Just a heads up, .hack//GU is on sale at the moment for 20 bucks. I believe the game has also been cracked but I figure it was just worth mentioning as it's a pretty good series.

Anyone up for a .hack thread?

pretty decent, all the characters are likable and some can get pretty deep. The gameplay improves with each entry and by the end can be fairly fast paced, and the story is solid. Lot of side content though some of it can be tedious, and you'll want to do it all to get a special ending.

I'd say about the only thing that hasn't aged terribly well is some of the edge in the first game, but it makes for a decent main character who has a lot of character growth, though a lot of that character growth happens a bit to fast imo. Wish I could find a better video showing off the combat.

Go for it, the story, characters, OST and atmosphere are just as good in the original four games, but the gameplay has aged quite a bit and can be pretty basic but still enjoyable.

If you are worried about missing major plot points though the games are relatively self contained but there are definitely little details here and there. I believe the proper order for everything is.

>.hack//Roots (the series acts as a prequel to GU, though I can't remember what episode to stop on to avoid spoilers)

Fuck no. Last Recode is absolute dogshit and ruins the games completely. G.U. is already one of the easiest JRPGs you could ever play, but apparently Namco thinks that's too scary for modern gamers so they turned it into a walking simulator.

They increased player damage across the board, sped up player animations so much that the voices break (this one was out of laziness, the physics are tied to framerate and they doubled it from 30 to 60 without giving a shit), dramatically increased EXP gain to the point where it's actually impossible to not overlevel everything, reduced enemy HP and damage, and specifically nerfed most of the bosses. The game also looks uglier than it did on PS2 because they replaced the actually good post-processing with a horrible blue filter.

G.U., because the devs are retarded, use level as an exponential modifier for all other stats, so outleveling an enemy just flat out makes you invincible and lets you one-shot them with basic attacks.

If you want to play G.U., emulate the PS2 originals. They emulate flawlessly. The new "Vol. 4" added in the remaster is only 2 hours long and is fanfic-tier dogshit that tries to turn .hack into SAO.

>>15611719

Yes and if you want to. There's a save import bonus with some cool benefits if you play the originals (Infection/Mutation/Outbreak/Quarantine) first. But again, do it on PS2/emulator.

Hit or miss as Sign might be (I honestly liked it, but I suspect it might be easier to marathon than weeks of slow build and false leads), that OST was superb. And while the games also have nice, if different OSTs, I will say that Roots I honestly didn't find the music to be nearly as memorable.

>>15611788

I liked the finale, but it could have certainly been less rushed/abridged feeling. On one hand, I really do hate episodic style releases, and asking people to pay three times for what is essentially one game is bad enough without needing a fourth as well, but I've heard they combined the original fourth into the third, and if anything it would have used some better pacing to correct for it.

>>15611730

Might mention that Link's English patch is almost done with editing. I'm expecting it will release soon. Just checked, it's actually out now.

>It’s finally here! I have completed all that I currently can with the game and I have released what I consider version 1 of .hack//Link.

>There are still untranslated parts of the game, but they are mostly generic statements that have no bearing on the story. All story elements are complete. In the future if I can complete this, I will certainly try, but for now, I am considering it complete.

>I have discovered what I believe to be the cause of the freezing error. From now on, the game should not freeze for you, but if it does, please let me know where it happens and I’ll do my best to correct it.

>I will be stopping work on .hack//Link in order to concentrate on doing .hack//Bullet, the Kite novel, Guilty Dragon and New World. I haven decided that I will NOT be doing a Let’s Play with commentary. The game is long and I have many other things to do. But if someone else would like to do an English-language commentary Let’s Play of the game, I would gladly watch it.

>If you find any spelling or grammar errors, or text that goes offscreen, or if you find any more freezing issues, let me know and I’ll find the error and fix it, but I will not be proactively seeking out these issues. I have spent several years on this project and I would like a break from it. Haha. I love .hack, but I can only read the same lines over so many times.

>So, with that, please enjoy .hack//Link!

I didn’t mind the movie. It was basically just a cliff notes refresher, but it had some good scenes between Haseo and Atoli. I also really like how the movie made AIDA looks like something completely foreign to the world and more alien and unnatural than a weird glitch or monster.

Honestly, R:2 seemed to attract a lot of people with issues into the playerbase, the most noticeable at first glance being the furries. But then you start to figure more shit out about the other party members, and then there's some of the shit on the boards and apkallu, and it makes you wonder if the MMO's edgier vibe just attracted weird sorts compared to R:1. And Endrance himself ranges as both pitiable and humorous, going from a nutjob waifufag, to pining like a rock bottom cuck ("I just want to stay down here and think about her"), to a husbandofag just because he finds himself "needed" by someone else even if it's another guy. Poor boy did not take R:1's destruction well at all, as if losing his furfag waifu once wasn't hard enough on him.

I still find that one Apkallu thread about the drawing of that explosive, shelled, humanoid monster (I forget what exactly they were named) hilarious. Was like a short prototype of the whole "I want to explode inside Megumin" shitposting Konosuba would start years later.

