Most games aren't fun to play through, but if you're interested in the game or story then you can watch someone else play through it while you do something else, plus you can fast forward or skip the shit parts.

The only time I watch other people play is when I need a good sample of gameplay to get the measure of a title, because christ knows promotional videos are fucking wothless most of the time. Alot of them are just cg commercials that tell you fuckall about the game itself.
Otherwise, I'll ocassionally watch gameplay if there's some bit of information I'm looking to refresh myself on for some banal internet discussion about lore or mechanics or some shit that I don't have time to replay at the moment. Or when I'm listening to a longform discussion to provide the illusion of social interaction and I'm doing anything else, though usually I'll be playing something myself instead of watching their shit.

I only watch one guy and it's for his personality and banter. If he plays something I want to play myself, I don't tune in.
The most entertaining things to watch are either complete shit games that can be mocked and games I enjoyed but already played so that I can see how he reacts and deals with things differently.
In the past I've also watched some people that are very good and/or attempting to teach the viewers tactics and how to play. But that's only relevant for PvP games and I still need to be able to stomach their personality or it's not worth it.

Same here, if the guy playing the game provides a different or method of approach compared to how I played it then it's fine by me. If the guy who is trying to teach me tactics isn't some FaZe wannabe and actually an honest and dedicated player, then that's fine by me.
But for crying out loud, I hate let's play banter ever since I purged all the Game Grumps-esque content from my feed and kept just no-commentary gameplay videos it has been a lot better of a viewing experience. It's like listening to that scripted Ubisoft multiplayer banter that they play whenever they demo a game.

Yeah, I mean not all the time. But I am usually playing something well having something on in the background in general. Ive never watched someone play a game as an alternative to playing the game myself though. I like 5 hour long snes rpg speed runs, I am watching one right now of Dragon Quest V and the nip has 2 viewers. I have been playing through the Castlevania series again.

I browse streams of games I want to play, find a guy that's playing in a public server, and join them. Telling them I joined because of their stream always makes them feel good, especially when they have no viewers.
I do this with the hope that streamers shift focus from "watch me play" to "join me playing" and people watching streams start using them as a social platform to play more games. My dream is to have passive entertainment eradicated from this earth and for everyone to need to get involved in order to enjoy their passtimes. The death of cuckoldry would be a fortunate consequence of the end of passive entertainment.
