Well the main issue is that the series' combat never evolved after 2. Opting for rehashing the same system rather than making it into a full on action game. The whole idea that started the series is "what if we put the lighthearted characters of Disney and mixed them with the more serious Final Fantasy characters". Making the crossovers matter. Don't rework the original stories from their source material by making a game version of it with Kingdom Hearts elements. That was a huge problem with Kingdom Hearts 1 to 2, especially rehashing boss fights. Make characters within those movies have new adventures with the combination of its Kingdom Hearts cast. We be great to see other Disney character go into other worlds instead of being isolated into their own story and have some contribution to it. A semblance of story would also be nice and not having to rely of spin-offs to even get what is happening in the main story.
Doubtful mostly on Disney's side since they've been a safe company for a while that doesn't take that much risk. Crossovers should elevate both properties but in Kingdom Hearts, it feels like Disney characters are the cameo characters to what would be a convoluted run-of-the-mill RPG strung together loosely to keep making money.

I never saw the appeal or necessity to mix Final fucking Fantasy with Disney characters WFRR style. It's like they wanted to recreate the magic of Chocolate and Peanut Butter, but ended up making Chocolate and Rectal Cancer. And then made a sequel and a bunch of spinoffs that actually take themselves so seriously that they end up with a Gordion Knot of a plot thread. I've got a nephew who's still innocent and is hyped as hell for KHIII because he loves Disney. I think the reality of what KH is is going to hit him like a ton of bricks. I don't know if I should shelter him and let him down easy - or let this be a life lesson for him. I would give him copies of KH I & II for PS2, but nobody in that family knows how to use a PC. I built them a temporary system last year out of old parts, but it should still be powerful enough to run PCSX2 at a playable state… but they haven't even bothered to set it up yet. Even if they did, they'd be so shit-scared of something fucking up or "getting viruses" that they'd never let him use it. Thought about getting physical copies and an old used PS2 - but I don't want to throw vintage hardware into a pack of hyenas.
Larxene is the only good that's come from that series anyhow.

As obvious as this might be, I'm inclined to say "take the Disney out".
Here's the thing, you can easily do the "boy travels across diverse worlds fighting an inter-planetary threat while making friends with each world's inhabitants" plot while making each world something original to the IP. That way there is an actual sense of wonder to what each new world is going to bring you. Making the world's all based on Disney IPs completely robs you of that sense of wonder, it's just "oh it's the [insert Disney IP here] world, I know precisely what to expect".
Hell there's even a sort of genius to doing it that way. Since you can then pick up from fan feedback on what worlds were the most popular so those can make a return in the sequels.

If we're keeping the core concept of "Disney meets Square in action RPG format?" Series selection would be the first thing, and the most important thing would be party customization - even before picking up Marvel and Star Wars, Disney has properties like Darkwing Duck and Gargoyles to pull on, and lord knows how many properties Square has to use. Expand the series roster to call on both companies' histories, and let the player actually USE characters from each series instead of just "you play Original the Character with Donald and Goofy as NPCs, and you can swap one of those two out for a world-specific NPC." Originals in and of themselves don't have to be bad (see Super Robot Wars) but KH's are fucking awful, and they should not be nearly the focus they are.

Kingdom hearts is terrible because it is a cooperation between square and disney.
I say terrible because yidney doesn't want to cooperate well and square treats the franchise as a little cash cow for final fantasy. Also factor in that nomura is not all that great with directing new game titles and you have a recipe for tragedy
Think for a moment. In all the installments that were released they reused the same intellectual properties, assets , ideas ,character archetypes AND EVEN RESKINING CHARACTERS because of poor development choices. If I were still in my preteens then none of this would bother me because I had shit taste. But as I grew older I saw it as a beautiful train wreck.
Yet I still supported the series out of it's charm and nostalgia.
The better solution is to make a successor without the shitty fan fiction tier writing and actually make improvements to KH1-2's game play. That's all. If this dumpster fire ever continues after KH3 most likely it will then sora will fuse with mickey and summon an upside down kingdom hearts to restore the d a r k n e s s.
