you're reading too much into this. Only kids go out to be "pokemon trainers". Adults go to work during the day when the game generally takes place. There are plenty of buildings around you can't go in, someone has to be working there. Not everyone that runs a gym is a kid, and even the ones that are kids are older than you and generally have sort of inherited their position there.
I think a bigger question is where gyms and pokecenters earn money. You don't pay to heal your pokemons or store them, and you don't pay to challenge a gym. Do pokemarts pull in enough dosh to pay for the pokecenters? Why are there no competing pokecenters? Is it all taxpayer funded?

Gyms probably get funded by the losers. Pokemon battles are a hobbie/sport, but everyone bets money on it, mc included.
Pokecenters heal and store pokemon using electricity, an unlimited resource you can get from wildlife. There's no scarcity so there's no need to pay for it.

You can't really make your own electricity, or enough of it to actually power anything significant. If they tried charging for it, all that would happen in a Pokemon world would be basements full of electric Pokemen, probably mostly Pikachu, kept as slave labor and being forced to produce electricity for all their life. You always find ingame people who just lost against the gym leader and are training for a rematch. Gym leaders also act like majors/sheriff of their respective towns so it must be a sought-after position. You don't need that much money to run a cockfighting ring anyway.

Reason 1, for a proper adventure arc to take place character must be disconnected from everything that has been grounding him, because otherwise it just turns into a prolonged set of errands that are required of the character to complete to return to his original lifestyle.
Reason 2, if as a child your hobby is gaming, then your parents have likely failed at parenting, thus the death of characters mother is a games way to connect directly to the person playing, through how he is disconnected from his parents.
Reason 3, if a family or other important to the main character people are introduced, then killing them off is the "go to" method for creating a revenge plot.

Shame Klarth's summons don't really scale as well as Arche's spells, at least up through the PS1 remake. Not sure if the tweaking to the game for the version bundled with NDX rectified that off the top of my head, but the poor bastard felt outclassed by her in my experiences, which was a shame because he was pretty cool. Overall though, he's lucky that having two casters on the field is usually more useful than replacing one with a physical character.