>>15615538

endrance to me was designed as a way to (lightly) mock the otaku and their various obsessive-compulsive behaviors. to make it more hilarious his in-game character was designed as an absolute bishonen.

R:2 came out at about the same time the internet became much more accessible to absolutely every single retard with a computer or phone and things like myspace, livejournal etc started exploding in popularity (2006), which can explain your theory about it attracting weird sorts since they now had various e-hugboxes to gather in, and just like modern SJWs they basically invaded every single community.

>apkallu thread

those were called carries. the game's BBS thing predicted early imageboard culture pretty accurately (or rather, it showed a glimpse of what 2ch etc was like back in those times), if minus modern shitposting.

Yeah, R:2 was surprisingly on point at times. Like Kuhn going "But it's [CURRENT YEAR]!" as evidence for why something shouldn't be happening because he can't even. He just can't. Even better because the games were made in 2006/7 but set in 2017 too, so it's not even something that was added/edited for the rerelease, and was effectively current for a reaction image last year.

>>15615629

R1 would have likely required more effort, both on the visuals and gameplay end at minimum. G.U. got by (perhaps not as well as a straight HD port compilation would have sufficed) with a remaster; IMOQ would probably need to be actually remade on a number of fronts. Not sure if they had plans to look back at it as well had Last Recode done well. Haven't played Last Recode myself but I've heard anons say it makes shit way too easy; if there's one boon it's made the PS2 G.U. volumes more available and drop in price due to "trading up", if you're not apt to just emulate/load them.

It may be for the best. Some later attempts to revive it were pretty bad and would have taken the series in a generic moe direction.

bb67cf  No.15620688

I played the first one on PS2, but I was barely able to make it an hour into the game due to it playing like a single player MMO in all the worst ways. Biased thread I know, but is it worth trying it again on PC? I'm more of an M&K type anyways, so does it control better, and does the gameplay get better as the game/series goes on?

b3472b  No.15622890

>>15620688

Well, the games are single player simulations of MMOs going to shit. IMOQ does have the issue of not being all that fun on the combat end due to how you have to go into the menu for everything (contrast Skill Trigger) and spells and skills being dependent on equipment, and not actually offering that much to do ingame (and from a meta standpoint, I found it a bit hard to believe that the VRMMO notion would be enough to keep it popular on its own). I did get used to it after a while, but G.U. does have the more fun combat system, and tries to have a bit more to do within R:2 itself by way of quests (each game has an incarnation of a set of them, and they do get repetitive; imagine if an MMO had quests that reset every patch/season) and PVP, as opposed to just buying/trading shit and running generated fields/dungeons. Ability to sell shit to other "players" via guild store also helps cut down on grind, at least for money.

I think I've heard Fragment did something similar to Skill Trigger first within R:1's era, but I haven't played that version myself. To my knowledge though that one was an actual MMO for the PS2, and I'm admittedly not sure quite how it handles the cast/plot in comparison.

>I found it a bit hard to believe that the VRMMO notion would be enough to keep it popular on its own.

From what I recall from the background lore; it was because The World was the only online game available after everyone's computer & the internet itself was nuked by a super virus made by a 10 year old in 2007. They had to make an "Internet 2" with all new protocols as well as a new OS to support it.

Oh right, I kind of forgot about that factor. But even then it felt like R:1 ought to have had more to actually do for the players in it. Hell, even PVP and PKing got culled sometime between the end of Sign's events and the start of Infection. Though, looking at Sign and how it was pretty heavy on character interaction rather than showing much game-action, perhaps at the time it doubling as an interactive virtual chat room was just as big a boon for people, even those that weren't all that big on actual video game mechanics.

And credit where it's due, Sign at least got the player-interaction and communication aspect of MMOs right.

f3c46b  No.15623264

Does the gameplay get a bit more complex at some point? I've been playing for a few hours and I don't know if it is just because they made the remaster easier, but every fight has just been button mashing with a rengeki once in a while. Just seems very simplistic so far.

a9fa2d  No.15623310

>>15623238

>But even then it felt like R:1 ought to have had more to actually do for the players in it.

There's a conceit in IMOQ that The World has a great deal more to do in it than you have access to; your interests in the game itself are shortly superceded by the coma crisis and you just don't have time for the majority of quests, events, and activities that the game might offer otherwise

b3472b  No.15623405

>>15623310

Yeah, that's true as well. But the AIDA issue and Lost Ones were also something of a big deal in G.U., and the R:2 games still allowed for the player to have more to do, even if there should be more pressing matters for Haseo and crew (hell, often he gets roped into doing quests to kill time between actually important things). Also, weren't there only like six coma victims in R:1? I could be remembering wrong, but I think the Lost Ones in R:2 numbered more than that due to differences in spread (character killed by Phase/Guardian versus being PKed by an infected player). And even just the infection was bad on its own.

I'm just saying more to do with IMOQ would have been nice, even if Kite would have had better priorities.
