I love Nioh, but William was a little bland. On the other hand, his goal of saving the mermaid waifu was a great motivator. I don't mind minimal the minimal customization so I'm curious if a player made protagonist will improve anything.

The fixed protagonist was never a problem, lack of enemy variety was.

A player made protagonist can only hurt the story, because they will be either some very bare bones shit or simply a mute. You can't make a well written protagonist when it can be anything from a nip swordsman to a female nog. And unfortunately that's probably what they're aiming for, to get journalists to praise it because you can be a nog womyn instead of the locked white male in the first.

I think I'm going to prefer making my own character in the sequel, because it always felt weird as fuck trying to put on a different character skin to a character I know is supposed to be William, and who remains William in cutscenes.

There's a reason I can so easily replay Souls games, and that's because I really can do a lot of different stuff with my characters and they all stay as I made them through the entire game.

Is the game like Dark Souls where the online features make up a huge part of the game experience or can you pirate it without missing too much?

There's no real reason to do multiplayer if you don't care about it. It's easier to co-op the game with someone than souls is if that's what you're into too.

Reminder that the video description for the official upload of the Nioh 2 trailer calls it "Sengoku Era dying game". It will either be a prequel or concurant side-story.
