All I did was find the fastest horse, break it, lasso people and run them over with the train.

The game's alright, a bit slow similarly to Kingdoms Come Deliverance. But that plays it on hand by making your playthrough longer and more engaging. You cannot run around with your horse like in skyrim and can actually fall off and ragdoll of a cliff and have to mercy kill your half dead horse. Its a fantastic pleb filter. And like in monster hunter you have to make bait for hunting on a campfire, and like in witcher you have to track down your prey in immersive open environment. Its fun.

the cinematic element is still shortsighted as fuck, journos eat up walky-talky segments for some reason but those are actually LESS cinematic than a cutscene, and you can just skip cutscenes when you replay a game. With a cutscene you can actually frame character, make sure the lighting is the way you like it, tie in music and sound effects just right, and make something the player might actually want to watch, and if they don't well just skip it and get back to the game. When you do these walky-talky expositions it's not pulling me deeper into the game because the camera just pulled away from where i was looking to look at some one else and in the background an NPC is getting stuck in a tree or it's pitch dark because of the day/night cycle and the animations don't make sense for it.

I'm also inclined to think that the push for in-game exposition is one part journos praising it to high heaven, and the other part is the games writers love the smell of their own ass and want to make sure the player can't skip over their expertly crafted masterpiece, or assume the player is so stupid that they wouldn't be able to stop or slow down moving to listen to a character talk or take a look at something that might be interesting

Batman vision helps casuals to track down fast animals because most of them have short attention span and cannot read their surroundings, spending time actually searching for an animal with their own eyes. It also improves hearing too and allows to hear a bear from miles away.

The game has fast travel too by the way, but its unlocked after doing even more story missions after intro.

Also what i personally hated - free gameplay breaking fast DLC horses and powerful free weapons from preordered special editions of the game. Most of streamers seem to have them and they completely break the game's pace with them like with cheats. Don't even need to make $450 needed for a good horse when better one is fucking free. Also story mode progression locks you from buying powerful weapons too early ingame.

GTAIVs might have been groundbreaking physics wise when Rage wasn't shitting itself but it was still pure fucking garbage from a gameplay and content standpoint.

The main problem I had with the first game is simple that its mechanics are not interesting enough to warrant an entire game build around them. This goes for GTA as well. What I mean by that is that the vast majority of firefights boil down to whack-a-mole contest with the world's most retarded AI enemies. So, in kind, all the missions, side content, and "free roam" content are sure to be shit, given that they're built with said primary mechanics in mind.

It does have a lot of atmosphere than can feel tedious if its all you do for hours. Highlight of the game so far was the drunk bar scene with lenny. The effect and seeing lenny's head on that guy having sex with the whore was priceless. Other than that, it feels like mini side missions loosely strung together with dramatic cutscenes or dialogue with wacky characters. I swear the first RDR was a little more than this. I can't believe they put so much work into the slightest details of the world, but they somehow forgot to unfuck their god awful controls along the way. They also fucked crime up a lot for this being a game about playing as outlaws.

If you fight your way out you rack up a huge bounty. If you try to run without fighting they kill you and probably perma kill your horse too, loot your wallet, and then leave the bounty up. You've gotta make money to pay the bounty so you go to town to trade with the npces you also have to pay the bounty off in town when you have the money, and then the officers hunt you down on sight looting your wallet again if they catch you.

I think the best way to make money is to advance the story. I recently found out that you can use dynamite on safes like the ones found on trains to loot them which is actually kind of cool. Also just keep your crime limited to one zone. There is a limit on how high your bounty can go so after a while it just doesn't matter anymore. I have no idea who thought it was a good idea to make perfect bear pelts sell for 2.50$ while bounties are easily measured in the hundreds. All the different ways to incur an initial bounty are annoying too. I got into a horse accident and didn't have a reviver. My horse was laying down on the ground crying so I decided to put it out of its misery. I leave the scene, and 30 seconds later I see witness: investigating. That message then turns into wanted: animal cruelty. I also accidentally bumped into someone in town, and he pulled his gun to shoot me. I tried to focus on him and defuse the situation. Unfortunately, focus and aim gun are both bound to l2 and are contextual so I ended up pointing my gun at someone I had already hurt in the middle of town.

Most of it is less obnoxious than I thought. Animal hides and bodies rot, but raw meat and trophies don't. My biggest gripe is the max horse whistling range. Even at max bonding it's not that far, and the horse travels in real time so enjoy waiting 30 seconds for your faithful steed. Wouldn't be such an issue if the missions didn't enjoy putting you in the middle of nowhere with no horse at the end.

Aside from that, I also hate how esoteric all the stupid quicktime events/interactive scenes are. The buttons are only halfway consistent and they were extremely hard for me to read in the corner of my screen until I said fuck it and plugged my PS4 into my computer monitor.

The intro was pure fucking shit. A couple of hours of "follow me around and listen to exposition". The 3 gunfights in that time were probably maximum of 10 minutes long put together. No one shut up at any point, someone was always shouting the objectives at you or expositing something. The worst part was that it was all necessary to get to the open world aspect of this "open world" game.
