Pretty good, back tracking is a tad annoying but I like that it’s actually dark and hard to see at night. The gameplay is somewhere between an action game, a hack and slash, and Shadow of the Colossus.

It's a decent enough game. There are some gripes I have with it though. If you actually do side quests it's very easy to way over level at least for the base game, AI characters never shut the fuck up, it's an action game where you can only equip four of your moves, enemy placement is always the exact same so after going through an area you'll know exactly what to expect, hybrid classes are kinda broken, the relationship system is pretty stupid, the escort quests are fucking awful.

The character building is shallow, almost as bad as Skyrim which is where the comparisons come in.

It's the combat and enemy design that make DD amazing.

You can knock out evil eyes, pick them up and trick them into using their eye beams on your enemies.

You can set certain zombies on fire, which make them explode.

You can unbalance a cyclops by hitting it in the right limbs, causing them to fall off cliffs.

You can get an exclusive item if you let a certain monster buff themselves by draining your pawns before killing them.

Remember that quest where there's a cutscene where you trick a hydra into eating an explosive barrel? You can actually do that in combat if you have good timing.

Thw strength of DD is that every monster has a something unique about them.

I thought it was just okay. You can pick up and throw enemies and fucking climb them, and you can do a few sick-ass DmC-esque moves, but it always felt kind of floaty and spammy to me compared to actual DmC or something like Dark Souls or Monster Hunter.

I played a mage, which made the game easy, I basically just spammed spells until everyone died. Maybe I should've played a warrior because they can more easily throw enemies and climb on them, which is part of what separates this game from others so you might as well. But then again, I heard the Warrior life is tough as hell.

No wait, I almost forgot. The ENTIRE skill-based part of the combat is pretty much rendered unimportant since you can just open the menu & eat 100 pieces of grass to fully heal yourself. That's probably what I disliked most about the combat, actually.

My first character was a warrior and I don't see how I can play anything else. I started a strider after, but didn't get far. It's pretty fun. You can create a character and have a party of dumbass NPCs follow you around and give you support. You get to fight a variety of giant beasts like chimera, cyclops, hydra, wights, etc. You can use interesting magic spells or play as a ranger/archer or soldier/warrior type. The story is kinda non existent, but you'll stay for the combat and maybe some of the characters will charm their way into your heart.

The Dragonforged thin isn't very clear. He says he was forged by the dragon, and for some reason only the arisen can see him, so there is some kind of fuckery going on. There has been definitely multiple Dragons, and the tutorial arisen (Savan) has been for a very, very long time at it (remember the opening stating that generations past after the tutorial, implying that no a single person from Savan's time is alive, nor anyone remember him.) The dragon we face is not the same he fought (despite sharing the same voice actor). The wandering pawns are in fact pawns who lost their Arisen, thus their only purpose and fell to madness, usually influenced by forces more powerful than them (Daimon in BBI for example). Who the Duke sacrificed isn't said, but it is clear she was the woman he loved, he regrets very much what he did and she probably looked like Elionore, as in a fit of madness the Duke tries to kill Elionore while commenting how much she looks like "her". Also, is correct that the Dragon share some kind of collective knowledge. I think it was in BBI, but it is stated that the personality of the arisen turned into dragon resides in the beast, but the will of the cycle takes over them, and their are unable to do anything but follow the great plan. Basically, Grigori is an entity of its own, with its own memory and personality, which take over the defeated Arisen to come into existence.

Above 100 stat gains are far lower for every vocation. Getting 50 caster levels between 1-100 is going to give you a metric fuck-ton of magic attack and next to no physical attack, but 100-200 the difference becomes more marginal.

What needs to be understood is that the damage formula is a simple subtraction: your attack + damage bonus from your skill - enemy defense. So if you level a say a fighter with 1 magic attack per level, you'll have 100 base magic attack at 100 (this is wrong and should be used as an example to illustrate the mechanics). So if you swap to a Sorcerer and try to fight a monster with 300 magic defense, you won't do any damage. But if you level from 1-100 as a Sorcerer that gets 1 physical attack and 5 magical attack per level, then you'll do 200 dmg to that same monster. It's a bit more complicated than that, but it should be enough to get the point across.

