42aaf1  No.15760471

I just finished Shadow of Chernobyl. It's not a bad game, but it's so close to being good that it's painful. I had gripes, but was having enough fun to put up with them until around X16, started having fun again once I left, and stopped giving any sort of a fuck about anything two minutes into the Sarcophagus. The image I attached covers most of what I hated, but there's a bit more.

<The anomaly detector turns mysteries into annoyances

I loved the film. Imagine how lesser it would have been with such a device. Instead of listening for audio cues, looking for visual distortions, and throwing bolts to lay the best path, it's all reduced to keeping the tone from becoming too frequent. It's also deafening during firefights in certain areas, which can be life-or-death.

<Kruglov is everything wrong with escort missions, and you have to escort him twice back-to-back

"Let me run ahead of this well-armed Stalker with my shitty pistol, picking up better weapons as we go but not using them, and completely disregarding what makes for good cover. Also I'm a bullet magnet so the zombified people ignore him and only aim at me. I am a physicist, somehow."

<Indoor levels suck dick

X16 is the worst offender by far, being filled with the glorified bullet sponges known as snorks and zombies. The Sarcophagus was only slightly less terrible in that regard, but far worse in every other way.

<The wasted opportunity that is the Sarcophagus

The mad dash before the blowout was a better finale than this shit. The NPP is Ground Zero for the Zone, its factions, and everything you've done up until now. I was wondering what could be in there. I've faced a fair few strange creatures getting there. What untold monstrosities could be in that place?

Dudes with machine guns. Secret lab? More dudes with machine guns.

Fucking yawn. I could write a thesis on the fuckup that is this level alone, but I'll just put it this way instead: imagine you had never faced a Controller up until this point. I think there's only two, and one of them is entirely missable. Imagine going through the dark corridors of the Sarcophagus, trying to keep your radiation levels acceptable, and you run into a fucking Controller. You panic, run backwards to regroup, and after taking it out, you start peeking around every corner a little more deliberately. But honestly, the Sarcophagus being totally empty would have better than the linear corridor shootan we ended up with. Once I saw the Secret Lab was more of the same I totally checked out and made a wish for immortality instead.

SoC was still engaging enough for me to finish it, but I don't see myself ever doing a second playthrough without a mod that gives it a major overhaul. I will play the subsequent games and Call of Chernobyl in the hope that they provide a more polished experience.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. General, I guess.

I hate all the STALKER games. The games felt short, the exploration and progression felt very linear, the grey bleakness of the world stopped being immersive after a few hours in and started becoming so dull, the gunplay was absolutely retarded, lack of fast travel makes quests and exploration feel unnecessarily slow, stalkers should've had bikes, and the performance was so bad. Not just indoor levels and sarcophagus, all the levels smelled of wasted opportunity. Escorting Kruglov was actually one of the least painful painful moments in the game imo, though.

It's in no way as good as the movie. The movie simply can't be adapted into a video game, the mystery would be all destroyed. Just look at how shallow the plot and hamfisted the mystery of the stalker games are.

>The anomaly detector turns mysteries into annoyances

This definitely comes across in SoC, but anomaly placement is one way to solve this. By Call of Pripyat the devs had experimented with making big cluster of anomalies, where the detector would help as a rough gauge but it becomes necessary to use bolts far more often since the safe zones are ultra narrow. The beeping in that game acts as a method of knowing if you're in a field, rather than a real tool of avoidance. Being able to turn it off would be lovely though

>Kruglov is everything wrong with escort missions, and you have to escort him twice back-to-back

AI has always been a weak point in these games, Kruglov is just the most visceral example.

>Indoor levels suck dick

I found the indoor levels some of the best with their mixture of tense atmosphere, interesting contents, and mild puzzle solving. Zombies and Snorks may come across as bullet sponges initially, but they're immensely weak to headshots. Try using a shotgun to pop snork skulls and an accurate rifle to brain the zombies.

