What really sucks is that the older Fire Emblem games are legitimately pretty damn good. The first few games are a bit clunky, but I'd highly recommend 4-7 and 9. Thinking about it a bit, one thing the better games are REALLY good at is making you hate certain villains. Pic related #1 has your entire party from the first half of the game killed and the second half takes place after a time skip. If you only play pic related #2's game, what he does isn't as bad, but most westerners played the prequel first and he kills one of the most useful of the main characters early on. Pic related #3 on the other hand is a perfect example of how to have a recurring enemy be terrifying and never lose his menace. As a plot point, he kills the main character's father, but that's nothing new for these games - what makes him stand out is that a few maps later, he spawns during the level and begins advancing you slowly but unstoppable. He's got literal plot armor and is immune to damage, but even if he wasn't, he outclasses you by so much that you couldn't scratch him and it would be a hopeless fight. If you allow him to close the distance, anyone he attacks is going to die. And while it's foreshadowed that he's around, he's pretty infamous for killing characters on first playthroughs on that level. Much later he spawns on another map. He's still invulnerable, but your guys are strong enough to not die instantly. Not long after that, you get the real fight where the main character's plot sword negates his plot armor. The battle timed and the only realistic way to win is to use one of two rather broken skill combinations and for the RNG to activate them (admittedly, the odds are pretty good)
Nu-Fire Emblem though has turned it into an overly casualized waifu simulator with shitty, over designed characters. It was better when the series was about war and your dudes.

Story and character have never been a strong point of the series. FE9 is the only arguable exception to this.
FE6 remains my favorite simply because the gameplay was so great. But I don't automatically hate the newer entries because of the anime art style. Fates Nohr was actually great gameplay wise, even if the story was put together by a mental retard. As long as they keep providing campaigns like that, I could care less if they make awakening style games with non existant map design for newfags.
On that note it was such a waste to remake Gaiden. That remake was utterly fucking gorgeous, for a game that was utterly trash. Amazing music, really nice art work, best graphics and animations of the 3DS games. But the game itself is shit that I couldn't push myself to complete. Every fucking map is literally just an open space, slam your troops together with theirs, and then win. I think I stopped playing at this retarded map where the enemy is situated on a hill with a bunch of ranged mages, and you just have to slog your way to the top. No real strategy, but sadly that's what sells.
I'm holding out for a FE6/7 packaged together remake.