That's fine, I did that and it turned out just fine for me. Just don't do more than twenty levels in physical/magical if you want to later go magical/physical. Also, eschew pre-enchanted weapons since they have the damage split between both physical and elemental damage, and with the way defenses work you're just getting way less bang for your buck.

I started with sword-and-board and it was okay but I got sick of the repetitive combat and not doing enough damage for my taste so I moved to warrior and that was painfully awful because of how slow it was and then I moved to Mystic Knight only to find out that it really isn't that good at either magic or fighting and that my healslut pawn likes climbing more than healing and buffing.

Are the stabby/shooty classes fun? I really wanted to play a glass cannon 2H weapon character from the outset but everything being so slow really ruined it for me; I was expecting something like DaS but instead I felt like a siege engine with legs.

Fighter is pretty boring since none of their attacks are great. Dragon's Maw functions well but is boring to use. Warriors mostly suffer from the same issue, until you get Arc of Deliverance (seen here >>15570510). Mystic Knights are actually good at both fighting and magic, but they rely heavily on buffs and prep time. Assassins I never really liked. Striders are best regarded as being rogues that use their bow for support; they're the "climb on shit and stab it to death super fast" vocation. They also get good physical and magical growth, so they can use physical/magical mixed weapons and can be built into pretty much everything. Rangers are archers with daggers, and they're quite good at shooting shit. Magick Archers are have gimmicky but powerful bow attacks and some support spells, but they're mostly magic oriented so build them as such. Mages are pure support, just level them up for whatever passives you actually want and then dump them. Sorcerers are the ones that have the crazy spells, but they suffer a bit against the more mobile enemies.

The biggest things to keep in mind when you start out is to have a good Mage or Sorcerer Pawn to hand out weapon buffs to your team. The appropriate weapon buff will make your damage skyrocket. Killing undead without holy or fire weapon enchants is 20 times slower than with those enchants. Ice, fire and holy are the ones you want. Another thing to keep in mind is Pawn inclination: I won't write a wall of text about it, but you ABSOLUTELY NEVER WANT TO HIRE A GUARDIAN PAWN. EVER.

Scather/Challenger is usually best. Scather/Utilitarian or Utilitarian/Scather are good if and ONLY IF your pawn has great bestiary knowledge. But if you make a fighter pawn any degree of Utilitarian, you need to train it to not grapple enemies. Training pawns generally goes like this: change your vocation to match your pawn's. Go into the wild and let your pawn fight stuff. While doing this, only do actions you want your pawn to take (if you want your pawn to Shield Summons a lot, do that frequently). If your pawn does something you don't want him to do (like grappling), use a "Come" command and run away and then try again. If your pawn sees something is effective, it'll try to do it more often. If it sees something isn't effective, it'll try to do it less. Someone should post the images on pawn training and whatnot.

Isn't goading that ogre into a suicide plunge the intended way to kill it? By the time player reaches Gran Soren and starts the Lure of the Abyss, he is unlikely to be much above level 20, and the gear will still be mostly shit (trading and early BBI dives don't count), so fighting the ogre the normal way take way more time.

Another thing I can't figure out is what I actually want to play. Sorcerer would be my natural go to but (while some of the spells are cool) the lack of number and the fact that you end up just holding the cast button for the same spell multiple times to fight gets boring. Magical archer was boring as hell.

I want to like this game but I just can't get hooked for some reason I don't even know.

No need. You can just start a new game, get your Main Pawn (this is a prerequisite for unlocking BBI), and go do the DA content right away. It will be tough at first (I remember having to toss powder kegs at the Skeleton Brute in Ward of Regret as my only option to kill it) but perfectly doable. The XP gain rate there is fast, and decent gear is plentiful, so being underprepared won't last for long.

The ogre weakness is actually status effects. Sleeping, poison, weakness, it affects it greatly and can be used multiple times. Sleeping in particular is quite effective, as it will take tons of damage while sleeping and the head becomes an easy target to hit.

Weapons scale with character size, so Big Guys have greater weapon reach due to both longer arms and bigger weapons. Noticeable with warriors.

Higher jogging (but not sprinting) speed at the same encumbrance tier.

Height affects weight, and that has its own advantages: bigger ST/K resistances, easier grapple-holding, and so on.

Stacking different types of debilitations against bosses boosts damage greatly with skills that hit multiple times in a short period like skullsplitter and volley. Those same skills also have a higher chance of inflicting debilitations because of the multiple hits. It's a real shame the ranger class can't use volley. But at least it gets gamble draw instead.