>The wasted opportunity that is the Sarcophagus

Pripyat and the NPP battle in SoC both suffer from what appears to be a lot of cutbacks, as if they ran out of development time to really flesh the place out. It would've been nice if the NPP had more extreme anomalies and bizarre creatures, but given that this is where the Monolith faction bases itself it makes sense that it'd be more of a militarized bastion. Personally I quite liked the ominous calls echoing through the place while nearly getting ventilated by overarmed crazies. If you want an excuse one could theorize that since C-Consciousness is actively trying to contain and reverse the Zone's effects, the NPP remains relatively "normal" yet defended since all effort is being put into stabilizing that location.

Overall I've found to be the least replayable title, since there are barely variations on quests and gear, so you're left carving more or less the same path through the Zone as before. It has the best story experience by far, but everything after just had much better gameplay Clear Sky was an utter mess, but what they were trying to do with it was a step in the right direction

Let us know what you think of Call of Pripyat, it's easily the best vanilla stalkan experience.

c452ba  No.15760524

i enjoy playing Call of Pripyat most because its nearly entirely focused on exploring the maps, doing a lot of strange smaller quests, all of them have payoffs, every place has something to do

I just played both games for the first time about two weeks ago, and I liked Call of Pripyat a lot, though I think I enjoyed the aesthetic of Shadow over Chernobyl a bit more (I think it might have been the color palette combined with the slightly less detailed modeling). The gunplay in CoP was definitely better, as I was getting pissed off in SoC at how inaccurate the guns are (I should be able to hit someone I'm aiming down the sights at from 25m away, even with starting weapons) and how weird the damage was (it felt like human enemies that were above bandits could take a full magazine or two unless you manages to land a few headshots on them).

Is there a mod that adds stuff from SoC like the rankings? Also one that allows you to join factions with improved faction warfare? I feel like those two things that were missing in CoP kind of hurt the immersion for me when I switched over. Not that you could necessarily join factions in SoC, but the way they handled Freedom vs Duty by having them chill in the rest area seemed really stupid and they seemed to have weaker writing overall.

CoP will have to wait. I'm about to OD on slavpocalypse. I just went through the Metro series before this, and I need a serious palate cleanser, preferably one with no guns whatsoever. Maybe a nice, cozy dungeon crawler.

Got any recommendations?

CoP had a type of fast travel between maps that didnt feel casual.

Had a non-linear gear progression.

Better artifact scavenging, too bad the artifacts werent as interesting like in SoC by mostly focusing in radiation meta.

Finally added burier and chimera, plus the night-day meta of mutant spawn.

Even improved over CS weapon upgrade system, by making it more streamlined with the amount of content in mind, but lacked the chance of enemies with modified gun.

And at the end it offered free-play after finishing the game, something dreamed since SoC.

It was a decent sequel, content and modding wise, before the IP could die off Stalker 2 never ever

Another terrible /v/core series. If Bethesda or any other AAA company made it everyone would shit on it like it deserves but because it was made by slavs instead it has hipster value and everyone sucks its dick.

>CoP had a type of fast travel between maps that didnt feel casual.

What Stalker games need isn't fast travel, but a fucking bike. I tried driving a car in OGSE but I guess a bike would work better.

>non-linear gear progression

Not really. You can't acquire all the upgrade tools without doing the main quest.

>free-play

Which is completely useless because there's nothing to do besides walking around doing jackshit, not even shooting enemies, they spawn like sasquatchs because apparently stalker can't handle more than a few dozens of NPCs in a same area without stuttering. It should've had more repeatable assassination or enemy camp cleaning missions.

Yes really, it varies wildy on what equipment you like and what upgrades you choose, upgrades you can find without doing linear missions.

How is this linear progression in any way? Explain that to me

>Upgrades are equipment related though

And they're both non linear and far from being the focus of the progression system.

>>15760681

> Also you can't get the decent detectors without unlocking the rest of the map.

Except you don't need them and the last one is made by finding a certain detector 3 times on all of the maps.

That's non linear

No, just outing an autistic mess of a /v/ user that gets mad because people don't masturbate to his favorite japanese console games like Gravity Rush 2 or Sakuna of Rice and Ruin and would rather discuss other games.
