You sucked at the game if you played like that. TWEWY combat was a lot more engaging than standard action jrpgs once you collected a decent variety of pins. It didn't require strategy if you only played on normal mode like a child, but trying to figure out useful pin combinations for certain encounters and bosses on ultimate was good times. And the ability to freely downscale your level at any time for increased challenge and drop rates is something that many games would benefit from.

The first game didn't end on a cliffhanger. It ended with a very mild sequel hook, but there was nothing left of the main story to explore, unlike actual cliffhanger endings like MML2 or gaylo 2.