Fighters are invulnerable while spamming their strongest attack. Warriors can 1 shot almost anything with Arc of Deliverance. Striders can do the stack exploding arrows trick, nearly instantly kill everything with Skull Splitter. Magick Archers can 1 shot anything in enclosed environment due to bouncing shots. It's only bad if you're minmaxing. Soloing or only using your main pawn against weak enemies is the fastest way to raise discipline. Bosses are better for levelling up but you don't always want to level up if you're minmaxing for stat growths.

there's some pretty trash skills on just about every class and there's some core ones you pretty much have to get.

same with augments. some just aren't worth getting.

in the end though, you'll be maxing multiple classes to get their augments. A good example is Clout from warrior, Vehemence from Fighter, and Eminence from Strider are all pretty much core on a good Warrior. On the flipside just about every single one of Ranger's augments is trash.

One sure thing is that if you've got a STR based class you'll pretty much have 2 slots occupied by Clout and Vehemence because of how damage is calculated. Same thing for MAG characters but I forget the name of the MAG equivalent augments.

Ranger is probably the easiest class to play, long range, iframe roll, can climb enemies and stab them to death. Compared to strider, it only lacks skull splitter which will basically one shot smaller enemies and do tons of damage to bigger ones. Magick archer's skills are too situational I find. Its start growths also suck if you care about that. Sorcerer is really good even by itself and if you want to really have fun, you can hire other sorcerer pawns to make a 4 sorc party. This lets you sync spells with each other which can save a lot of cast time. Nothing quite like 4x meteor rain.

When you started, you got a free pawn named Rook who can cast fire boon on your weapons. If you check out pawns in the rift, you can see what spells they know and hire what you need.

strength = physical damage, magic = magic damage. There's also physical defense, magic defense, health and stamina. Each class has separate growths for all these stats from 1-10 for base classes, 11-100 for every class and then another vastly reduced growth after 100. Damage dealt is simply strength/magic + weapon attack + skill bonus - enemy defense. Enemy defense can change based on where you hit them like cyclops eyes have basically no defense. This can also lead you to doing 0 damage versus strong opponents. Enemies also have elemental defense which can reduce or increase damage by a percent. Some skills use both strength and magic, particularly mystic knights. When you have a weapon with both magic and physical damage, both are added to weapon attacks but are set against each defense separately which can make them lackluster vs enemies that don't have that element as a weakness. This is why naturally enchanted weapons are bad but weapon boons from sorc/mage are amazing.

No if a pawn dies or gets released everything they have goes into storage. Except anything you equip them with, that gets made into a gift. You can kind of exploit this by filling a pawns inventory with all your loot and throwing them off a cliff. Saves a trip back to town and you can hire another at any rift stone. I've been playing the game pretty much non-stop for the last few days and I have to say that hard mode is where it's at. You get a metric fuckton of money while leveling quickly and all you have to do to make it work is git gud.

-Until you hit the post-game you will virtually never need any curatives except for health and stamina; bank pretty much everything except health items, bringabout (for harpies, or just use a Restless Earring), one or two smother saps and food

-Speaking of which, the alchemist in Gran Soren sells Potent Greenwarish and Large Mushrooms for a song; a few dozen of each will be more than enough for hours of adventuring while only taking up a few units of weight in your inventory

-Combine in bulk. Bank the curatives and materials inventories of your entire party, combine from the inventory management option and then withdraw what you need before taking off again

-Duplicate anything important (especially quest items) at the Black Cat and bank the original

-Low-level dives into Bitterblack Isle can be very rewarding and are also ridiculously fun

-You can use Helm Splitter to cheese your way down any drop; activate it as you're running towards a ledge (do NOT jump) and you'll take no damage on landing no matter how far you fall. You can complete your first trip to the Everfall in about 10 seconds flat with this trick if you ferrystone back, but you'll miss the loot.

-Healslut pawns are a waste. Hire a rando from the rift with Anodyne (don't even bother with Halidom) amd maybe a buff you want and make yours a sorceror if you want a caster pawn

-Barbed Nails are underrated

-The game is fucking horrible at giving you information sometimes so don't be afraid to use the wiki if you're wondering about something. Just don't be a shitter and spoil things for yourself.
