Who uses fightpads for fighting games? I haven't touched a fighting game since the PS2 era and prior to that I was all over fightpads. Wanting to get back into fighters and I don't see many fightpads with 8-direction d-pads. Is the Hori one worth it or should I just take the plunge and get a stick?

I use the Fighting Commander for DBFZ, Fighting Street, Darkstalkers 3, Capcom JoJo, Neo Turf Masters and Third Strike. Almost my entire group uses sticks, but I'm not a fan.

Just use a keyboard and go into Fightcade.

I can easyly play KoF with WASD HJKL.

if you have actually never played in the arcades or never plan too, don't bother. but the stick is extremely comfortable, but the buttons are a step back imo in terms of ergonomics

How difficult are Z motions or quarter circles on that d-pad? It looks like it'd be stiff and hard to do.

I just use the PS4 controller. D Pads and analogs for different fighters

z motions aren't hard, the trick is to not draw a z on the pad, quarter circles aren't hard but it is painful to execute if you find pressing a diagonal on a d-pad painful.

Diagonal on a 4-way doesn't sound too appealing but it's only like what $45? Can't hurt to try.

I had the same thought process and let me tell you, this particular pad is not worth it. The one with the rotational D-pad may be better, but the one in the OP is poorly made for the degree of precision desirable in fighting games. The buttons are fine and it's comfortable to hold, even for my gorilla hands, but with the way the controller is molded, your thumb will invariably approach the D-pad from the southwest position, which makes motions towards the east half of it much harder than they otherwise would be.

Honestly, a thumb on a D-pad is pretty awful, but if you're going to ride with it then I'd say get the rotational D-pad or a modded DS4 with mechanical microswitches for better precision.

Sticks are better unless you have a lot of muscle memory tied to a pad. Hitboxes and keyboards are the objective best way to play if you can afford/wire one.

Hey fighting fagolas what is your preferred method for Z, and Pretzel shit

I tried to get used to doing a 6323 motion, but I've had more success with 6236 and it feels more intuitive. Can't say I've ever actually attempted a pretzel motion.

It needs a little working. It's stiff for a while, but gets better after use. I've never failed an input due to the D-pad. I'm a casual player, though.

I find the ds4 pad to be way too mushy.

Tekken players too. It's becoming common enough that arcades are starting to add pad support to their machines.
