I'm going through the FF games but I'm cautious about this one. Is this game any good at all compared to other FF titles? Why is it still incomplete? Should I wait 5 years to buy this?

This was my first mainline ff game. My perspective is skewed accordingly.
It's a slice of life anime where you go on a camping trip with your friends. It's occasionally really cozy, and because I'm a neet loser I liked it for being cozy.
Execution is really flawed. Story is choppy and doesn't make sense unless you consume all the extended media.
Combat is like … really fucking easy.
To be honest, if you like the combat of the older games, and play them for their systems, you probably will not like this game.
It's an extremely casual action game with lots of FF nostalgia bait.
Don't expect to be impressed, but if you take it not as a fantasy epic, but as a casualized slice of life camping simulator you might enjoy it.
There is one exception: a secret dungeon at the end of the game has some fun brain teasing level design, and is about the only really challenging thing in the game.
The DLC kinda fleshes it out. It will never be a tight cohesive package, but there's enough content with the DLC and game updates, that it's dumb fun.
That's all you're getting. Dumb fun.

Why buy it in the first place?
Gameplay wise its actually worse than anything in the FFXIII series. You either mash buttons or wait for your braindead AI partners to kill hordes of meaningless monsters. The "open world" is practically on rails with invisible walls everywhere and you get drowned in "random" encounters just by standing in an area. The story is unfinished garbage and characters with the depth of a puddle. Half the shit in the game now was added AFTER release so it all feels poorly thought out and slapped together. The side quests are all MMO tier brain dead crap with nothing engaging in them complete with turning in the quest only to get assigned a new one from the same quest giver to go back to the same location and do something else.

I think I only enjoyed it because I'm gay. Maybe also because I'm too lazy to play more complicated games. But for real it's kinda nice to have a game with male protagonists who are masc, and the plot has stuff about the duty and responsibility of a king/there's really nice westaboo imagery, from the north American road trip inspired visuals, to all the knights and arthurian tombs and shit.

Nomura can't stop putting "messianic" themes in his games. And i bet he only does that to try to top Chrono Trigger, the greatest offender in this. Noctis tries to be jesus too much at the end of the game, and lightning in 13 became some sort of messiah. If fucking KH3 will end with all those "hearts", "lights" and "darknesses" being actually references to the bible i won't be surprised, with all jewish influence at Disney it will be even worse.
I already regret buying Square Enix games. He's like Hideaki Anno, but takes a general ideas instead of bunch of words.

The main story is utterly shit, both the plot and presentation of it. They could have made a bro roadtrip adventure of a lifetime, instead they still have to put in their brand of evulz empire and light crystal saviour cliches and shit to ruin it.
Driving in the countryside is comfy, so is the camping and finding a small town in the night to rest, fishing should be main game. That water town is gorgeous beyond words and I was really excited when I got the boat but no. It only lasts 1 chapter before plot demands it be destroyed and enter the point of no return. Infiltrating the empire section is FF13 linear corridor shit.
As much as I hate the CY burger as a nation, I like their midwest culture and Americana myth-culture like how this and the Sims 1 made to it to be. COMFY beyond words.

I like to give my money to companies who do or make things I like so that they can keep doing/making things I like in the future. The characters are hot, the setting is a beautiful wooden feel-at-home fantasy. It had potential and I enjoyed it as a guilty pleasure. However, its biggest sin is that the game is pissing easy and there is absolutely zero depth to the combat. The story is often written off but I actually enjoyed it and it was the movie Kingsglaive that sold be on trying out XV. If the game had turn-based combat, or just had a more complex system giving the combat some strategy then I would have considered the game a 10/10. But because the combat is the core gameplay and the combat press button to win then the game is a 5/10. If you want something comfy, lazy to tune-out and "play" while relaxing then you might like it. If you want a real game don't bother. It's definitely not worth the hard drive space or the price tag.

I will admit it's better than XIII-2 though, and I found the story and characters much more engaging than the disjointed nonsense and "DEEP LORE" XIII had. It's ALMOST a step in the right direction but… XIII actually has better combat, if you can believe that.

the biggest issue with XV is that it had so much potental to be actually great but the combat really was its achilles heel. That is why, while not optomistic, can imagine this same game engine being used to make a competent FF7 remake provided they fix the combat. But the combat is the core issue. Same is true of Kindom Hearts 3 considering its the same engine.

Combat's too easy, it's mindless and generally doesn't feel like you're hitting anything, cast, dialog and interactions are great, environments and models look good, bosses are anti-climatic. If you can get it for <$10 then yes.
Crisis Core also had this weak combat problem- Tabata should just be stopped from directing games.
