I had the same thought process and let me tell you, this particular pad is not worth it. The one with the rotational D-pad may be better, but the one in the OP is poorly made for the degree of precision desirable in fighting games. The buttons are fine and it's comfortable to hold, even for my gorilla hands, but with the way the controller is molded, your thumb will invariably approach the D-pad from the southwest position, which makes motions towards the east half of it much harder than they otherwise would be.
Honestly, a thumb on a D-pad is pretty awful, but if you're going to ride with it then I'd say get the rotational D-pad or a modded DS4 with mechanical microswitches for better precision.
Sticks are better unless you have a lot of muscle memory tied to a pad. Hitboxes and keyboards are the objective best way to play if you can afford/wire one.
