It's just fucking sad how the only remotely promising upcoming first-person shooters (Ion Maiden, Amid Evil, DUSK) are all fucking Doom clones. Overload was released this year, which was a spiritual successor to Descent (which in turn was a zero gravity Doom clone), but also happened to be the best FPS released in the past fucking decade (since SS3 if you try to think harder about it) not just because everything else sucked in the past decade but also because it's that fucking good.

It's so unspeakably depressing how the only way modern indie developers can think of making a good FPS after finally realizing roguelites are shit, is to clone Doom again.

There is something really off about the game. I can't quite put my finger on it, but the low ceiling, the shader effects, the smooth animations and the look of the sprites is just wrong. Old games like Doom or Heretic tried to be as "real" working with the limitations of their hardware.

I think it's part of the programming. In the old days the engine did not let you do more, so you did as much as you could with what you had. Modern engines can do so much, but people decide to use only a subset of the features in some areas, resulting in the inconsistent feeling. It would be interesting to start with an engine that's limited from the start and then try to get as much out of it as possible.

I have had recently the idea for an engine that works like a retro video game console: a set number of layers, fixed-size sprites, limited color palette and so on. The programmer could set the exact limitations when initializing the engine, but once they were set you wouldn't be able to change them. So if you decide to go with NES limitations you couldn't just all of the sudden throw in an object that has a higher resolution or shader effects or any other out of place crap.

AMID EVIL isn't a doomclone at all. It's more of a quake clone except heretic-themed. The levels are really good and having played all three (Ion, Amid, Dusk) I can easily say it's the best one, the purest and with the most love put into it. It's all about the level design you tard. Amid Evil is actually good because it is 3D instead and has good levels. This game doesn't seem promising because it looks like they had a checklist that said "Levels based on Doom" which is a fucking retarded idea because DOOM DOES NOT HAVE HEIGHT and therefore you cannot put one room on top of another. You don't make good games by following a checklist of things that were in old games.

I've played a few retroclones but Amid Evil is the only one that has earned my love so far. It's loosely inspired by Quake but the level design is very different while still being good.

Deadcore is a cool game, but it's not what I had in mind. It is specifically tailored towards FPS platforming. Quake is the perfect balance between an arcade shooter, great map design, and a level of mechanical depth that can be completely ignored if you so wish, but rewards players that do put in the time to learn it.

I get what you're saying, I prefer Quake over Doom myself, but perhaps I should have been more specific.

Basically, in the early 90's you had all these Apogee-style platformers (among which id's own Commander Keen, Turrican, and Jazz Jackrabbit), which were more about exploring huge levels and finding all the secrets in them, instead of Japanese console platformers where levels were more tightly designed linear gauntlets made to test every single ability available to you, like CV/NG/Rockman/etc. It's rather obvious what influence the former had over Doom.

When I look at the FPS genre, the only design philosophy that really succeeded (in terms of quality anyways) is that Apogee-esque exploration-focused secret-filled resource management-oriented colored key-gated school of FPS design, or Doom clones as most call them for obvious reasons. It's so successful that it has de facto become that Golden Standard, largely because no alternative ever sprung up to challenge the idea of what can make a GOOD FPS, at least not without delving into subgenres.

When you try coming up with good first-person shooters, you often begin to fall back to the old-school. Some good exceptions have frequently popped up, like Serious Sam, F.E.A.R., Devil Daggers, Bulletstorm, 6DoF shooters, even nuDoom had the potential, it's just that nobody tried to take and refine them or put their own spin on them. Instead we still have people putting their spin on Quake/Doom as part of this retro throwback wave because it takes confidence to try something new. But when you think of what makes a good platformer, you don't only think of Mario. There's other schools of platformer design too (which aren't total shit).

What I'm really missing from the FPS genre is the Japanese take on it. Which makes sense since FPS games used to be mostly a PC thing while nips kept to consoles and arcades, so they never really bothered with this genre. Yet Vanquish, although a TPS, showed us a glimpse of what could be. Who knows what we'd have now if someone made the FPS-equivalent of DMC in the past.

Shooters doesn't have to go the nip route in particular to be fresh again, but something that deviates from the genre's obsession with the aforementioned pillars of the Golden Standard would go on to shake things up a lot.

I couldn't agree more as an old school id grognard. I love Quake and Doom but the genre hasn't done anything truly interesting since Tribes, Half Life and Unreal. And people liked Half Life for the wrong reasons (setpieces instead of the good AI and such). These games create small cult followings compared to the gaming market of today, because the type of consumer who played FPSes in 1999 is the minority now. So nobody makes games unless it's an indie project and all the retard college kids want to be like Todd Howard or whatever; they want glory, not truly a good game, or they're so naive that they think working for the biggest will allow them to make the best games and get burnt out. Its better than any of the "RPG" doom wads that are out there (not saying much), so if you really want to shoot demons and then assign stat points, this game does that better than the rest but it'll """""cost""""" you. It's pretty fun, all of the guns are fun to use, and overall the game looks better than your typical "retro" dreck.

On the other hand, levels are all super cramped so far (1 act in) and the architecture is boring as fuck (Just like Wolfenstein, though, so I guess they really nailed that part). That shit is tentative, though, because I've seen screenshots of nicer looking areas that apparently show up later on? The music is not great, nor is the main character. Secrets are all about wall humping, zero logic in their placement and hints are either blatantly obvious (this wall section is notably darker than the rest) or nonexistent. There were a couple threatening ambushes on the first level, but its been piss-baby easy ever since. Finally, you don't get the shotgun early enough.

6/10, fucking FPS of the year I guess.
