Does /v/ update their video drivers? Do you update manually? did you ever fuck it up? Do you never update?

goyvidia users only

Normally never update. I only update my drivers when I can't run or get shitty performance on a recent game and it's reported that a newer driver fix the issues.

I'm an adept of "don't fix what ain't broke" in everything tech related.

I update because shit don't work, but then after the update other things start not working and have to rollback.

My package manager does all the updating of video drivers I need and that's extremely rare. Haven't updated in a long while.

f7fadf  No.15653514

I updated once back when I used a gt430. The update fucked up the resolution so I had to roll back.

Goyvida is just like microcux with its updates, one thing works but a bunch of other shit stops working. Really fucks the consumer over when you think about it, but fuckem amirite goys? We got your shekels! I'm thinking about getting amds new cpu with built in gpu sounds like its shitting on goyvida.

Every time I update, something breaks. Mostly it's my custom settings but it's always a pain in the ass every time. I have to check every setting just to make sure it's all the same as before updating. Worse is when the settings I have to cover shit that the update broke are the same but shit is still broken.

I tend not to unless absolutely necessary.

I never update. I have a toaster that can only play old games, so it's no big deal.

Mesa is the foss implementation of OpenGL and Vulkan API. Layman: Mesa translates instruction calls to it, to the Linux kernel, which encompasses the video drivers. This is done to keep hardware acceleration usuage in software nonvender specific. Directx accomplishes the same goal.

If you want the latest video drivers, just update your kernel, or taint it.

I recently tried out Ubuntu because I wanted to try out game compatibility on Steam's Proton, and I'm still having trouble understanding how to know what driver I am on and which driver is best for gaming performance. I don't give a fuck about any of them being proprietary, I just want it to work well. Was using an AMD GPU.

Always update manually and only when shit stops working. I do the same with win updates (so far I never had to update)

443ba9  No.15653703

Manual only, only update when forced to. Tech companies have proven all too willing to push an update when it hasn't been thoroughly tested, and all too often driver updates break things. Only update when you try to play a game and something fucks up because your drivers are outdated.

I basically only update if I have to: If something requires the new driver or if the old one has a known, serious bug that is fixed in the new one. When installing fresh I'll get the latest drivers, but I've rarely had any noticeable improvement from driver updates of any kind. What little improvement you get isn't really worth all that time and effort spent on updating, and risking breakage or antifeatures.

I work with 2D and 3D software that I use more than games so I tend to update every time there's one available in order to not be stuck in my workflow.I wish I knew more about computers so I could have a better control on these updates that I accept blindly each months.

d65a34  No.15656458

i originally did but nvidia purposely fucks up your graphics card in order to get you to buy a new one. i had a perfectly new working gtx 460 1gb and it artifact on me. im now using a gtx 460 768mb that i bought for my dad's computer but he doesn't use graphically intense things so he let me switch it out for a stock graphics card.

nvidia also forcing you to register and sign up in order to update.

7605a4  No.15656481

>>15656442

Impossible now that it's fashionable to assume if users don't update the moment a patch is live they deserve to lose support. I also have your issue with workflow, I've just given up and accepted that the time I spend updating everything and fixing breakage is probably much more, in aggregate, than what it would take to learn a new workflow when mine becomes deprecated.

5dbe95  No.15656817

I've had both AMD and Nvidia cards shit the bed after 'updating' which led to a rollback on the AMD (which didn't work properly so I had to uninstall and reinstall the whole fucking thing) and the 'live update service' Nvidia packages with its cards must be run by sadistic idiots who like making things worse every chance they get so, in short, no.

The exception would be if I lost the original driver disc and even then I'd just go for the first stable release.

Occasionally, unless I've stumbled against a driver that doesn't have any outstanding issues for me at all

Generally I just look up if there's any outstanding issue with the driver I want to update to after a couple weeks, then after I install It I monitor temps / clocks for a bit and if there's something fucky with it I rollback

Surprisingly I haven't had a really bad time with a driver in a while and most issues I've hadgot fixed over time, currently on 411.63

No, stop using GFE.

cf9e3b  No.15657791

By that logic, doesn't Windows also have built in drivers because shit sort of works when you plug in a videocard even if it's in shit resolution and can't make use of 3D at all?

I update once in a blue moon. I got lazy and decided to let nvidia take the reigns with their fucking with the geshit experience. Shortly after my system began blue-screening. Had to roll back and do a clean install of the drivers. Fuck this software.

Manual updates and only when I have issues running shit. Nvidia has a habit of releasing fucked up updates, so I try to stay away from that shit for as long as possible.

Pirated some program called Driver Easy a few years back. Amazingly it works.

Not that I really give a shit, the games I play aren't exactly hardware intensive.
