Valdis Story: Abyssal City was pretty good when I played it years ago. Combat is a bit more 2D Devil-May-Cry-ish with its aircombos and such but it's Metroid-like enough.

https://store.steampowered.com/app/252030/Valdis_Story_Abyssal_City/

There's also that new rogue-lite Metroidvania game called Chasm that's basically just a Castlevania game with procedurally generated levels, but it's gotten a pretty middling reception.

I don't know why they aren't just called Metroid-likes. The -vania suffix adds nothing, and is misleading, since it only started with SOTN which blatantly ripped of Super Metroid and did a worse job of it.

958ed5  No.15633527

>>15633435

Keep in mind that SOTN added fast travel, light rpg mechanics and more complex combat system, most of which are found in almost every modern metroidvania.

While I agree that metroid-like would be sufficient to describe the level design and exploration by backtracking with new abilities, "metroidvania" implies, in my view, varied weapon types, melee combat, fantasy elements, some sort of currency to shop/level up. Teleportation is more of a quality of life thing, so I wouldn't mind it in pure metroid-like.

I think making a distinction between metroid-like and metroidvania would be a good thing though. There are quite a few games which fall into the former category, with fewer weapons, collectible powerups instead of XP etc.

SotN is a thing on it's own and it's better than Metroid. Prove me wrong

>RPG elements

>Shit ton of items

>Shit ton of hidden interaction

>Freer exploration

>More enemy variation

>Better music

You're right, thought, the label is misleading since there's nothing as good or similar as SotN Except Bloodstained, and oh boy will I enjoy it.

>>15633527

>most of which are found in almost every modern metroidvania

Bullshit. They are all straight up Metroid-likes and I can name a ton of games advertised as "Metroidvania" that are only metroid, with maybe Melee combat.

>Hollow Knight

>Ori and the Blind Forest

>Shantae

>Guacamelee

>LaMulana

>Ducktales remastered Jesus christ

>AXIOM VERGE which is literally just Metroid

This shit makes me mad. I want to play something like SotN and AoS, so I keep looking between "Metroidvanias", but all of them have just metroid elements, it's frustrating and made me hate the word.

And don't get me wrong, I enjoyed those games, but they are not even close to be like SotN, much less Metroidvania, so I think the few games I played like that are maybe Momodora and I have yet to play Dead Cells.

97503a  No.15633677

>>15633435

>>15633377 (checked)

This really. It's like calling Rougue-likes Roguehacks: It's pretty redundant and doesn't really add that much information since Nethack is already a Rouge-like game. Plus, There are Castlevanias that aren't remotely Metroid-like (basically the NES trilogy, Super Castlevania 4, the N64 Castlevania games, the Gameboy games, Castlevania Chronicles, Castlevania: Lament of Innocence, the Lords of Shadow games and Castlevania Bloodlines), so the whole "vania" part of Metroidvania is pretty fucking moot since more than half of the games aren't even remotely like Metroid. Hell, even as >>15633603 explained, there are plenty of differences between the SOTN-type Castlevania games and Metroid in that the SOTN-type games are ARPGs first and foremost, whereas the Metroid games are varying flavors of pure action-adventure (whether that be a sidescrolling one or an FPS like the Metroid Prime games). They also are WAYY more varied in terms of items compared to Metroid (where you always have to collect essentially the same group of items to progress to the end of the game) and is more exploration focused than Metroid. I'm not really shitting on Metroid or Castlevania at all. I just don't see why people clump them together because of a small subset of Castlevania games having somewhat similar mechanics to Metroid, which already had established it years before and was popularized because of it in the first place.

Builds do not make a game have RPG mechanics anon.

RPG does not mean you change some numbers now and then. RPG used to have a deeper meaning where the player could define a role and then play said role within a world and have it affect the world and the story, and action resolution within the world was dependent on the character skill, not player skill.

What you're describing is not role-playing, it's choosing one weapon over another. It's no more an RPG than choosing which upgrades to buy in Gradius.

a mechanic can be merely a single component part, a modular unit that left to its own device serves a fiction towards a system that when united as a whole is something else entirely. Like how Voltron is built of five lions. To say for the sake of illustration that one lion is a mechanism that is apart of Voltron is true even if all the other lions are not present. Therefore a mechanic that is utilized in RPG's may not be an RPG in and of itself. It is still true to say it is a "RPG mechanic". Simple categorical imperative. QED.

I'm pretty sure the goal with Valdis was to be a mix of DMC and Metroidvania. Any weapon you unlock on a character will remain unlocked for future play throughs with that character. That is the only way to max out weapons, iirc, since you don't get enough of the rarest material to do that and get a weapon. It doesn't exactly work out because the point of DMC's style of unlocking things was to force you to learn and master the basics with a relatively short game and then get new techniques and move up in difficulty as you get better at it. It doesn't work nearly as well because the game can take some time if you don't know where everything is and are just exploring, and when you add in RPG mechanics, especially the bonuses granted by beating bosses with an S-rank, and it becomes a lot less fun to replay.

You get stuck back at square one, instead of having all the tools and a harder difficulty to match your mastery of the tools you have.

2bda1a  No.15665864

>>15650026

it doesn't, unless you count the fact that the ending is a complete anticlimax in terms of story and the final boss doesn't seem to be all that important in the grand scheme of things. Also the game has two endings but you probably won't even know about one of them because you have to find some douchebag a bunch of times before you fight certain bosses and there's a 99% chance you won't. But that's the "bad" ending anyway, and both endings are basically the same so what the hell ever, the gameplay is what you're there for and it's good gameplay. Unless you go with a mage, because magic, much like in DS, is completely overpowered and completely trivializes every challenge the game has for you.

100a95  No.15668388

>Momodora: Reverie Under the Moonlight

GOTY contender from 2016. Lots of Bloodborne influence in the art style, but there are many types of areas to explore and the story is thankfully minimalist. Combat is weighty and ranged weapons are OP, but the plethora of enemies keeps things interesting throughout the game. Make sure you play on normal mode because the higher difficulties just increase enemy damage and reduce healing items' effectiveness.

>Momodora 3

It's all of $3 or something on Playism and you can beat it in an afternoon. More level-based and arcadey, but still fun due to being able to replay it for a couple of hidden bosses and alternate endings.

>Momodora 1 and 2

Available for free. They'll take a couple hours, if that, and are fun distractions.

>Pharaoh Rebirth Plus

Great level-based action platformer which encourages you to replay levels once unlocking new abilities. Many levels have fun gimmicks that don't overstay their welcome. Play it on normal first, since hard mode is genuinely very fun and challenging, but will make lesser difficulties seem weaksauce in comparison.

I still never figured out how to get to the hidden old man boss beneath that one level.

>Millia Wars DX

H-game with tonnes of yuri and soft vore. If you disable the animations it's actually a pretty solid level-based action platformer with four characters, a scoring system, and hidden rooms but you wouldn't disable the animations, would you?

There was one game I recall from a previous thread like this, but I forget their titles. Help an anon out? It was some kirby-like game that allowed you to copy and potentially combine abilities. I remember it having screen-clearing attacks.

One other game I have forgotten used drills/cables to dart around the environment and connect things. I recall the trailer having a lot of pillars crashing down, but little else.
