PSN maybe, but the way things have been going, they've got no reason (on their end, anyhow) to allow disc backwards compatibility. More in their interest, and publishers' as well, to allow for older games to be digitally resold for profit than continue to allow people to play the older games they already own.

Square-Enix did the same for Tri-Ace's PSP games. And at that, they really seem averse to even digitally rereleasing their older stuff to begin with.

Crisis Core is not available online because of a music licencing issue, same goes for Birth by Sleep. They neglected to get the rights for online distribution.

The more likely scenario is that they'll eventually release an HD remaster of it, possibly leading up to the release of FFVIIR since CC leads right into it and even had a new pre-rendered version of the FFVII opening.

To answer your question, most games will "only" be available via emulation, except for the few that will get a digital re-release or remaster.

.hack//Quarantine starts at $140 used on Amazon, it's already a de facto emulation game for anyone that isn't already a fan.

I'm not sure why this would be a revelation for anyone though. Archivalfags have been saying this for years and it was always clear that there is an issue in vidya with preserving titles. It's only gonna get worse as the consoles, cartridges and discs continue to break down but thankfully good emulators are either already out or in active development for pretty much every console out there, although N64 and Xbox seem to have gotten the short end of the stick.

Sony will NEVER do anything that favors the customer over themselves like offer universal backwards compatibility. Reminder they tried to milk PS1 fans by releasing a shitty phone emulator reloaded with games, no disc drive, and no original hardware features and with USB gamepads that lack analog sticks.

PSPs have been cracked. You can install games on them and run them the same way you install PSN releases. I have Crisis core on my PSP now, a direct rip of the UMD.

You don't need to emulate it, it's on native hardware right now.
