed alone, but with forge you're nailing one foot to the floor and shooting yourself in the other.

Mobs in Minecraft were done at first by Notch as a way to cover any defense you add.
Zombies are the standard mob, just run to you and hit you.
Got obstacles or ranged weapons to counter them? A Skeleton will attack you from range as well.
Got walls for cover? Spiders will climb them and get you.
Installed crenelations and tougher walls? Creepers will blown your walls and make a hole for the other mobs.
Of course, since mobs are completely uncoordinated and they spawn almost at random, with the light level being a way to counter this and create 100% safe areas, combined with mobs not even engaging you if you're outside their field of view, then this falls flat.
Just build a wall around your base, spread torches or glowstone and your base is 100% safe.
The point of coordinated invasions is to break the mold, making mobs that actually test your defenses and break your shit. You get a tough chalenge to beat and cool rewards as well.
The original invasion mod gave you a resource that could be converted into any kind of ore you wanted, so there was a nice way to progress in the game. Just make a fort and defend yourself, earning resources based on how well you do, as well as Experience too.
If the same happens with this update, it'd be fucking great. No more spelunking for hours, boringly mining blocks for the sake of finding some diamond, or keeping track of your Z level to find gold. Just set up a fort, defend yourself and you'll be rewarded with the resouces you couldn't be arsed to find yourself, but in a much more fun way.
