The phoenix was actually $350 (still a stupid price, especially for a variant of a cheaper ship that actually reduces your cargo room in exchange for a fish-tank, bar and hottub tro ERP in) the rest of that 400 dollars was a bunch of unrelated flare shit that came with that specific game package. And I'd be more worried about the point defense turret they sold the ship having that is currently MIA as cig has claimed they'll "add it in later" And the ship does actually have a bathroom, they're just throwing a fit because it's the standard shitter in the crew area that all versions of the ship has instead getting some extra special fancy toilet model just for this variant.
But there's plenty of examples of them cutting major features from a ship long after they gotten the money and then said "too bad, so sad" afterwards. A 180 dollar space fighter variant was sold as having an extra power plant to power the extra guns it comes with, now it has exactly the same power supply as the 110 dollar version and can't properly power it's damn guns, and CIG claims this is an intended feature and people misunderstood what extra power plant meant.
A $150 alien ship was sold as having an extra seat and four guns. The finished ship lost the extra seat and half the guns. CIG's response was blame an art guy for building it wrong, then raised the price by 20 bucks.
The 250 dollar Vanguard was sold as a mary sue military grade long range heavy fighter/bomber/patrol ship. The ship was then given the same weapons and components as civilian grade ships, the Bomber, and Patrol ship functions cut and separated into two more expensive variants and module kits. And to top it off, the unique model used during the sale was abandoned and the finalized ship was literally built out of pieces the art team cut and pasted from two other ships at the time.
The infamous 155 dollar mining ship they sold was listed has having a trash filter that separated rocks and dirt from valuable ore, in fact this was the *primary feature* they pointed out for why you would need a special mining ship and people couldn't just slap a mining laser and tractor beam to their 30 dollar starter ship because they'd get nothing but bags mostly filled with worthless dirt. Then the Prospector and mining gets put in game. It has NO such filter, and people have to ignore 90% ore veins in the game, looking for only the richest veins just to get full mining bags loads that are still like 30% valuable ore to 70% trash. Some cultists still swear that CIG will add the promised filter in any day now, but most assume it's an intentional change, and they'll probably make you buy a more expensive ship later to get the all important material filter function that makes the tedious mining mini-game worth a fuck.
CIG does this bullshit all the god damn time. It's not just the actual game they can't get right, they can't even make these stupid fucking shiny jpgs, that are literally funding the game, correctly.

I'm no dev, but it doesn't take a genius to understand that putting more and more shit (that was not planned for since the start) on top of what already exists will do you no favours.

Don't have a source but from what I remember they outsourced the development of the Star Marine FPS gamemode to Illfonic, had them work on a prototype(which was shown at Citcon 2015 if I recall correctly) for over a year and then threw it away due to the Illfonic maps/models using different size scaling metrics due to the fact CIG had never told them the exact metrics to use or some shit.
